Academic Stress Essay
Stress can be defined as "environmental events or chronic conditions that objectively threaten the physical and/or psychological health and well–being
of individuals of a particular age in a particular society" (Sharp and David, 2016). Today the world is growing and changing at a rapid pace. The change
is not only technological but in the way people think and interact with each other. This rapid change has put a lot of pressure mostly on the generation
Z and generation Alpha. This has caused a rise in the number of stress related issues which has effected academic grades negatively. In order to manage
stress levels; studies have proven that exercise helps students to decrease and overcome stress. Stress for university students starts with transitioning
and adopting to new environments, social situations, academic workload and much more. As students enter into this new environment they often get
overwhelmed and often result in stress and anxiety. (Bamber and Kraenzle Schneider, 2016). Students entering a new environment result in staying
away from family, romantic relationship being disrupted, peer pressure, sleep deprivation and in some cases moving to a different country to finish
their higher studies. (Sharp and David, 2016). These are the most common stressors, students face when transitioning to university life. Furthermore,
stress can impact a person's general health, quality of life, reduce a student's motivation to do their studies and increase psychological

Stress In University Essay
Stress is known for occurring during the overwhelming times throughout students' university experience. There are three major elements that students
face in university that reinforce each other and lead to stress. These three connected experiences can lead to them developing a mental illness if the
stress becomes long–term. Firstly, when the academic pressure and work–load for students rises when they come to university, they will feel stressed.
Secondly, since university is expensive, it may be very stressful for students to pay for tuition and living costs. Lastly, students who are starting
university will face a lack of family support systems, difficulty finding friends, and difficulty leaving home which will lead to them feeling stressed.
Stress based on these three factors may have a significant impact on their mental health and academic success.
Firstly, when the academic pressure and work–load on students rises when they come to university, they will feel stressed as they adjust to the change
of scholarly expectations. Students in university face the challenges of having more assignments and tougher examinations than in high school, which
students may not be prepared for beforehand. The other academic factors that contribute to higher stress levels are familial induced pressure to succeed,
scholarship requirements, and higher education requirements (Bedewy and Gabriel). Other factors that also have the highest rate of academic stress
are, "course loads, lack of

What is Stress? Essay
Stress is something that affects many people each and every day. Life is full of hassles, deadlines, frustrations, and demands. For some people stress
is so common it is a way of life. Stress can be very harmful and or helpful. It could help motivate you to meet a deadline and perform a task under
pressure. Stress can also be very harmful, such as memory problems, moodiness, aches and pains, and eating more or less.
So what is stress? Stress is a normal physical response that happens when you feel threatened or upset. When you feel that you are in danger whether
it is real or imaged. Your body has a response when stress occurs and it is a way of actually protecting you. Many times, stress helps people stay more

Stress can affect the mind, body, and behavior. These affects could cause your relationships with others can be affected with your girlfriend, parents, or

Stress has many different symptoms the most often and most common is having a headache. On your body the effects of stress are muscle tension or
pain, chest pain, and fatigue. The effects of stress on your mood is anxiety, restlessness, and lack of motivation or focus. Finally, the effects of stress
on your behavior is overeating or under eating, drug or alcohol abuse, and social withdraw. Since anyone at any age can be stressed there is no
certain population that is effected the most. I would say that teenagers get stressed easily due to school, spots and or jobs. The thing that stresses
most high school student out is picking and choosing what they are going to do after high school and what college they will be going to if any.
People a little bit older after college could be stressed by trying to find a job or trying to find or support a family. Older people could be stressed if they
are running out of money but besides that older people are probably the least stressful people in are population.
Stress is not only affected in the work place and at home, it is also affected during sports. There is a ton of pressure in many high school sports

Stress is the combination of psychological, physiological, and behavioral reactions that people have in response to events that threaten or challenge
them. Stress can be good or bad depending on the situation which someone is facing. Sometimes, stress can be helpful, providing people with the extra
energy or alertness they need. This type of stress is called eustress. Unfortunately, most stress does not fall under that catagory and can become
harmful when not managed effectively. This is known as distress and is what most people are referring to when they mention stress. Distress can
increase the risk of developing health problems, such as cardiovascular disease and anxiety disorders. Stress can be thought of in terms of stressors and

This can cause twitching, trembling, muscle tension, headaches, sweating, irritability, fatigue, and even dry mouth. I deal with this by just having a
positive additude, by knowing that I can complete the task in front of me and following a few simple rules for myself. By following these a student
that scored high on the stress test can do many things to lower their level of stress. First off, when dealing with stress a student's physical well being
and the attitude of that student need to be improved. To start this, the student must think positive. Positive thinking not only decreases the stress level
in the body, but it also acts as a confidence builder. Making an effort to stop negative thoughts and think more towards positive ones changes the total
mindset of that student. Instead of thinking negative thoughts about a test, the student needs to focus on doing well instead. Secondly, you're
encouraged to start an exercise program. Exercise is a major stress reliever. It frequently is one of the best physical stress–reduction techniques
available. It not only improves health and reduces stress caused by unfitness, but it also relaxes tense muscles and helps to sleep; a much needed
benefit for many students. Exercise has a number of other positive benefits such as: it improves blood flow to the brain, bringing additional sugars and
oxygen, which may be needed when a student is thinking

Effects of Stress Essay
Stress is in all areas of life, and is focused in three areas; time, environment, and liability. It can be used as either a noun or a verb, and the effect on
the body are both positive, and negative. When discussing stress in an emergency services role, it has the potential to interfere with the ability to
function in a prescribed professional role.
Acute stress activates a part of the brain called the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrena, or (HPA) system. Breathing will become rapid, and the spleen will
discharge red and white blood cells, to support the increased oxygen flow throughout the body, thus readying the body for the event. These effects occur
in a critical incident event, and can cause the emotional power sufficient to overwhelm a...show more content...
This "adrenaline rush" allows the person to react quickly, but also interferes with the ability to handle social or intellectual behaviors. Fluids are
diverted from the mouth causing dryness and difficulty in speaking. In addition, stress can cause spasms of the throat muscles, making it difficult to
swallow during this time.
The confrontation effect or phase, steroid hormones reduce activity in parts of the immune system, (including important white blood cells) these
immune–boosting cells are sent where an injury is most likely to occur in the body, such as the skin. At the same time, stress moves blood flow away
from the skin to support the heart and muscle tissues, to reduce blood loss in the event that a wound occurs. The physical effect is a cool, clammy,
sweaty skin. The scalp also tightens so that the hair seems to stand up.
Once the threat has passed, and no harm to the individual has occurred, the stress hormones return to normal. This is known as the relaxation response,
and in turn, the body's systems also return to normal.
While long hours, caseload, and the balancing of family, friends, and faith relationships also raise stress, recognizing the signs, and sources of stress,

Stress Management Essay
Stress
Stress is normal. It happens to everyone, and affects everyone differently. It is a feeling of being overwhelmed for handling things you aren't used to.
Stress is also known as a response or something that changes in the body caused by emotions, social, physical, or economical issues which can cause
tension mentally and physically. It can be caused by external or internal situations. What's known as the "fight or flight" response, is initiated when an
individual becomes stressed. It is the complex response of the neurologic and endocrinologic systems. Stress management includes pharmacological
and nonpharmacological elements, and was found to be an effective treatment method for treating stress.

You also shouldn't judge yourself too harshly. Don't try so hard to be perfect, people are not meant to be that way. By managing your stress, you can
avoid becoming burned out and affecting people around you.
Remember to NEVER take your stress out on the residents. No matter how bad your situation is, personal matters cannot affect your job. Stress can
also be from caregiving. Being a caregiver can be an amazing experience, but also challenging. Women are more at risk for heart diseases and harmful
effects from stress involving health than men are. These effects stress can cause could lead to many different medical conditions including
psychological conditions like anxiety and depression. Families who have had to take care of their elders have been reported to having higher levels
of stress rather than people who don't. As people who will be taking care of these residents' families, we need to keep in mind that it may not be easy
for them. We may be stressed out about something not concerning a resident, and the family may take your actions to heart. If you bring your personal
problems to work, this could lead to neglect and upset the family.
The effects of stress are not only overwhelming for us, as the caregivers, but also the residents. The elders may have poorly controlled diabetes, high
blood pressure, slow healing, uncomfortable bowel movements, and

Psychological Stress Essay
Psychological stress is a result of many factors and should be dealt with very carefully. Stress can be defined as "An excess of demand made upon the
adaptive capabilities of the mind and body".(Joseph 1). Another way of putting it, is that there are some things that put certain demands on us. The
effects of stress should not be limited to unpleasant emotional states. Many studies have concluded that the effects on our physical health from stress
can be extremely detrimental. These adverse physical effects include heart disease and formations of cancer. There are also some societal issues that
psychological stress can hamper.

Pressures that are brought about in our society are imposed by ourselves and by others. If one has too high of expectations for oneself it is
inevitable that they will burn themselves out. These expectations are derived out of our gender roles as men. Men are thought of in our society to be
the provider of money and security to their families. It is one way we measure or "manlyhood". Unrealistic pressures such as this, and pressures from
school, work and social life will lead to high levels of stress.
Conflict happens when two or more incompatible motivations or behavioral impulses compete for expression. There are three classifications of
conflict; approach/approach, avoidance/avoidance, approach/avoidance. Approach/approach conflicts occur when we have two attractive options
from which we have to chose. This can happen when we have two group of friends going out for New Year's Eve, both with exciting plans. It is
tough to decide which group of friends you want to hang out with. Avoidance/avoidance is the opposite of approach/approach. When you have to
decide between two unattractive choices or goals, stress sets in. This has occurred to me this past month or so in deciding what I am going to take for
my accounting elective. All of my options are very unappealing. Decisions may arise where both objects that you are to chose from have both attractive
and unattractive components. This type of conflict can be categorized as approach/avoidance conflict. An example

The Effects Of Stress On Mental Health Essay
Introduction It is known that humans are naturally going to have stress in their lives. Stress is caused by various events such as death of a spouse,
paying bills and changes in common daily functions. Different individuals interpret these events differently. Recent research has shown that each
person is different with how they cope throughout stressful situations (Pastorino & Doyle–Portillo, 2016). The different situations of stress can cause
mental health issues such as depression, extreme exhaustion and anxiety (Pastorino & Doyle–Portillo, 2016). When these disorders are diagnosed, they
often are caused by the chemistry that a person has, socialization factors, adolescent to adult development and the stressors that life brings. It is further
known through various studies there is a significant difference between the genders that are likely to end up with a mental health issue such as
depression. Although, within more recent studies have shown that in college aged students, college women are more likely to become depressed
throughout their college career (Boggiano & Barrett, 1991). Depression is a common disorder that causes a person to act and think negatively about
their lives. Throughout the course of life, depression can be significantly higher at certain points than others. Depression is commonly prominent
throughout college aged students, due to the many stressors that are constant in their lives. College aged students deal with the many pressures such as

Stress And Stress Essay
Stress is physically and psychologically debilitating for humans. When an individual's response to stress, their physical body discharges a substance of
epinephrine and norepinephrine into the erythrocyte. These hormones instantly initiate the brain to flight–or–fight in response to threat or danger,
which can positively or negatively influence a person's behavior. For instance, a recently expelled college sophomore student got dismissed from a job,
become a homeless person and owe an outstanding amount of loan from the U.S. bank in a period of time. The overwhelming, stressful situation such
as this can disturb a person to have a nervous breakdown. According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, approximately 44,193 of

Therefore, adopting a healthier lifestyle can distinguish between a problem–solving thought and a nagging worry that has no benefit.
Secondly, the most beneficial method to overcome a stress disorder is through exercise since being physically active stimulates the brain regions. When
exercising, the brain acts as natural painkiller described as endorphins releases into the brain cell, which rewires the memory circuits and improved
mental sharpness. Additionally, exercising is extremely effective for the body as it reduces the fatigue and enhances the cognitive function. For those
who are unwilling to take part in the exercise, sex is another option to lessen stress because it drained all the stressful thought away. A Psychiatrist
from Harvard University once said, "When two people have sexual intercourse, the releases of oxytocin cut stress related to the brain region",
implying sex is a solution to clear up the complexion. While stress is a food source for sex, the pressure a person feels may leave. Therefore, every
minute count as the mind and body trained to reduce stressful thoughts.
Another treatment doctor found to reduce a mental stress is by harnessing the upside of stress so a relationship can be formed. Rather than denying
stress, recognize and acknowledge that stress is a way to nurture a person. A tend–and–befriend is a behavior by humans attempting to seek protection
from a social group for mutual defense in response to a threat. During

Coping with Stress Essay
Stress is part of our lives. We live with it, deal with it, and above all worry about it. Our way of life, the area in which we live, the economy, and our
jobs can cause a great deal of stress. Not everyone deals with the same level of stress and there are several factors that can impact our lives and cause
us to have higher or lower stress levels. We can have stress caused by Cataclysmic events which according to Feldman (2009) are events that can affect
many people at the same time and are "disasters such as tornado and plane crashes, as well as terrorist attacks". (p418). Other factors are personal
stressors and can be caused by events such as a divorce, death or a loved one or the loss of a job. (Feldman, 2009). The...show more content...
These are stressors we live with and deal with on a daily basis.
Work Stress and Mental Health Some people have higher levels of stress because they might have a very stressful job. Police officers, fire fighters,
soldiers in a war zone, health care providers, long distance truck drivers, and yes, even educators (think of a classroom full of students where you
are responsible for making sure that they are learning the skills they need to succeed) have very stressful jobs. According to Elkin and Rosch
(1990) workplace related stress in a major problem in the U.S. and it creates a major expense for corporations. Koeske, Kirk, and Koeske (1993)
indicate that all jobs have some level of stress but jobs that are in the human services have additional stressors because they "derive from intense
involvement in the lives of others". (p.319). They also refer to the type of stress experienced by individuals working in human services as
"burnout" (Koeske, Kirk, and Koeske, 1993, p.319). Another factor that can influence our stress level is how we handle life's demands. There are
different ways of reacting to the situations we face every day of our lives. We have all heard of expressions such as 'road rage' and 'going postal'.
These are terms that we have come to identified with violent reactions to stressors caused by situations all of us face every day. How many of us have

At one time or another, most people experience stress. The term stress has been used to describe a variety of negative feelings and reactions that
accompany threatening or challenging situations. However, not all stress reactions are negative. A certain amount of stress is actually necessary for
survival. For example, birth is one of the most stressful experiences of life. The high level of hormones released during birth, which are also involved
in the stress response, are believed to prepare the newborn infant for adaptation to the challenges of life outside the womb. These biological responses
to stress make the newborn more alert promoting the bonding process and, by extension, the child's physical survival....show more content...
Hans Selye (1982) points out that few people define the concept of stress in the same way or even bother to attempt a clear–cut definition. According
to Selye, an important aspect of stress is that a wide variety of dissimilar situations are capable of producing the stress response such as fatigue, effort,
pain, fear, and even success. This has led to several definitions of stress, each of which highlights different aspects of stress. One of the most
comprehensive models of stress is the Biopsychosocial Model of Stress (Bernard & Krupat, 1994). According to the Biopsychosocial Model of
Stress, stress involves three components: an external component, an internal component, and the interaction between the external and internal
components.
The external component of the Biopsychosocial Model of stress involves environmental events that precede the recognition of stress and can elicit a
stress response. A previously mentioned, the stress reaction is elicited by a wide variety of psychosocial stimuli that are either physiologically or
emotionally threatening and disrupt the body's homeostasis (Cannon, 1932). We are usually aware of stressors when we feel conflicted, frustrated, or
pressured. Most of the common stressors fall within four broad categories: personal, social/familial, work, and the environment. These stressful events
have been linked to a variety of psychological physical complaints. For example bereavement

Stress is the “wear and tear our bodies experience as we adjust to our continual changing environment; it has physical and emotional
effects on us and can create negative feelings. As a positive influence, stress can help compel us to action; result in a new awareness and an exciting
new perspective. As a negative influence stress can result in feelings of distrust, rejection anger, and depression, which in turn can cause health problems
such as headaches, upset stomach, rashes, insomnia, ulcers, high pressure, heart disease, and stroke. (Koop,1998). The long term effects of stress on

Ideally, people would be able to adjust to the amount of stress that they face so that they receive neither too much nor too little. This, of course, is
not always possible. When one cannot eliminate excessive stress, the best way to manage it is to learn to maintain a balance even during a stressful
event. If people learn to recognize the warning signs of increasing stress before they reach their limit, they can cope intelligently with their stresses
before their resources are all spent. (Sarafino,1999). A large population of people suffering from high stress is college students. In a study by
Whiteman (1998) stress is defined as any situation that evokes negative thoughts and feelings in a person. The same situation is not evocative or
stressful for all people, and all people do not experience the same negative thoughts and feelings when stressed. A critical issue concerning stress among
students is its effect on learning. Yerkes–Doson Law postulates that individuals under low and high stress learn to the least and that those under
moderate stress learn the most. Field study and laboratory tests support the notion that excessive stress is harmful to students’ performance.
Mechanisms that explain why students perform badly under stress include “hypervigilance (excessive alertness to a stressful situation
resulting in panic–for example, overstudying for an exam) and

College students generally do experience stress during there semesters. According to New York University Stress Can affect a student's physical health,
emotional well being, and academic success. Also, "College Students experience stress, related to changes in lifestyle, increased workloads, new
responsibilities, and interpersonal relationships."A Student stress survey was conducted by academia.edu to further support this claim. The results of the
survey were astonishing they found the top five sources of stress for that sample which were change in sleeping habits, vacations/breaks, increased
workload, change in eating habits, and new responsibilities. Stressors that students face throughout college is a new environment, new responsibilities,
which include deadlines, well written work, exams, and time management. Time management can be a crucial stressor in college because if a student
doesn't manage their time well, then it can lead to low grades or academic failure because their work was rushed. This also ties in with sleeping habits,
with poor time management students get poor sleep because they might be studying for an exam the night before. Stress can be critical to a student's
academic success, According to New YorkUniversity "six in ten college students report having felt so stressed they couldn't get their work done on one
or more occasions." This can also affect their well being because it can increase eating habits, causing them to overeat which is unhealthy.

Stress, a Really Serious Problem Essay
In today's society, life is fraught of troubles, deadlines, frustrations and demands. In the lives of many people, stress is so prevalent that it has become
a way of life. According to many doctors and researchers stress refers to the response people have when facing circumstances that force them to act,
change, or adjust in some way to maintain their footing, or to keep things balanced. Today, there are many important contributors to stress (called
stressors) and the effects they cause to the human body and mind. Physical, cognitive and behavioral problems are some of the effects that stressors can

In addition, it often happens that one is working with people who find it irritant or vexatious. In addition, at some cases, these kinds of people begin
with swearing and verbal slurs, but other occasions even go so far to physical abuse among coworkers. This may create a lot of stress and be
unhealthy for the worker.
Curiously, sometimes stress works backwards, as being unemployed leads to the feeling of being useless or not productive for society, putting more
stress on the person. Some unemployed and uneducated people, in their desperation commit crimes such as theft or abduction to make some money.
Some end up entering gangs or clandestine groups to feel needed and important. Furthermore, another originator of stress that many people tend to
suffer is relationship problems. Whether romantic or family relationships problems often arise which provoke a lot of stress for people. For example,
when a person is dating and his/her partner isn't satisfied for any reason with him/her it is very stressful and usually problematic and the relationship
usually ends or worse. As a result, someone in the relationship begins to be unfaithful to the other causing even more serious problems such as revenge
or resentment. On the other hand, not having that "special someone" could lead to stress from being single and alone. In addition, family relationships
are kind of stressors too. In any family relationship, the stress

If the stressful situation is resolved, the stress symptoms vanish. If the stressful situation continues, however, a third stage, exhaustion, sets in,
and the body's adaptive energy runs out. This stage can continue until some vital organs are affected, and then disease or even death can occur.
There are three types of stress, mental, physical, chemical. These different variations of stress all cause similar effects to one's body. Each of
these stresses can come from many sources. Most of these have appeared as a primary threat in our environment. Mental stress occurs from a
shock as severe as the death of a loved one or from a simple thing like a broken alarm clock making one late for work. Physical stress on the body
can be caused by anything from not getting adequate sleep to a severe whiplash injury from a car accident. In addition, there is a chemical stress
which may come from environmental pollution, the side affects of medications or even consumption of overly refined food. Compounding all this is
the tension cycle, in which mental stress triggers physical stress or vice versa, leading to a downward spiral of health and happiness and an
increasingly painful series of symptoms.Mental stress and Physical Stress are linked due to the fact that if one has mental stress it can cause physical
stress. Man's response to psychological stress differs little from sources of potential physical harm. Physical symptoms may include a headache, upset

A. Stressors
Daily hassles are the little hassles or annoyances that occur practically everyday, such as having to make decisions, arguing with friends and family,
trying to meet deadlines at school or work, and stepping on a piece of bubble gum that someone carelessly spitted out. Although a wide variety of
daily hassles can be sources of stress, they often involve conflicts between behaviors people may or may not want to do. If someone is experiencing an
approach–approach conflict, that person has to choose between two attractive alternatives, such as going on vacation or buying a new computer. If
someone is experiencing an avoidance–avoidance conflict, that person has to choose between two unattractive alternatives, such as having a pet "put to
sleep" or spending the money on an expensive surgical procedure for it. If someone is experiencing an approach–avoidance conflict, that person has to
choose whether to engage in an activity that has both attractive and unattractive qualities, such as mowing the lawn, an activity that would result in a
nice lawn but would not be enjoyable to do.
In general, major life events do not appear to be significant sources of stress. Accordingly, major life events generally do not tend to be related to the
health problems that accompany stress. Under some circumstances, however, major life events can be sources of stress. Whether major life events
involve positive or negative feelings, for instance, is relevant.

When people experience stress they often stop using healthy coping strategies like exercising, eating healthy, or catching up with friends to keep their
mood on track. Stress leads to lower moods, irritability, sleep disruption, and loss of concentration. All these contributing factors of stress can lead a
person to ruin their relationships and eventually isolate themselves from those close to them, which will lead them to becoming depressed. Stress
influences our bodies systems, when it comes to our sexual and reproductive systems stress can be wearing on the body and mind which can cause us

Academic Stress Essay

  • 1. Academic Stress Essay Stress can be defined as "environmental events or chronic conditions that objectively threaten the physical and/or psychological health and well–being of individuals of a particular age in a particular society" (Sharp and David, 2016). Today the world is growing and changing at a rapid pace. The change is not only technological but in the way people think and interact with each other. This rapid change has put a lot of pressure mostly on the generation Z and generation Alpha. This has caused a rise in the number of stress related issues which has effected academic grades negatively. In order to manage stress levels; studies have proven that exercise helps students to decrease and overcome stress. Stress for university students starts with transitioning and adopting to new environments, social situations, academic workload and much more. As students enter into this new environment they often get overwhelmed and often result in stress and anxiety. (Bamber and Kraenzle Schneider, 2016). Students entering a new environment result in staying away from family, romantic relationship being disrupted, peer pressure, sleep deprivation and in some cases moving to a different country to finish their higher studies. (Sharp and David, 2016). These are the most common stressors, students face when transitioning to university life. Furthermore, stress can impact a person's general health, quality of life, reduce a student's motivation to do their studies and increase psychological Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Stress In University Essay Stress is known for occurring during the overwhelming times throughout students' university experience. There are three major elements that students face in university that reinforce each other and lead to stress. These three connected experiences can lead to them developing a mental illness if the stress becomes long–term. Firstly, when the academic pressure and work–load for students rises when they come to university, they will feel stressed. Secondly, since university is expensive, it may be very stressful for students to pay for tuition and living costs. Lastly, students who are starting university will face a lack of family support systems, difficulty finding friends, and difficulty leaving home which will lead to them feeling stressed. Stress based on these three factors may have a significant impact on their mental health and academic success. Firstly, when the academic pressure and work–load on students rises when they come to university, they will feel stressed as they adjust to the change of scholarly expectations. Students in university face the challenges of having more assignments and tougher examinations than in high school, which students may not be prepared for beforehand. The other academic factors that contribute to higher stress levels are familial induced pressure to succeed, scholarship requirements, and higher education requirements (Bedewy and Gabriel). Other factors that also have the highest rate of academic stress are, "course loads, lack of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. What is Stress? Essay Stress is something that affects many people each and every day. Life is full of hassles, deadlines, frustrations, and demands. For some people stress is so common it is a way of life. Stress can be very harmful and or helpful. It could help motivate you to meet a deadline and perform a task under pressure. Stress can also be very harmful, such as memory problems, moodiness, aches and pains, and eating more or less. So what is stress? Stress is a normal physical response that happens when you feel threatened or upset. When you feel that you are in danger whether it is real or imaged. Your body has a response when stress occurs and it is a way of actually protecting you. Many times, stress helps people stay more focussed and energetic....show more content... Stress can affect the mind, body, and behavior. These affects could cause your relationships with others can be affected with your girlfriend, parents, or anyone else who is significant in your life. Stress has many different symptoms the most often and most common is having a headache. On your body the effects of stress are muscle tension or pain, chest pain, and fatigue. The effects of stress on your mood is anxiety, restlessness, and lack of motivation or focus. Finally, the effects of stress on your behavior is overeating or under eating, drug or alcohol abuse, and social withdraw. Since anyone at any age can be stressed there is no certain population that is effected the most. I would say that teenagers get stressed easily due to school, spots and or jobs. The thing that stresses most high school student out is picking and choosing what they are going to do after high school and what college they will be going to if any. People a little bit older after college could be stressed by trying to find a job or trying to find or support a family. Older people could be stressed if they are running out of money but besides that older people are probably the least stressful people in are population. Stress is not only affected in the work place and at home, it is also affected during sports. There is a ton of pressure in many high school sports especially individual sports. • 4. Stress Essay Stress is the combination of psychological, physiological, and behavioral reactions that people have in response to events that threaten or challenge them. Stress can be good or bad depending on the situation which someone is facing. Sometimes, stress can be helpful, providing people with the extra energy or alertness they need. This type of stress is called eustress. Unfortunately, most stress does not fall under that catagory and can become harmful when not managed effectively. This is known as distress and is what most people are referring to when they mention stress. Distress can increase the risk of developing health problems, such as cardiovascular disease and anxiety disorders. Stress can be thought of in terms of stressors and ...show more content... This can cause twitching, trembling, muscle tension, headaches, sweating, irritability, fatigue, and even dry mouth. I deal with this by just having a positive additude, by knowing that I can complete the task in front of me and following a few simple rules for myself. By following these a student that scored high on the stress test can do many things to lower their level of stress. First off, when dealing with stress a student's physical well being and the attitude of that student need to be improved. To start this, the student must think positive. Positive thinking not only decreases the stress level in the body, but it also acts as a confidence builder. Making an effort to stop negative thoughts and think more towards positive ones changes the total mindset of that student. Instead of thinking negative thoughts about a test, the student needs to focus on doing well instead. Secondly, you're encouraged to start an exercise program. Exercise is a major stress reliever. It frequently is one of the best physical stress–reduction techniques available. It not only improves health and reduces stress caused by unfitness, but it also relaxes tense muscles and helps to sleep; a much needed benefit for many students. Exercise has a number of other positive benefits such as: it improves blood flow to the brain, bringing additional sugars and oxygen, which may be needed when a student is thinking Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Effects of Stress Essay Stress is in all areas of life, and is focused in three areas; time, environment, and liability. It can be used as either a noun or a verb, and the effect on the body are both positive, and negative. When discussing stress in an emergency services role, it has the potential to interfere with the ability to function in a prescribed professional role. Acute stress activates a part of the brain called the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrena, or (HPA) system. Breathing will become rapid, and the spleen will discharge red and white blood cells, to support the increased oxygen flow throughout the body, thus readying the body for the event. These effects occur in a critical incident event, and can cause the emotional power sufficient to overwhelm a...show more content... This "adrenaline rush" allows the person to react quickly, but also interferes with the ability to handle social or intellectual behaviors. Fluids are diverted from the mouth causing dryness and difficulty in speaking. In addition, stress can cause spasms of the throat muscles, making it difficult to swallow during this time. The confrontation effect or phase, steroid hormones reduce activity in parts of the immune system, (including important white blood cells) these immune–boosting cells are sent where an injury is most likely to occur in the body, such as the skin. At the same time, stress moves blood flow away from the skin to support the heart and muscle tissues, to reduce blood loss in the event that a wound occurs. The physical effect is a cool, clammy, sweaty skin. The scalp also tightens so that the hair seems to stand up. Once the threat has passed, and no harm to the individual has occurred, the stress hormones return to normal. This is known as the relaxation response, and in turn, the body's systems also return to normal. While long hours, caseload, and the balancing of family, friends, and faith relationships also raise stress, recognizing the signs, and sources of stress, allows for the management of stress more effectively. • 6. Stress Management Essay Stress Stress is normal. It happens to everyone, and affects everyone differently. It is a feeling of being overwhelmed for handling things you aren't used to. Stress is also known as a response or something that changes in the body caused by emotions, social, physical, or economical issues which can cause tension mentally and physically. It can be caused by external or internal situations. What's known as the "fight or flight" response, is initiated when an individual becomes stressed. It is the complex response of the neurologic and endocrinologic systems. By managing your stress, you can avoid becoming burned out and affecting people around you. Remember to NEVER take your stress out on the residents. No matter how bad your situation is, personal matters cannot affect your job. Stress can also be from caregiving. Being a caregiver can be an amazing experience, but also challenging. Women are more at risk for heart diseases and harmful effects from stress involving health than men are. These effects stress can cause could lead to many different medical conditions including psychological conditions like anxiety and depression. Families who have had to take care of their elders have been reported to having higher levels of stress rather than people who don't. As people who will be taking care of these residents' families, we need to keep in mind that it may not be easy for them. We may be stressed out about something not concerning a resident, and the family may take your actions to heart. If you bring your personal problems to work, this could lead to neglect and upset the family. The effects of stress are not only overwhelming for us, as the caregivers, but also the residents. • 7. Psychological Stress Essay Psychological stress is a result of many factors and should be dealt with very carefully. Stress can be defined as "An excess of demand made upon the adaptive capabilities of the mind and body".(Joseph 1). Another way of putting it, is that there are some things that put certain demands on us. The effects of stress should not be limited to unpleasant emotional states. Many studies have concluded that the effects on our physical health from stress can be extremely detrimental. These adverse physical effects include heart disease and formations of cancer. If one has too high of expectations for oneself it is inevitable that they will burn themselves out. These expectations are derived out of our gender roles as men. Men are thought of in our society to be the provider of money and security to their families. It is one way we measure or "manlyhood". Unrealistic pressures such as this, and pressures from school, work and social life will lead to high levels of stress. Conflict happens when two or more incompatible motivations or behavioral impulses compete for expression. There are three classifications of conflict; approach/approach, avoidance/avoidance, approach/avoidance. Approach/approach conflicts occur when we have two attractive options from which we have to chose. This can happen when we have two group of friends going out for New Year's Eve, both with exciting plans. It is tough to decide which group of friends you want to hang out with. Avoidance/avoidance is the opposite of approach/approach. When you have to decide between two unattractive choices or goals, stress sets in. This has occurred to me this past month or so in deciding what I am going to take for my accounting elective. All of my options are very unappealing. Decisions may arise where both objects that you are to chose from have both attractive and unattractive components. This type of conflict can be categorized as approach/avoidance conflict. • 8. The Effects Of Stress On Mental Health Essay Introduction It is known that humans are naturally going to have stress in their lives. Stress is caused by various events such as death of a spouse, paying bills and changes in common daily functions. Different individuals interpret these events differently. Recent research has shown that each person is different with how they cope throughout stressful situations (Pastorino & Doyle–Portillo, 2016). The different situations of stress can cause mental health issues such as depression, extreme exhaustion and anxiety (Pastorino & Doyle–Portillo, 2016). When these disorders are diagnosed, they often are caused by the chemistry that a person has, socialization factors, adolescent to adult development and the stressors that life brings. It is further known through various studies there is a significant difference between the genders that are likely to end up with a mental health issue such as depression. Although, within more recent studies have shown that in college aged students, college women are more likely to become depressed throughout their college career (Boggiano & Barrett, 1991). Depression is a common disorder that causes a person to act and think negatively about their lives. Throughout the course of life, depression can be significantly higher at certain points than others. Depression is commonly prominent throughout college aged students, due to the many stressors that are constant in their lives. When an individual's response to stress, their physical body discharges a substance of epinephrine and norepinephrine into the erythrocyte. These hormones instantly initiate the brain to flight–or–fight in response to threat or danger, which can positively or negatively influence a person's behavior. For instance, a recently expelled college sophomore student got dismissed from a job, become a homeless person and owe an outstanding amount of loan from the U.S. bank in a period of time. The overwhelming, stressful situation such as this can disturb a person to have a nervous breakdown. Secondly, the most beneficial method to overcome a stress disorder is through exercise since being physically active stimulates the brain regions. When exercising, the brain acts as natural painkiller described as endorphins releases into the brain cell, which rewires the memory circuits and improved mental sharpness. Additionally, exercising is extremely effective for the body as it reduces the fatigue and enhances the cognitive function. For those who are unwilling to take part in the exercise, sex is another option to lessen stress because it drained all the stressful thought away. A Psychiatrist from Harvard University once said, "When two people have sexual intercourse, the releases of oxytocin cut stress related to the brain region", implying sex is a solution to clear up the complexion. While stress is a food source for sex, the pressure a person feels may leave. Therefore, every minute count as the mind and body trained to reduce stressful thoughts. Another treatment doctor found to reduce a mental stress is by harnessing the upside of stress so a relationship can be formed. Rather than denying stress, recognize and acknowledge that stress is a way to nurture a person. • 10. Coping with Stress Essay Stress is part of our lives. We live with it, deal with it, and above all worry about it. Our way of life, the area in which we live, the economy, and our jobs can cause a great deal of stress. Not everyone deals with the same level of stress and there are several factors that can impact our lives and cause us to have higher or lower stress levels. We can have stress caused by Cataclysmic events which according to Feldman (2009) are events that can affect many people at the same time and are "disasters such as tornado and plane crashes, as well as terrorist attacks". (p418). Other factors are personal stressors and can be caused by events such as a divorce, death or a loved one or the loss of a job. (Feldman, 2009). The...show more content... These are stressors we live with and deal with on a daily basis. Work Stress and Mental Health Some people have higher levels of stress because they might have a very stressful job. Police officers, fire fighters, soldiers in a war zone, health care providers, long distance truck drivers, and yes, even educators (think of a classroom full of students where you are responsible for making sure that they are learning the skills they need to succeed) have very stressful jobs. According to Elkin and Rosch (1990) workplace related stress in a major problem in the U.S. and it creates a major expense for corporations. Koeske, Kirk, and Koeske (1993) indicate that all jobs have some level of stress but jobs that are in the human services have additional stressors because they "derive from intense involvement in the lives of others". (p.319). They also refer to the type of stress experienced by individuals working in human services as "burnout" (Koeske, Kirk, and Koeske, 1993, p.319). Another factor that can influence our stress level is how we handle life's demands. There are different ways of reacting to the situations we face every day of our lives. We have all heard of expressions such as 'road rage' and 'going postal'. These are terms that we have come to identified with violent reactions to stressors caused by situations all of us face every day. • 11. Essay on Stress Stress (spring 1997) At one time or another, most people experience stress. The term stress has been used to describe a variety of negative feelings and reactions that accompany threatening or challenging situations. However, not all stress reactions are negative. A certain amount of stress is actually necessary for survival. For example, birth is one of the most stressful experiences of life. The high level of hormones released during birth, which are also involved in the stress response, are believed to prepare the newborn infant for adaptation to the challenges of life outside the womb. These biological responses to stress make the newborn more alert promoting the bonding process and, by extension, the child's physical survival....show more content... Hans Selye (1982) points out that few people define the concept of stress in the same way or even bother to attempt a clear–cut definition. According to Selye, an important aspect of stress is that a wide variety of dissimilar situations are capable of producing the stress response such as fatigue, effort, pain, fear, and even success. This has led to several definitions of stress, each of which highlights different aspects of stress. One of the most comprehensive models of stress is the Biopsychosocial Model of Stress (Bernard & Krupat, 1994). According to the Biopsychosocial Model of Stress, stress involves three components: an external component, an internal component, and the interaction between the external and internal components. The external component of the Biopsychosocial Model of stress involves environmental events that precede the recognition of stress and can elicit a stress response. A previously mentioned, the stress reaction is elicited by a wide variety of psychosocial stimuli that are either physiologically or emotionally threatening and disrupt the body's homeostasis (Cannon, 1932). We are usually aware of stressors when we feel conflicted, frustrated, or pressured. Most of the common stressors fall within four broad categories: personal, social/familial, work, and the environment. These stressful events have been linked to a variety of psychological physical complaints. For example bereavement Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Stress Essay Stress Stress is the “wear and tearâ€? our bodies experience as we adjust to our continual changing environment; it has physical and emotional effects on us and can create negative feelings. As a positive influence, stress can help compel us to action; result in a new awareness and an exciting new perspective. As a negative influence stress can result in feelings of distrust, rejection anger, and depression, which in turn can cause health problems such as headaches, upset stomach, rashes, insomnia, ulcers, high pressure, heart disease, and stroke. Ideally, people would be able to adjust to the amount of stress that they face so that they receive neither too much nor too little. This, of course, is not always possible. When one cannot eliminate excessive stress, the best way to manage it is to learn to maintain a balance even during a stressful event. If people learn to recognize the warning signs of increasing stress before they reach their limit, they can cope intelligently with their stresses before their resources are all spent. (Sarafino,1999). A large population of people suffering from high stress is college students. In a study by Whiteman (1998) stress is defined as any situation that evokes negative thoughts and feelings in a person. The same situation is not evocative or stressful for all people, and all people do not experience the same negative thoughts and feelings when stressed. A critical issue concerning stress among students is its effect on learning. Yerkes–Doson Law postulates that individuals under low and high stress learn to the least and that those under moderate stress learn the most. Field study and laboratory tests support the notion that excessive stress is harmful to students’ performance. Mechanisms that explain why students perform badly under stress include “hypervigilanceâ€? Curiously, sometimes stress works backwards, as being unemployed leads to the feeling of being useless or not productive for society, putting more stress on the person. Some unemployed and uneducated people, in their desperation commit crimes such as theft or abduction to make some money. Some end up entering gangs or clandestine groups to feel needed and important. Furthermore, another originator of stress that many people tend to suffer is relationship problems. Whether romantic or family relationships problems often arise which provoke a lot of stress for people. For example, when a person is dating and his/her partner isn't satisfied for any reason with him/her it is very stressful and usually problematic and the relationship usually ends or worse. As a result, someone in the relationship begins to be unfaithful to the other causing even more serious problems such as revenge or resentment. These different variations of stress all cause similar effects to one's body. Each of these stresses can come from many sources. Most of these have appeared as a primary threat in our environment. Mental stress occurs from a shock as severe as the death of a loved one or from a simple thing like a broken alarm clock making one late for work. Physical stress on the body can be caused by anything from not getting adequate sleep to a severe whiplash injury from a car accident. In addition, there is a chemical stress which may come from environmental pollution, the side affects of medications or even consumption of overly refined food. Compounding all this is the tension cycle, in which mental stress triggers physical stress or vice versa, leading to a downward spiral of health and happiness and an increasingly painful series of symptoms.Mental stress and Physical Stress are linked due to the fact that if one has mental stress it can cause physical stress. Stressors Daily hassles are the little hassles or annoyances that occur practically everyday, such as having to make decisions, arguing with friends and family, trying to meet deadlines at school or work, and stepping on a piece of bubble gum that someone carelessly spitted out. Although a wide variety of daily hassles can be sources of stress, they often involve conflicts between behaviors people may or may not want to do. If someone is experiencing an approach–approach conflict, that person has to choose between two attractive alternatives, such as going on vacation or buying a new computer. If someone is experiencing an avoidance–avoidance conflict, that person has to choose between two unattractive alternatives, such as having a pet "put to sleep" or spending the money on an expensive surgical procedure for it. If someone is experiencing an approach–avoidance conflict, that person has to choose whether to engage in an activity that has both attractive and unattractive qualities, such as mowing the lawn, an activity that would result in a nice lawn but would not be enjoyable to do. In general, major life events do not appear to be significant sources of stress. Accordingly, major life events generally do not tend to be related to the health problems that accompany stress. Under some circumstances, however, major life events can be sources of stress. Whether major life events involve positive or negative feelings, for instance, is relevant.
