2. What is cyst ?
The term CYST derived from Greek word
means “bladder”.
Soft fluctuant swelling containing fluid in a
sac lined by epithelium or endothelium.

4. Sebaceous cyst
Sebaceous glands – Skin glands, secretes sebum
Sebum – Keeps the skin soft and oily
Sebaceous duct – mainly open at hair follicle and some at
skin
Sebaceous cyst – swelling at skin, arising from sebaceous gland, filled
with SEBUM/yellowish fluid/pultaceous material, lined by squamous
epithelium

When the S. duct blocked, the S.gland starts to distend with their own
secretion and appear as cystic swelling- Sebaceous Cyst.
5. Clinical feature of sebaceous cyst
Swelling = spherical, Typical cystic
Swelling,
• Size variable – mm to 5 cm
• Smooth surface of swelling
• Skin fixed, unable to lift
• Non tender (tender when infected)
Punctum -Bluish spot present –

6. Site of Sebaceous cyst
Site – Anywhere in body except palm & sole.
Common site – Scalp, Scrotum, Back, face,

7. Diagnosis
Mostly diagnose – clinically
On the basis of clinical examination
Charactreistic swelling
Presence of punctum
TRANSILLUMINATION test negative
Fluctuation test positive in big cysts.
Free from underlying skin(easily movable)
Presence of ulceration, horn,
calcification in later cases

8. Complications of Sebaceous Cyst
Infections – more prone to infection
Ulceration – after rupture of infected
cyst
Sebaceous horn – due to slow
discharge of sebum hardens
Calcification – rarely, in scrotal site
Malignancy – Rarely, in form of basal
cell carcinoma

9. Management
Surgical treatment is treatment of choice
Procedure – Total Excision with removal of sac
Excision under Anaesthesia/Local Anaesthesia

In infected cases- Antibiotic
therapy then excision
Dissection method
