Cranfield University and motorsport
• Cranfield University has a strong track record of working with the motorsport sector
stretching back to the 1970s.
• The majority of F1 teams use the Cranfield Impact Centre (CIC) to meet the FIA
regulations in relation to structural integrity. CIC also conducts FIA approval testing for
other series.
• Cranfield Motorsport Simulation (CMS) provides race simulators to F1, NASCAR and
other teams and companies. It has a race driving simulator facility here and works with
iZone at Silverstone.
• In 2000 in response to motorsport’s need for postgraduate level engineers with
management expertise, Cranfield launched the MSc Motorsport Engineering and
Management. The course was renamed to MSc Advanced Motorsport Engineering.
• To ensure relevance to motorsport an industrial advisory panel was established. Initially
chaired by Sir Jackie Stewart OBE; now chaired by Cranfield Visiting Professor Adrian
Reynard, the committee includes representatives from leading organisations and ensures
strong links to the motorsport sector.

The MSc Advanced Motorsport Engineering
• The triple accredited Masters course comprises one non-assessed and eight assessed modules
related to key areas of motorsport, the group design project and an individual thesis project.
• Group design projects encourage team working and management development in relation to providing
technical solutions to real motorsport issues. Design is a key element.
• Group design projects have included active aerodynamics for the Reynard Inverter and the hydrogen
sports-racing car project in association with Radical Sportscars Limited and recently electric vehicle
racing with support from Williams Advanced Engineering and Virgin Racing Formula-E Team .
• The British Racing Drivers’ Club (BRDC) and Silverstone supports students on the MSc course. We
also have relationships with iZone, Fortec, the MSA and AVL among others. Cranfield University is an
MIA member.
• Thesis projects develop students’ research capabilities and encourage independence of thought.
Thesis project work is sometimes an extension of previous project work or it is entirely new. Students
mange their projects, often working with motorsport and high performance engineering companies.
• The student learning experience is focused on motorsport engineering and the business behind it.
Students have access to facilities, equipment and motorsport practitioners.
• Securing employment is the student’s responsibility; students can approach a network of motorsport
contacts while at Cranfield. Cranfield alumni are to be found working throughout motorsport,
automotive and high performance engineering.
