Free Resources for Ladder Safety Month in March
Falls from ladders are preventable, yet they account for 100 deaths and
thousands of disabling injuries each year. The American Ladder Institute
declares March as National Ladder Safety Month, designed to raise
awareness of ladder safety and to decrease the number of ladder-related
injuries and fatalities. You can get involved and help improve ladder safety
in your workplace.

OSHA Updates NEP on Silica Exposure
OSHA has revised its National Emphasis Program (NEP) to identify and
reduce or eliminate worker exposures to respirable crystalline silica (RCS)
in general industry, maritime and construction. The NEP targets specific
industries expected to have the highest numbers of workers exposed to
silica. OSHA will conduct 90 days of compliance assistance for
stakeholders prior to beginning programmed inspections for the NEP.

2. The CDC has posted guidance for businesses and employers regarding
Coronavirus (COVID-19). It includes recommended strategies for
employers to use now, advice on planning for a possible U.S. outbreak
and resources for more information. Cases now have been identified in a
growing number of international locations, including Europe, Asia, the
Middle East and the U.S.

Top 10 OSHA Fines of 2019 and New Fine Amounts
for 2020
Federal OSHA issued some hefty fines in 2019. The top fine was more
than $1.7 million, and the top 10 fines together totaled more than $9.7
million. Add the next five highest fines and the total jumps to more than
$12 million. The number of fines seem to be on the rise – and fine
amounts for 2020 have increased, as well.

Deadline for OSHA Form 300A Electronic Reporting is March 2
March 2, 2020, is the deadline for electronically reporting your OSHA Form 300A data for calendar year 2019. Data
collection for 2019 and beyond will include the establishments' Employer Identification Numbers (EIN). Remember,
not all establishments need to submit their OSHA 300A data electronically. Get more information here.

Mining Deaths Reached a Record Low in 2019
There were 24 mining fatalities in the U.S. in 2019, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Mine Safety and Health
Administration (MSHA) reports. This is the fewest annual fatalities ever recorded, and only the fifth year in MSHA’s
43-year history that mining fatalities were below 30. Four deaths were recoreded in Kentucky and West Virginia; two
each in Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Texas; and one each in Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Louisiana, Minnesota,
Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Vermont. Get more details.
NIOSH Releases New Video on Black Lung Respiratory Disease Among Coal Miners
Black lung, caused by the inhalation of too much coal dust, is no longer just a disease that strikes older coal miners.
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has released a video that demonstrates how
black lung is occurring in younger miners, raises awareness of the personal costs of the disease and motivates
workers to participate in free and confidential health screenings. Learn more here, or watch the video here.
CDL Clearinghouse Identifies 8,000 Substance Violations in First Weeks of Operation
The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration reports that its Commercial
Driver’s License Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse has detected and identified nearly 8,000 positive substance
abuse tests of commercial drivers since January 6, 2020. The goal of the clearinghouse is to provide FMCSA and
employers with tools to identify drivers who have violated federal drug and alcohol testing program requirements
and are prohibited from operating a commercial motor vehicle. Read more.
