Free Online Safety Tool for Construction
The new Safety Climate Assessment Tool (S-CAT) is a free online tool
that provides construction companies of any size the ability to assess their
organizational and job site safety climate. Users respond to 37 separate
items across 8 safety climate factors and receive a detailed report on how
their safety climate maturity compares to other companies that have used
the S-CAT. Companies then use a safety climate workbook to find safety
management intervention ideas to strengthen low-scoring indicators.

Keeping Retail Workers Safe During Holiday Sales
The OSHA Fact Sheet "Crowd Management Safety Guidelines for
Retailers" offers advice to help employers and store owners avoid injuries
during the holiday shopping season. Crowd management planning should
begin in advance of sale events. Crowd management, pre-event setup
and emergency situation management should be part of event planning.

at ComplianceSigns.com. We monitor state and federal legislation as well
as customer requests to provide compliant, affordable signs for nearly any
situation. Here are some of our latest additions:
Matte-finish Brushed Silver ADA Braille Signs - We've had many
requests for brushed-silver-finish Braille signs, and we finally found an
acrylic that meets ADA requirements for matte finish. The new color is
available for all our restroom, room name, elevator and other Braille signs.
UL 8800 Grow House Warning Signs and Labels to meet new UL 8800
safety standards that protect grow house employees and visitors from
exposure to UV lighting hazards.
Orange Ammonia Refrigeration Pipe Labels that follow IIAR Bulletin
114-2019 guidelines for ammonia refrigeration marking. We still carry
yellow labels to match older systems, as well.
A few more states finalized their 2020 Labor Law Posters, we now have
New York Admin Code 15-135 apartment fire safety signs, and we
have added additional colors for hundreds of ADA Braille and Accessibility
signs.
New from OSHA: Using Leading Indicators to
Improve Safety and Health Outcomes
OSHA has developed a document that explains how to use leading
indicators to provide early warning signs of potential failure, so employers
can identify and correct deficiencies before they mature into accidents and
injuries. Leading indicators can be valuable regardless of whether you
have a safety or health program, what is included in your program, or the
stage of your program.

Wearable Technologies for Improved Safety and
Health on Construction Sites
Wearable devices and related sensors are now available in many forms
including clothing, watches, helmets and eyewear. Advances in
miniaturized sensors and wireless technologies are permitting a new
generation of protective equipment to become reality. A new post at the
NIOSH Science Blog considers current and future use of wearable
technology to improve construction site safety.

September Workplace Safety News & Notes
3. 3
Here's a collection of safety news from around the web:
Free Inspection Checklists form CCOHS
October 30 was National Checklist Day. The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety urges
employees to use checklists for all workplace inspections. A checklist helps clarify responsibilities, control
activities and provide a report of activities. Learn more about what should be included and see some sample
checklists here.
3 Keys to Disaster Preparedness on Construction Sites
Construction sites are at a greater risk than completed properties during disasters. Incomplete mechanical
systems, tools, heavy equipment and construction materials all create an especially dangerous environment
when the unexpected happens. Check this post for strategies to employ on your sites.
NSC: Employers Next Up to Solve Opioid Crisis
The opioid epidemic isn’t just crippling the health and well-being of those who struggle with opioid use disorder
and their families. Workers with substance disorders miss nearly 50% more work days than their peers, which
equates to six weeks annually in lost productivity. In 2016, large employers paid $2.6 billion to treat opioid use
disorder and overdoses, up eight-fold since 2004. Rather than waiting for legislation and administrative agencies
to set the precedent, it’s time for businesses to act. A recent article by the National Safety Council asks business
leaders to address the opioid crisis at the local level. Read the article here.
Sandblasting and Spray Painting Safety
Spray painting and sandblasting serve two entirely opposite functions, but from a safety standpoint they create
many similar hazards for workers. A new article explores the hazards inherent to both operations, as well as
steps that can minimize risks. Check this article recap and additional resources.

Safety Tip:
Make a Driving Survival Kit Before Traveling
at Thanksgiving
Before you drive over the river and through the woods or anywhere else at
Thanksgiving, make time to assemble a driving survival kit that can save
you trouble – or even save your life. Check these recommendations from
the Minnesota Dept. of Public Safety.
