Cauterization in Islam
5. DEFINITION :-
Cauterization is burning of a part of a body to
remove or close off a part of it in a process called
“CAUTERY” which destroy some tissues in an
attempt to mitigate bleeding and damage, remove
undesirable growth or minimize the other potential
medical harm when antibiotics are unavailable.
The use of heat to destroy abnormal cells also known
as “DIATHERMY OR ELECTROTHERMY”.
6. History :-
One of the earlist refernces to cauterization found on
the books of “ HIPPOCRATE”.
One of the people recognized in the treatment
method using cauterization is great Aandalusian
physician “ABU-AL-QASIM-AL-ZAHRAVI”.
He developed special tools for use to stop bleeding of
artries.
Ibn-e-sina, Fridaus al-Hikma & Ibn-e-Rushd.
7. Types of Cauterization:-
Two types of cauterization:-
1- External Cauterization
2- Internal Cauterization
PROCEDURE:-
The instrument for cautery is best made of gold.
Applied on superfascial and some time to deep
tissues such as mouth and anus.
8. In such areas instrument should be introduced through
speculum coated with talcum or a paste prepared with
Armenian bole and vinegar and wrapped muslin.
The speculum is cooled by dripping in rose water or
suitable liquid.
The areas should be visualized through speculum and
then cautery introduced without touching sides.
Care should be taken to avoid damaging the
neighbouring tissues specially nerves
tissues,fasciae,ligaments in treatment of haemorrhage.
9. Metal use:-
1.Gold 2. Silver
3.Copper 4. Iron
In cautery a piece of metal was heated on fire &
applied on wound. This wound cause tissue and
blood to heat rapidly to exterme temperature in turn
causing coagulation of blood thus controlling the
bleeding at the cost of extensive tissue damage.
10. Method of Cauterization:-
In modern medicine, cauterization is used with great
frequency, but the methods have changed. Burning
of the tissue is usually accomplished via one of two
routes.
1-Electro Cauterization
2-Chemical Cauterization
11. Electro Cauterization:-
When electrical pulses are used, this is called
electrocauterization, and it’s often used to destroy tissues
and make sure that small arteries or veins don’t bleed
excessively from removal of tissues. Certain surgeries like
mastectomy employ this method.
Another common use of electrocauterization is through
cardiac ablation, which can eliminate damaged tissue
from the heart to restore a more regular heartbeat.
12. Also use for tumor removal
Nasal treatment
Warts removal
CHEMICAL CAUTERIZATION:-
Chemical cauterization is also used, though there is
some concern that skin might absorb that chemicals.
It is also used in dermatology to destroy unhealthy skin
tissues.
13. Small growth like warts or moles may be burned off
with certain chemicals.
Agents that act as chemical:-
Phenol
Silver nitrate
Liquid nitrogen
Cantharidin
14. AIMS:-
To prevent the spread of destructive lesions.
To strengthen organs which have become cold in
temperament.
To remove putrefactive matters which are firmly
adherent to the tissues.
To arrest hemorrhage.
15. Indications:-
Indications
· Recurrences of bleeding
· Necrotic and gangrenous tissue
· Response to pain
· Gangrene
· Disorder of bone
Contraindications:-
Cauterization is carried out freely when there are no such
contra-indications.
16. Precautions:-
Cautery should be applied over a wide area so that the
resulting scab is sufficiently thick and firm and does
not easily drop on.It is dangerous to let the scab drop
early as it would then lead to serious recurrence of
bleeding.
17. Disadvantages:-
Cautery was historically believed to prevent infection but
currently researches shows that cautery actually increase
the risk for infection by causing more tissue damage and
provide more hospitable enviroment for bacterial
growth.
Cauterization in Islam:-
The accumulation of excess substance in the blood
cause illness and best way to cure them is by extracting
septic blood.
18. When the islamic cupping(HIJAMA) doesn’t work the
last resort is fire cupping.
However, this should be used as last resort when body has
stong resistance aganist medicine.
It should only be used in case of exterme necessity
because of intense pain it cause to remove lesser pain.
The Holy Prophet (PUBH) said:-
“I forbid my Ummah from banding by fire.”
