GBC Lessons Learned
1. Focus on the Entrepreneur, then the Enterprise
Many SME/Entrepreneurship courses focus on enterprise related lessons of marketing,
finance, branding etc and try to make an entrepreneur an expert in all this. We have found
that this doesn’t work without bringing focus on the entrepreneur, his personality and his
profile. The entrepreneur brings his personal strengths and weaknesses into the business.
His personality be it dominant or conscientious and his motivations be they profit or
freedom affects how he/she runs his business and what they focus on and ultimately
whether they are profitable.
Assessments are a great way of Focusing on results
Each lesson in the programme has an asssessment tool that the entrepreneur fills to reveal
what gaps they may have in the particular area of business. Seeing those gaps allows the
entrepreneurs mind to wrap itself around what it will take to get that particular area fully
sorted out and the different aspects that they need to focus on; most of which is covered in
the session.
The right profile impacts success
In order to increase success and impact of the programme the right candidate must be
admitted. The programme focuses on growth stage companies with turnovers between
KShs 3M and KShs 25M. An entrepreneur must have been in business for a minimum period
of two years.
Coaching encourages implementation
Accountability that is brought about by the coaching session focuses the lessons on the
company and its unique challenges thus encourages implementation. The long term and
incremental approach weighs in to build virtues in the entrepreneur.
Build Value and the Entrepreneur will pay
Unlike many funded entpreneurship growth companies our programmes are paid for by the
entrepreneur. They pay for it because they see the value that it has for their business. We
have also successfully come up with payment structures that are suited to their business.
We have found that when they pay for it then implementation is easier and so is
attendance.
