- The magazines analyzed use prominent images on the cover that dominate the page to clearly communicate the main topic and attract readers. They focus on one key subject rather than multiple topics.
- Fonts, colors and graphic elements are coordinated between the cover and interior pages to create a cohesive brand identity and experience for the reader.
- Large images and headlines on interior spreads draw the eye, with balanced use of white space and quotes or captions to engage readers without overwhelming them with text.

3. Vogue
- Vogue magazines are a fashion and lifestyle magazine, it focuses on celebrities as they
describe their fashion trends, their life and their career. For the product magazine I’ve
chosen the front cover is Adele. Focusing the magazine on a world famous person attracts
the reader as they want to read about them.
- For the front cover Adele is staring straight at the camera, this establishes a personal
connection between Adele and the reader and it can play a factor in getting the potential
reader to buy the magazine.
- For the colour schemes of the front cover the tag line says ‘ Springs extraordinary change’
and the singer is then dressed in spring colours as well as wearing a dress with flowers on
which automatically gives you a feel of spring. They also use subtle colours so the main focus
of the cover is on the singers face and they’re not distracted by anything else.
- For the photography of the cover the singer is photographed in what seems to be an old
Victorian house as she lounges on an old fashioned green sofa.
- On the double page spread of the magazine they’ve covered half of the page with a black
and white picture of Adele and a quarter of the rest of the page is the heading of the pages
article. Underneath is a quote from the singer in small font text. The black and white scheme
of the page contrasts with the colourful front cover, and the big heading along with the
photo of the singer immediately draws the reader in, with the title explaining what the
writing is about makes the reader want to read it.
- Adele is admired by most the female population which is why vogue has used her face so
much in the article, as it gets the reader to want to read it and as Vogue and Adele have
similar demographics it will cause more sales to go up.
4. Q magazine
Front cover Double Page Spread
Audience Profile
They’ve chosen a picture
that’s bold and eye catching,
also matches with singers
signature look with fashion
The picture covers
her name, just by
looking at the
picture you can tell
who it is so it’s her
image that stands
out rather than her
title
Audience profile is people
who listen to music as this
is a music magazine and
can be aimed at any
genders. However
depending on the artist it
can be aimed at a specific
genre.
They use red as a trending
color theme throughout
the magazine, as it’s the
magazines signature color.
5. Q Magazine
- Q magazine is a magazine brand about music and different artists, the one I
used the front cover featured Lady gaga. As lady gaga is known for her style in
clothing the magazine took advantage of this to sell their product as it features
her with no top on but covering herself with long gloves.
- This can also help appeal to women as it shows a statement that she is not
ashamed of her body therefore she is showing as much of it as allowed.
- The picture was taken in a studio as you can tell by the backdrop behind the
singer, the colour scheme they’ve used they have gone for a black and white
them but put their logo red as it is there signature colour.
- For the writing style on the front cover they’ve wrote it in bold so it stands out
at the side as to what else is covered in the magazine so the reader knows what
to expect from inside it.
- The front cover picture immediately draws you to the magazine as they’ve
made Lady gaga’s name not as stand outish because when you see the picture
you can already tell who it is.
- In the double page spread they’ve covered half the page with the singers face
and the rest is writing, the large ‘L’ which overlays the article stands for the
beginning of the singers name and this is so the audience can acknowledge her
presence within the format.
- They have also coloured the ‘L’ in red which could refer back to the front cover
image which gives off a sexual image so the colour of the ‘L’ could symbolise
that and also love. Red is a trending theme in the article as well as it’s the main
colour of the magazine.
6. Empire
Front cover Double Page Spread
Audience Profile
They’ve place spider-man in
the middle of the magazine
and he takes up most of the
cover to show the reader the
magazine is mainly focused on
him.
The color and font of the
magazine title matches with
the title of the film
The audience for this magazine can
be anyone who watches movies or
is a fan of movies depending on
the genre of the movie it can be
aimed at any gender.
Black background makes the
picture blend in with the
rest of the page and makes
the picture stand out more
7. Empire magazine
- Empire magazine is a movie magazine that annotates and reviews all the recent movies that come
out every month. Because Empire magazine is a well Known brand they’ve covered half the logo up
using the main picture to advertise the magazine rather than the brand and they know people will be
able to recognise the image and style of the magazine from previous issues.
- They’ve chosen to put spider-man as the main image as that is their feature film, they’ve made him
dominate most of the cover so it shows the reader the main subject of the magazine as well.
- On the cover they’ve used vey expressive, and intimidating words that immediately pulls the reader
in, such as ‘Best ever! Essential!’ which advertises the magazine to be to be exactly how they’ve
described it.
- Instead advertising one movie on the cover they advertise the biggest in the box office in 2012,
behind spider-man you can see pictures of other movies but as spider-man was the most popular
topic in that year they’ve used that as they’re advantage to sell the magazine so they put him at the
very front.
- At the bottom and the top of the magazine they’ve also included extra feature reviews so if the
reader wasn’t interested in the main cover of the magazine there’s extra features for them to read as
well.
- They’ve also referred to the main movie in the tagline as the movie is called ‘Amazing spider-man’
and they’ve taken the the ‘amazing’ part so it says ‘amazing 2012 preview’ the font they’ve used is
also similar to the font they used for the actual title of the movie so it’s steel.
- In the double page a quarte of one page is taken up with a still from the amazing spider-man movie,
they’ve used a black background so the picture fades in with the rest of the page, so the page looks
like the picture.
- At the top of the second page they’ve included a movie roll with more stills of the film as well.
- For the writing they’ve made it quite a small font but spaced it out for the reader so it doesn’t look
like so much to read.
- The picture on the double page immediately catches your attention as well because the rest of the
page is quite dark, then the main picture gives it a bit of colour so they’ve gone for a bland colour
theme to make the picture stand out.
- It makes the audience want to buy it because the colours and fonts they use immediately catches
your eyes, as well as the bold word choices they use persuades the reader to buy the magazine
8. Research Analysis
- I’ve found that the different magazines that I’ve researched have very similar
properties, such as the main front picture always dominates the cover, rather than
the title of the magazine company because it’s the person on the front cover that
sells the magazine rather than the brand. They also always focus on one main topic
for the magazine rather than having loads of different topics to go on, they find
one major topic that they know is going to sell and attract the reader and the
other topics, they mention at the side of the magazine so people know that the
main subject is that of the front cover.
- For my magazine I know I'm going to include one picture that dominates the cover
so the reader knows what the magazine is about, the font of writing I use will also
be in relation with the topic I’m doing so it catches the readers eye and it doesn’t
look out of place. For the actual writing on the magazine for my double page I
know to include a picture that covers a majority of the page so people don’t just
see a load of writing, I would also space my paragraphs out and include quotes
that refer to my topic.
