This is a social story discussing personal space to pre-schoolers. It would be a book that allows the children to understand what personal space is and what is appropriate.

2. Hi! My name is Theo. I’m
confused about something. Do
you think you could help?
Do you know what personal
space is?

3. I’m in school now and there’s
a lot of kids in my class.
I’m new and I want to make
friends!

4. I like to give handshakes and
hugs.
But they don’t want to be
close to me because they
don’t want hugs or
handshakes.
They get scared or walk away from
me.

5. So this is just right. It is a safe
amount of space.
Personal space is the distance
that makes people more
comfortable.

6. But do you know what
happens if I give people
space?
They talk to me, play with
me, and eat with me.

7. I make friends. And I ask them
before giving them a hug or
handshake if they would like one.
This is okay.
And now I know what to do!
I will keep working on respecting
other’s personal space.
