2. Terminal Values Values, which are considered to be our life goals. Many of these values are most likely not be able to accomplish. Example: Wanting World Peace or Wishing for everyone to get along. Terminal Values is more of a wanting or wishing value.
3. Examples of Terminal Values An exciting life- doing things you won’t normally do. Having a little fun once in a while. Family Security- having family members to depend on and having a support system. Freedom- being able to handle certain situations and learning to be independence. Self-Respect- confidence and being secure about yourself.
4. Instrumental Values Values that we use day to day. It is the guide we use to deal with our everyday problems. Example: Being polite to someone, understanding and forgiving. Unlike terminal values, we use instrumental values in our everyday life and it’s a part of who we are.
5. Examples of instrumental values Broad Minded- being able to have an open mind and listen to others opinions and being respectful. Honest- truthful and sincere Responsible- taking responsibility for your own actions and not blaming others. Imaginative- having creativity and being daring once in a while.
6. Having Different Values Everyone has different values. Some many have values that you don’t agree with. Simply because you may have different values than someone does not mean that your values are wrong. Everyone has their own personal value system.
7. Values changing As people grow older their values may change. Part of being older means most are wiser and have gone through more life experience. Some may not see certain things in the same light as they did before. Going through difficult life experiences may change someone’s values.
8. Family During the value discussion, the top value that may chose was Family. Many people seem to choose that one because they have the support of their family and depend on them for help. Having that family security gives people comfort and feel that they are not alone.
9. Beliefs The beliefs and values that each person has creates their value system. The decisions we make are based on our values and value system. We want our decisions to be consistent with our values. When someone does something that is against their values, it can cause them guilt or creating and uncomfortable feeling.
10. Individual What’s great about values is that it all depends on who you are and what you believe in. It’s about being different than others and not having the same answer. Having different values makes you an individual. We use our personal value system everyday.
