2. The Founder of Grameen Bank:
Professor Muhammud Yunus
Muhammad Yunus was born on 28 June, 1940 in the village of Bathua, in
Hathazari, Chittagong, the business centre of what was then Eastern
Bengal . His father was a successful goldsmith who always encouraged his
sons to seek higher education. But his biggest influence was his mother,
Sufia Khatun, who always helped any poor person or relative who knocked
on their door. This inspired him to commit himself to eradication of
poverty.
3. In 1983 he went against the government and experienced banker’s advice
and started the Grameen Bank which translate into village bank. In 2015 ,
Bangladesh house over 2568 branches of this bank.In order to help the
people who live under the poverty line, he willingly gave up his work as a
professor to run this bank.
4. What does the bank do?
It loans small amounts of money to poor villages who
barely make ends meet to improve on their
businesses and leverage the funds to earn more to
lift themselves out of poverty
What they were doing to differentiate themselves
from other banks was that they charged low interest
rates and were interested to fund small businesses
unlike bigger banks who focused on getting big
loans to charge huge amounts of interest in order to
profit
5. Effects of their social venture
As of 2015, Grameen has 2,568 branches, with 21,751 staff serving 8.81
million borrowers in 81,392 villages. It collects an average of $1.5 million in
weekly instalments and has a recovery rate higher than any other banking
system.
It has managed to lift millions of people out of poverty and allowed them
to amass a financial cushion to prevent themselves from falling into
poverty again
6. So how does this apply to Singapore?
Believe it or not , there are poor and homeless people in Singapore , it is
just that we do not see them often. They are often sent to government
temporary homes to keep them out of sight from the public or to put it in
a better way, to shelter them.
The wealth gap in Singapore is one of the largest in the world, with the top
earning tens of millions and the bottom earning a few thousand per
month. It is easy for the poor to be forgotten in today’s society as they do
not directly affect the rest of the population.
we feel that more should be done to help the poor.
