2. - Having the lack of money to afford basic necessities
- Lack of basic capacity to participate effectively in society
- Lacks access to clean water or sanitation
- Lacking sufficient money to live at a standard considered comfortable
or normal in a society.
- Not having enough to feed and clothe a family
- Insecurity, powerlessness and exclusion of individuals
- Not having a school or clinic to go to
What is Poverty

3. Extent of Poverty
About 3 million people live on less than USD$2.50 a day.
The poorest 40% of the world's population accounts for 5% of global
income.
The richest 20% accounts for 75% of the world income.
According to UNICEF, 22,000 children die each day due to poverty.

4. Jake Harriman -Founder of Nuru International
➢ Jake Harriman graduated from the US Naval Academy and
served over seven years in the US Marine Corps
➢ Jake’s personal experiences fighting the War on Terror
convinced him that extreme poverty is a contributing factor to
the causes of 21st century terrorism
➢ Jake left his job as a Platoon Commander in the US Marine
Corps to join the fight against extreme poverty by building an
organization that could ultimately rid the world of extreme
poverty in our lifetime

5. Nuru international
❖ Founded by Jake Harriman in 2008
❖ U.S.-based social venture that equips the poor living in remote, rural
areas to end extreme poverty in their communities.
❖ Nuru is a Kiswahili word that means "light."
❖ Nuru International currently works in Kenya and Ethiopia.

❖ Addresses the most prevalent and fundamental challenges of extreme poverty around
four areas of need:
➢ Hunger
➢ Inability to Cope with Financial Shocks
➢ Preventable Disease and Death
➢ Lack of Access to Quality Education for Children

10. We feel that the people who
suffer from poverty are very
pitiful and we wish to be able to
help them to tide over this
problem .

11. We felt that the fact that Jake
Harriman had left his job as a
Platoon Commander in the US
Marine Corps just to help those
who face poverty and are in need
of help very inspiring.

12. Therefore, we feel that it is only
normal for us to go the extra mile
to help those in need, especially
those suffering from poverty.
