Gender Equality And Its Effects On Society
Like most societies, Canada too makes distinctions between males and females in what is called a gender society; males commonly monopolize
politics, and engage in activities that are considered more noteworthy (Fleras, 2012, p. 155 & 156). Females on the other hand are often expected to
take on maternal and parental roles, however this is often seen as work that is not important within many societies (Fleras, 2012, p. 155 & 156). These
expectations, compounded with the fact that females have constantly been denied rights; both in the past as well as the present, makes it clear that
being a female in any part of the world is extremely difficult. In looking at the gender equality issues that exist, you must ask yourself: why would
someone want to be female in a society that favours men? Well imagine if you were born a male, but felt like a female on the inside. Statistics show
that this occurs in 1 in every 30,000 born males, and 1 in every 100,000 born females (Butcher, Mineka, Hooley, Taylor, & Antony, 2010, p. 474). The
term transgender has been used to represent individuals whose gender identity and/or gender expression do not match the biological gender they were
born with (Stroumsa, 2014, p. 1). Individuals who choose to transition from their biological gender into their gender identity are faced with multiple
barriers especially individuals who have transitioned into females. Being female anywhere is difficult, therefore being a transgender female is especially

Essay On Gender Equality
Everybody is born equal, but are not treated equally. Gender equality has been an ongoing fight in the United States for decades. The majority of
people in the United States would agree that equality is fantastic and that there could be no downside to complete equality. However, in the case of
gender equality (only referring to male and female), it may be better for one gender to dominate a particular role to increase effectiveness. This only
applies to some specialized fields, such as the military, teaching, and child care.
The push for gender equality has always been led by women, as males have historically dominated all positions of power (with a few exceptions),
in both politics and business. Today, many actively push for more women in male dominated roles, and more males in female dominated roles.
One such male role is in the military. There are also those who fight for more balance between men and women in teaching and childcare. In these
cases, scientific studies may suggest that having more women in combat and more men in childcare and teaching may not be as much of a positive
endeavor as some may think. Women are generally not as well equipped for combat as men are. Men are generally not as well equipped for dealing
with children as women are. Biological differences play a serious role in how effective certain jobs can be.
War and conflict between humans has always been around, and always will be. Historically, men have always been the warriors. There have been

The Pros And Cons Of Gender Equity
Gender Equity
From the day that individuals are born stereotypes of males and females are impressed upon them. Most people believe that males are supposed to be
competitive, aggressive and logical thinkers among other masculine traits. Females on the other hand should be sociable, passive and emotional thinkers
. People all over the world accept all of these stereotypes of females and males. These stereotypes also carry over into the way teachers conduct their
classrooms. In education both genders have advantages and disadvantages in different areas.
Most people believe that boys receive more attention then girls. Male students seem to talk more then females during class. They also tend to call out
answers and therefore are given more...show more content...
There was very little difference in the success rate between boys and girls before their first year of algebra (Silvey & Smart, 1982). As students started
to take higher–level math courses boys began to surpass girls. However, a study done by Fennema and Sherman (1978) showed that girls were
achieving as well as boys in two of the four high schools and in three of the four middle schools selected to be examined. Another study conducted by
Armstrong (California Assessment Program, 1978) showed that there was little or no difference in the results of a performance test given to both
genders.
On the other hand girls surpass boys in the areas of reading and writing. The main difference between male and females in this particular area is
that girls just simple read more then boys. Reading is also strongly linked to social class and how much one is able to retain what he or she has
just read (Barrs and Pidgeon, 1994). Boys mature slower then girls, especially in the area of verbal skills. The second difference relates to the
content of the reading. Girls like to read fiction or fantasy stories and males like to read about sports, hobbies and science (Shapiro& Kramer &
Hunerberg, 1981). Teachers need to recognize these prototypes and learn how to get both genders involved in every type of reading materials. The
third difference is in the area of achievement because

Transgender Equality Everyone is assigned a gender at birth and they are expected to play the role of that gender. Everyone is expected to dress
like, play like, and behave like whatever gender is assigned at birth. Humans in society today have it fixed in their brains' that there is a specific way
of living and any other way of living is wrong. So when people start to behave and dress like the gender opposite of the one given at birth, they are
frowned upon and discriminated against. People fear things they do not understand and when that fear takes over, the misunderstood are treated poorly.
Unfortunately, transgender people are very misunderstood and are often discriminated against. Transgender people are constantly being judged and
ridiculed simply because they are different. It is true that accepting people that are different is difficult, but should a group of people be treated
unfairly for being themselves? This is a big problem transgender people deal with daily. Discrimination against transgender people has made their lives
really hard due to high unemployment rates, risk of incarceration, and constant threat of being harassed. Transgender people have so much to offer to
the world, but until people accept them for who they are, the world will never see that. For these reasons, transgender equality should be enforced
everywhere. Transgender people deserve to be treated equally because they are unable to get jobs and

Women 's Rights And Gender Equality Essay
All men and women were created equal. However, this obvious truth is not universally shared. Fortunately, there is a very real fight for gender equality
that we are currently engaged in, and a participant in that fight that holds a fundamental role are non–governmental organizations (NGOs). NGOs exist
as private, voluntary organizations that function without government restriction and bias because they are not for profit and not funded by the
government. These organizations coordinate strategies in order to "perform a variety of services and humanitarian functions, bring citizen concerns to
governments, advocate and monitor policies and encourage political participation through provision of information." These core characteristics of
NGOs meld and cooperate to advocate for women's rights and gender equality. These organizations are actually quite effective in achieving their
missions of promoting women's rights and gender equality. Women's rights NGOs led the General Assembly to adopt the Declaration on the
Elimination of All Forms of Violence Against Women. Women's rights NGOs advocate for the idea that women's rights are included inhuman rights. In
Nicholas D. Kristof 's and Sheryl WuDunn's bestselling novel, Half the Sky, readers are introduced to the many plights that women suffer from in
countries all over the world. Sex trafficking, forced prostitution leading to the abuse of women and young girls, AIDS, and other sexually transmitted
diseases are all very real

Gender Equality Essay
In today's world, when you look around there are so many different types of people. Different races, different backgrounds, and also different
stories. We live in a world of a diverse group of people. Some would think living in such a diverse world we would form a common ground and
maybe unite together to be "equal" but that is far from true. No I'm not talking about the inequality of people based off of race or background, the
grouping of sex is the issue here. From the beginning of time till now, cultural practices have formed these boundaries. There has always been a
separation of males and females and the way they are raised and taught even to what occupations they take on. Over time these became a set of gender
boundaries. I believe...show more content...
Lorber focuses on the biological differences between male and female. She goes into detail about how women are separated or treated differently
from men just because of a biological difference. In comparison, Tannen discusses the behavior and language of males and females in a classroom
setting, discussing how males take on different types of questions and public speaking differently than females. She discusses how males and females
learn to participate in different ways. Between the two authors, there is one point that serves for the basis of my argument and that would be the
inequality that both genders face due to these gender boundaries. For example, in Lorber's essay, she formulates a issues called the Bathroom
Problem. This is a perfect example of how society tries to make both sexes equal when in reality, they are not. In this Bathroom Problem, we give both
males and females the same amount of bathroom facilities. But as Lorber states on page 732, "[A]lthough an equal number of bathrooms seems fair,
equality would mean more women's bathrooms or allowing women to use men's bathrooms for a certain amount of time." (732). If you want both sexes
to be equal, then help both sexes out by giving them the supplies or facilities that they need. This point also ties into Tannen's argument about how both
male and female students participate

Future Of Gender Inequality
Equality is 'the state of being equal' (Collins, pg.182). A topic of recognition in philosophical sociology and mass communication sources is gender
equality. Members of a democratic society consider equality to be a moral which is followed by everyone. Moving towards equality is an objective in
todays world. There is no doubt that inequality is still present in the 21st century and it remains a concern. It generates a continuous pattern of obstacles
that effects the rights of women in the future and creates a new inequality. This essay will talk aboutgender equality in the UK from 4 different aspects;
Culture, Media, Education and then Employment.
Cultural stereotypes increase discrimination against women which can enforce social roles and increase gender inequality. An overall image was
created to show traditional roles on basis of sex. Social stereotypes has been practiced against women and is a fact. In April 2012, a British feminist
Laura Bates established a project to collect cultural abuse from all over the world. The Everyday Sexism Project received 25,000 entries from 15
countries by April 2013 (Laura, The Guardian). Also, Lad culture which is a British subculture raised in the early 90's was reintroduced and that will
have a great impact on the future of gender equality. In 2003 the ability of women to participate politics was decreased due to lad culture
affects.(Gates, Charlie). in April 2014 the UN special rapporteur on violence against women recorded that

The Importance Of Gender Equality
Ever since the beginning of time, women have been fighting endlessly to be treated equally and fairly, whether it's in their personal life, their
business careers, or their social encounters. From the day in which women are born, they are raised and treated differently compared to men. Girls
are expected to be sensitive and sweet, meanwhile boys are usually more tough, and expected to mature a bit faster. Girls are protected more in
comparison to boys and as they grow, the way society treats each gender stands out more. Women are limited to certain professions because they are not
men, and in situations where they can actually work the same jobs, they are paid much less. Throughout time, women all over the world continue to be
sexualized and judged based on their personal opinions. While many nations have slowly begun to embrace women's equal rights, Islam continues to
oppress women by limiting their self–expression, using their religious misconceptions to abuse and control them as a whole, and constantly
maintaining old cultural traditions that prevent freedom and equality for women.
As formerly stated, women's rights across the world are slowly increasing while they remain the same or even worse in some parts of the world. In
America, women can vote, be a part of Congress, choose whatever career they want to study, live wherever they please, marry whoever they love, and
much more. In Europe, gender equality is one of the core values in their initial founding treaties, and

Gender Equality in Today's Workforce
In today's business environment, women get paid on average 12–30% less than men. This affects their ways of living and retirement options. To this
day, women still have less rights when it comes to workforce in many Asian and European countries. Men are the preferredgender because they are
perceived to be smarter. In many countries, women are limited on the amount of education they can receive. Women are not treated fairly in the
workforce because it harder for them to get jobs, they get paid less than men, and men are thought to be smarter than women.
It is very difficult for women to get jobs compared to men. Men are the preferred choice of employment over women in many situations ("Chapter 4").
Even when the job might be more suited for a female, men are still preferred in some places. Currently the only country to not permit women to drive
is Saudi Arabia. This makes it very hard for those women to get jobs. Although it is harder, women are trying very hard and are joining the workforce
in huge numbers. These women are then forced to share the money they have earned with their husbands. Saudi women are making a statement but
saying that a woman that is working should get to spend what she has earned ("Movement Grows In"). This shows that women are making a difference
and standing up for what they believe should happen in the workforce. Although, Saudi Arabia isn't the only country that is starting to allow women to

Reflection On Gender Equality
Ever since I could remember, women have always been marginalized from society and more specifically women have been degraded when it came
in comparison to men. It's unfortunate and bickering that this still goes on today, people don't understand and aren't willing to accept the role of a
women and how strong and capable they are to do anything a man can do. In class, we have learned and covered a various amount of topics and I
believe that gender inequality is a very interesting topic that has captivated my mind. Primarily because I am a women of color, already being a woman
is enough of a disadvantage, but to even add woman of color really ties the knot of my luck. The color of my skin and gender can dictate whether I
get the job or not, whether I get a promotion or not, whether I get paid more or less, whether I get accused or attacked, etc. The list is endless and
women are constantly being judged for their actions and when they do decide to stand up and fight back, they're viewed as a joke. I am tired of this
inequality and am hoping someday all women get the same treatment as men, not just white women but all women. Women are just as deserving to
pursue their goals and aspirations as any man, so I believe gender equality is a huge goal that we need to aim towards, not only for the benefit of
women but for the benefit of everyone. Once people learn to open the doors for women and more importantly women of color, things will start to
change in a positive form. There

What Is Gender Equality? Essay
What is gender equality? Gender equality is when both genders, male and female can enjoy the same rights as one another – they are considered each
other's equals. When thinking about gender equality it seems straight forward, both genders are equal – having all the same rights, treated with the
same amount of respect. I ask myself why would it be any other way? We are all people at the end of the day, equality should be a given.
"Gender empowerment doesn 't mean discrimination; it only means equality."
― Mohith Agadi
This however isn't the case and both genders are being discriminated against during our everyday lives. They are often not considered equals but
pitted against each other and made to look as enemies. For this we can only thank ourselves, we have allowed this not only to happen in the first
place but to continue for centuries. The media plays a major part in this, by displaying each gender in specific roles to fit the ideas that have been
placed on them since the beginning of time. But it can't all be negative, slowly the population is making positive changes to how we view one another
and even the media is climbing on board.
During this essay, I will explore what part the media plays in relation to gender roles, comparing both male and female imagery that is pushed on us
daily. I will explain how the media has played its part in preventing gender equality and my views on what we can do to make a change. I will also

Gender Equality Essay example
Equality, as we know it today, has been formed and molded into an idea that is still changing. Government officials, laws, and most influentially,
people of the United States, have aided in the prevention of oppression towards women of all races and classes. The efforts of these individuals are
counteracted with instances throughout history to prove that these men and women are not treated as if there were an equal condition. There are many
instances of discrimination still present today, and one place it is most relevant is in the workplace. Not only are workers separated by gender in their
place of work, but also, many women are being segregated inside their own group by race. Suzanne Pharr's book...show more content...
Women's low self esteem is only furthered by their mistreatment in the workplace. Pharr's pyramidal graph demonstrates thatwhite males are placed on
the top of the pyramid, with white women following below, and then furthered by men of color and finally women of color. This model of patriarchy
is exemplified in the workplace, providing women with lower wages, worse working conditions, and more degrading jobs. Kessler–Harris looks to the
"family wage" that society has created and points to its importance in the workplace. The most responsibility and obligation is placed on the father or
husband only thwarting women's internalized oppression even further. This point can be used in conjunction with Pharr's patriarchal pyramid.
Kessler–Harris and Pharr prove that this discrimination towards women in the workplace is only the beginning of many inequalities occurring inside
the social category of women.
While feminists and other activists have fought for equal rights, their motive is still taking place inside the work place only under different
conditions. Not only have women felt subordinate to men, but also now there is an apparent division between the races of these women. Beverly
Jones's article Black Female Tobacco Workers in Durham, N.C. is a relevant example to the numerous obstacles minority women have faced from this
problem of equal rights. During the years from 1920 to 1940, the large tobacco

What Are The Barriers Of Gender Equality
Today, the world is not doing as well as people would like: gender equality has yet to be achieved, climate change is putting millions at risk,
two–hundred million people are unemployed, and people are more stressed than ever. Trying to solve these world challenges, people are working
more and more hours, yet little progress is being made. The solution is rather simple: work less.
Women around the world are under–represented in the workforce, making up less than 20% of CEO positions, and, in America, fewer than 20% of
Congressional positions are filled by women. Reasons for this lack of representation may be due to prejudice, but it is important to recognize that
women are viewed as the primary child caregiver in most families. For this reason, many women take off work for several months after childbirth
and are often thwarted from higher positions because they take leave. If both males and females had shorter work weeks, then both genders would
be able to devote more time to child care, allowing women to continue to work sooner and progress in their fields. In addition, studies have shown
that men who take paternity leave are more devoted to their families and are 50% more likely to help their wives with domestic labor, such as
cooking, cleaning, and laundry. Thus, the shorter work week would lead to both equal representation in the work place and at home, subsequently,
breaking the barriers of gender inequality.
Shorter work weeks will not only benefit parents, but they

Research Proposal : Gender Equality
Research Proposal: Gender Equality in America
For my research project, I would like to show the evolution of gender equality that has occurred in American society in the workplace. The disparity
of status and privileges between men and women has existed since the end of the World War II. Although America has made progress concerning the
acceptance of social issues such as same sex relationship and marriage, people are still unwilling to acknowledge that gender inequality is still rampant
among our society. Gender equality hasn't been achieved yet, particularly in corporate America that has an insignificant number of women in the
upper ranks; fewer women occupy a post of chief executive officer, chief financial officer, or any other leading positions. For my research question
I will be asking: "How is America making progress on gender equity?" Fundamentally, I believe that women are still misrepresented, and are still
facing many challenges in the workplace, especially in the business world. The gender stereotypes play a considerable role in the way the society sees
women as leaders. However, it will be judicious to consider the small but noticeable changes that have been made over the past years concerning
gender equality in the American workplace.
The research on the evolution of gender equality is related to my success, because as a women business major, it is my responsibility to be aware of
the issues women face in the business world, dominated by men.

Essay On Gender Equality
Equality has been a fighting issue for centuries, whether in race, gender, religion, etc. While strides have occurred to decrease these discrimination,
there are still a plethora of situations fought within the government to create a safe space for all and create equitable opportunity for all. Within the
political and economic world, one battle being fought is the barrier of gender equality amongst employees.
Gender inequality became socially normal especially within the workplace, a social normative implemented into people's mind since youth.
Implications are created by society on the role of women in the workplace, limiting the exploration for woman to expand into new, higher professions.
Society pressures women into lower position jobs rather than providing equitable opportunity to proceed into higher position jobs. Research
accumulated by CNN concluded that only 14.2% of the top five leadership positions at the companies are women. Women obtain far fewer positions
in high paying jobs due to past dictation that a woman's place is within "soft" jobs, though women have begun to perforate this predetermined
situation by integrating themselves in a myriad of different careers. Another research, done by Harvard Business, states that "On average men's
projects had budgets twice as big and three times as many staffers as women's" (Harvard Business Review). Not only do women acquire lower
position jobs, but when they do achieve these jobs, men receive more beneficial resources

Essay On Gender Equality In Canada
Canada is generally perceived as a country of freedom and equity in all aspects around the world. But in fact, gender equality has not yet been reached
in our society. According to statistics, Canada was only ranked 35th on World Economic Forum gender gap list ("Global Gender Gap List Puts Canada
at 35th"). Throughout history, activists have variously prioritized identities rooted in class, race, sexuality, age, gender and ability, but changes will
need to continue in our current society and in the future. The women's movement was ultimately one of the most significant event in Canadian history,
as it challenged the patriarchal society and set the basis of gender equality, which has become an important element of Canadian identity today. Life

Women's movements in present days, mainly focus on wage equality, domestic abuse, stereotypes, bias and women's right in the political field (The
Modern Women's Movement, par. 2). Shockingly, wage gaps have been one of the biggest issues that requires progress to be made. Based on reports,
the average income is $40,000 for men, $35,014 for women in Canada. Also, women need to take more leadership roles, as the number of female
representatives in the political system has been inadequate ("Global Gender Gap List Puts Canada at 35th"). Lastly, we need to keep in mind that not
Canadian women gained their rights at the same time, Aboriginal women and women of other race gained their rights much later than European
women. "One of the things that we do have to remember, it wasn't all women who got the vote at that time," Dodd said. "We waited until 1960 for
women in the indigenous community to have access to the vote." (Cuciz, par. 7). It is important to realize that discrimination towards women still
exists today, and actions must be taken to prevent this from

Examples Of Gender Equality In The Workplace
Workplace gender equality
"Women cannot be as effective as men" is often a statement that has been used in defense by those found guilty of undermining women. Yet, women
have grown to take up positions of leadership that they were feared to not being able to handle. Women can be just as hard working as men and even
surpass when it comes to performance in any given position. Men, on the other hand, have always had the assumption of being naturally gifted at
anything they do, sometimes without even trying: that is, however, changing sighting the changes that have been taking place in the world. A
paramount example can be seen in politics, with women like Hilary Clinton, running for presidential office. There are ongoing debates, nevertheless,
that women almost in all occasions must do something extra in order to achieve same results as would men without breaking a sweat. This can be
seen by the appraisal of women in the workplace, which has in line pushed men to be the ones doing an additional entail to achieve given results. A
work place should not be run by a specific gender, neither should a given gender be able to say that they perform more or gave more, it should be an
environment characterized by equality. This paper purposes to address the question whether gender equality exists at the workplace or not.
Foundation of my thesis is the article, GENDER EQUALITY IN THE WORKPLACE: Moving from Practices to Strategy. The article has been written

Gender Equity Essay
Gender Equity
Are male students and female student's receiving the same opportunities when it comes to Math and Science in the schools? I don't believe they are.
This is why gender equity is a major problem facing our schools today. Many girls are having very negative attitudes towards Math and Science.
Through doing research on this topic I found out why.
In the article How Research Helps Address Gender Equity, a very shocking and eye opening thing was written. I learned that children as young as
kindergarten already have formed set stereotypes about Science and Math. The boys in the class wanted to and believed that they could be Scientist
while the girls in the class did not. They perceived being a...show more content...
He also seemed to talk down to the girls. My self–esteem in Math wasn't good going into this course and when I came out of it, it only became worse. I
was terrified of
Math. I don't think my Math teacher or other teachers intentionally call on boys and encourage them more but it ends up happening anyway. Another
problem that girls are faced with is they aren't getting the same opportunities and encouragement that boys receive in lab experiments. All of these
things play a big factor in girls having low self–esteem when it comes to Math and Science.
When doing my research on gender equity, I found a lot of good steps taken to improve the equality of boys and girls in school. One of the first
things that needs to be done is a teacher assessment. The article Fair and Square, says that the teacher should have a friend or colleague come into
the class to do the assessment. The observer would write a 'b' if the teacher asked a boy the question and a 'g' if the teacher asked the girl the
question. The observer would also "make a brief notation of the type of reaction you make to each child, whether it's praise, criticism, remediation, or
acceptance"(Sadker , Sadker ,
Stulberg, 2001 ). I think this assessment is a good idea. However, I would think if the teacher knew that he/she was being assessed they would be
more conscience of calling on both boys and girls the same

Women Equality Essay
The concept of equality between men and women has been heavily deliberated for the past few decades, but as we discussed in class throughout the
week, it's become increasingly clear that people have drastically different ideas on what constitutes equality. Originally, when posed the question, I
brought up the more prominent issues facing women in our society, politically, socially, and economically. Politically, I believe that for men and
women to be equal, women need to be proportionately represented in government, from local offices to the oval office. I personally discovered the
importance of this issue when I realized that women make up less than 20% of Congress, thus making men the primary deciders of women's issues.
This is a...show more content...
My classmate, Elise Favvia, added to this by dictating how, as a STEM major, she often sees women underrepresented in the field as well as noting
that many other western nations allow women paid maternity leave, while the United States has yet to. Overall, these were my initial ideas on the
conditions for equality of men and women in our society. However, through my small group discussion and class discussion, I realized that I focused
on the surface issues but I overlooked the deeper underlying issues that should be addressed. For instance, Kexin Li brought up the idea
intersectionality. She explained how it was necessary to recognize that women are not a single, homogenous group, but rather a diverse group with
sub–sections that each have their own issues. This led her to discussing the difference between equity and equality, as equity implies noting people's
differences and reaching equality through helping each group with their distinct needs, while equality implies treating everyone equally, which, now
knowing the concept of intersectionality, might not actually create equality of the sexes. I deeply resonated with these ideas, as I had heard of
intersectionality before, but I had never thought of it as a "condition for equality", however, Kexin Li's explanation convinced me otherwise. An idea
from the class discussion that resonated with me was Alexis Availes' idea of "leadership rhetoric", specifically in public documents. She

Gender Equality And Its Effects On Society

  • 1. Gender Equality And Its Effects On Society Like most societies, Canada too makes distinctions between males and females in what is called a gender society; males commonly monopolize politics, and engage in activities that are considered more noteworthy (Fleras, 2012, p. 155 & 156). Females on the other hand are often expected to take on maternal and parental roles, however this is often seen as work that is not important within many societies (Fleras, 2012, p. 155 & 156). These expectations, compounded with the fact that females have constantly been denied rights; both in the past as well as the present, makes it clear that being a female in any part of the world is extremely difficult. In looking at the gender equality issues that exist, you must ask yourself: why would someone want to be female in a society that favours men? Well imagine if you were born a male, but felt like a female on the inside. Statistics show that this occurs in 1 in every 30,000 born males, and 1 in every 100,000 born females (Butcher, Mineka, Hooley, Taylor, & Antony, 2010, p. 474). The term transgender has been used to represent individuals whose gender identity and/or gender expression do not match the biological gender they were born with (Stroumsa, 2014, p. 1). Individuals who choose to transition from their biological gender into their gender identity are faced with multiple barriers especially individuals who have transitioned into females. Being female anywhere is difficult, therefore being a transgender female is especially Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Essay On Gender Equality Everybody is born equal, but are not treated equally. Gender equality has been an ongoing fight in the United States for decades. The majority of people in the United States would agree that equality is fantastic and that there could be no downside to complete equality. However, in the case of gender equality (only referring to male and female), it may be better for one gender to dominate a particular role to increase effectiveness. This only applies to some specialized fields, such as the military, teaching, and child care. The push for gender equality has always been led by women, as males have historically dominated all positions of power (with a few exceptions), in both politics and business. Today, many actively push for more women in male dominated roles, and more males in female dominated roles. One such male role is in the military. There are also those who fight for more balance between men and women in teaching and childcare. In these cases, scientific studies may suggest that having more women in combat and more men in childcare and teaching may not be as much of a positive endeavor as some may think. Women are generally not as well equipped for combat as men are. Men are generally not as well equipped for dealing with children as women are. Biological differences play a serious role in how effective certain jobs can be. War and conflict between humans has always been around, and always will be. Historically, men have always been the warriors. There have been Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. The Pros And Cons Of Gender Equity Gender Equity From the day that individuals are born stereotypes of males and females are impressed upon them. Most people believe that males are supposed to be competitive, aggressive and logical thinkers among other masculine traits. Females on the other hand should be sociable, passive and emotional thinkers . People all over the world accept all of these stereotypes of females and males. These stereotypes also carry over into the way teachers conduct their classrooms. In education both genders have advantages and disadvantages in different areas. Most people believe that boys receive more attention then girls. Male students seem to talk more then females during class. They also tend to call out answers and therefore are given more...show more content... There was very little difference in the success rate between boys and girls before their first year of algebra (Silvey & Smart, 1982). As students started to take higher–level math courses boys began to surpass girls. However, a study done by Fennema and Sherman (1978) showed that girls were achieving as well as boys in two of the four high schools and in three of the four middle schools selected to be examined. Another study conducted by Armstrong (California Assessment Program, 1978) showed that there was little or no difference in the results of a performance test given to both genders. On the other hand girls surpass boys in the areas of reading and writing. The main difference between male and females in this particular area is that girls just simple read more then boys. Reading is also strongly linked to social class and how much one is able to retain what he or she has just read (Barrs and Pidgeon, 1994). Boys mature slower then girls, especially in the area of verbal skills. The second difference relates to the content of the reading. Girls like to read fiction or fantasy stories and males like to read about sports, hobbies and science (Shapiro& Kramer & Hunerberg, 1981). Teachers need to recognize these prototypes and learn how to get both genders involved in every type of reading materials. The third difference is in the area of achievement because Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Transgender Equality Adrienne Helm Mrs. Barnes E401 11 December 2017 Transgender Equality Everyone is assigned a gender at birth and they are expected to play the role of that gender. Everyone is expected to dress like, play like, and behave like whatever gender is assigned at birth. Humans in society today have it fixed in their brains' that there is a specific way of living and any other way of living is wrong. So when people start to behave and dress like the gender opposite of the one given at birth, they are frowned upon and discriminated against. People fear things they do not understand and when that fear takes over, the misunderstood are treated poorly. Unfortunately, transgender people are very misunderstood and are often discriminated against. Transgender people are constantly being judged and ridiculed simply because they are different. It is true that accepting people that are different is difficult, but should a group of people be treated unfairly for being themselves? This is a big problem transgender people deal with daily. Discrimination against transgender people has made their lives really hard due to high unemployment rates, risk of incarceration, and constant threat of being harassed. Transgender people have so much to offer to the world, but until people accept them for who they are, the world will never see that. For these reasons, transgender equality should be enforced everywhere. Transgender people deserve to be treated equally because they are unable to get jobs and Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Women 's Rights And Gender Equality Essay All men and women were created equal. However, this obvious truth is not universally shared. Fortunately, there is a very real fight for gender equality that we are currently engaged in, and a participant in that fight that holds a fundamental role are non–governmental organizations (NGOs). NGOs exist as private, voluntary organizations that function without government restriction and bias because they are not for profit and not funded by the government. These organizations coordinate strategies in order to "perform a variety of services and humanitarian functions, bring citizen concerns to governments, advocate and monitor policies and encourage political participation through provision of information." These core characteristics of NGOs meld and cooperate to advocate for women's rights and gender equality. These organizations are actually quite effective in achieving their missions of promoting women's rights and gender equality. Women's rights NGOs led the General Assembly to adopt the Declaration on the Elimination of All Forms of Violence Against Women. Women's rights NGOs advocate for the idea that women's rights are included inhuman rights. In Nicholas D. Kristof 's and Sheryl WuDunn's bestselling novel, Half the Sky, readers are introduced to the many plights that women suffer from in countries all over the world. Sex trafficking, forced prostitution leading to the abuse of women and young girls, AIDS, and other sexually transmitted diseases are all very real Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Gender Equality Essay In today's world, when you look around there are so many different types of people. Different races, different backgrounds, and also different stories. We live in a world of a diverse group of people. Some would think living in such a diverse world we would form a common ground and maybe unite together to be "equal" but that is far from true. No I'm not talking about the inequality of people based off of race or background, the grouping of sex is the issue here. From the beginning of time till now, cultural practices have formed these boundaries. There has always been a separation of males and females and the way they are raised and taught even to what occupations they take on. Over time these became a set of gender boundaries. I believe...show more content... Lorber focuses on the biological differences between male and female. She goes into detail about how women are separated or treated differently from men just because of a biological difference. In comparison, Tannen discusses the behavior and language of males and females in a classroom setting, discussing how males take on different types of questions and public speaking differently than females. She discusses how males and females learn to participate in different ways. Between the two authors, there is one point that serves for the basis of my argument and that would be the inequality that both genders face due to these gender boundaries. For example, in Lorber's essay, she formulates a issues called the Bathroom Problem. This is a perfect example of how society tries to make both sexes equal when in reality, they are not. In this Bathroom Problem, we give both males and females the same amount of bathroom facilities. But as Lorber states on page 732, "[A]lthough an equal number of bathrooms seems fair, equality would mean more women's bathrooms or allowing women to use men's bathrooms for a certain amount of time." (732). If you want both sexes to be equal, then help both sexes out by giving them the supplies or facilities that they need. This point also ties into Tannen's argument about how both male and female students participate Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Future Of Gender Inequality Equality is 'the state of being equal' (Collins, pg.182). A topic of recognition in philosophical sociology and mass communication sources is gender equality. Members of a democratic society consider equality to be a moral which is followed by everyone. Moving towards equality is an objective in todays world. There is no doubt that inequality is still present in the 21st century and it remains a concern. It generates a continuous pattern of obstacles that effects the rights of women in the future and creates a new inequality. This essay will talk aboutgender equality in the UK from 4 different aspects; Culture, Media, Education and then Employment. Cultural stereotypes increase discrimination against women which can enforce social roles and increase gender inequality. An overall image was created to show traditional roles on basis of sex. Social stereotypes has been practiced against women and is a fact. In April 2012, a British feminist Laura Bates established a project to collect cultural abuse from all over the world. The Everyday Sexism Project received 25,000 entries from 15 countries by April 2013 (Laura, The Guardian). Also, Lad culture which is a British subculture raised in the early 90's was reintroduced and that will have a great impact on the future of gender equality. In 2003 the ability of women to participate politics was decreased due to lad culture affects.(Gates, Charlie). in April 2014 the UN special rapporteur on violence against women recorded that Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. The Importance Of Gender Equality Ever since the beginning of time, women have been fighting endlessly to be treated equally and fairly, whether it's in their personal life, their business careers, or their social encounters. From the day in which women are born, they are raised and treated differently compared to men. Girls are expected to be sensitive and sweet, meanwhile boys are usually more tough, and expected to mature a bit faster. Girls are protected more in comparison to boys and as they grow, the way society treats each gender stands out more. Women are limited to certain professions because they are not men, and in situations where they can actually work the same jobs, they are paid much less. Throughout time, women all over the world continue to be sexualized and judged based on their personal opinions. While many nations have slowly begun to embrace women's equal rights, Islam continues to oppress women by limiting their self–expression, using their religious misconceptions to abuse and control them as a whole, and constantly maintaining old cultural traditions that prevent freedom and equality for women. As formerly stated, women's rights across the world are slowly increasing while they remain the same or even worse in some parts of the world. In America, women can vote, be a part of Congress, choose whatever career they want to study, live wherever they please, marry whoever they love, and much more. In Europe, gender equality is one of the core values in their initial founding treaties, and Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Gender Equality Essay Gender Equality in Today's Workforce In today's business environment, women get paid on average 12–30% less than men. This affects their ways of living and retirement options. To this day, women still have less rights when it comes to workforce in many Asian and European countries. Men are the preferredgender because they are perceived to be smarter. In many countries, women are limited on the amount of education they can receive. Women are not treated fairly in the workforce because it harder for them to get jobs, they get paid less than men, and men are thought to be smarter than women. It is very difficult for women to get jobs compared to men. Men are the preferred choice of employment over women in many situations ("Chapter 4"). Even when the job might be more suited for a female, men are still preferred in some places. Currently the only country to not permit women to drive is Saudi Arabia. This makes it very hard for those women to get jobs. Although it is harder, women are trying very hard and are joining the workforce in huge numbers. These women are then forced to share the money they have earned with their husbands. Saudi women are making a statement but saying that a woman that is working should get to spend what she has earned ("Movement Grows In"). This shows that women are making a difference and standing up for what they believe should happen in the workforce. Although, Saudi Arabia isn't the only country that is starting to allow women to Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Reflection On Gender Equality Ever since I could remember, women have always been marginalized from society and more specifically women have been degraded when it came in comparison to men. It's unfortunate and bickering that this still goes on today, people don't understand and aren't willing to accept the role of a women and how strong and capable they are to do anything a man can do. In class, we have learned and covered a various amount of topics and I believe that gender inequality is a very interesting topic that has captivated my mind. Primarily because I am a women of color, already being a woman is enough of a disadvantage, but to even add woman of color really ties the knot of my luck. The color of my skin and gender can dictate whether I get the job or not, whether I get a promotion or not, whether I get paid more or less, whether I get accused or attacked, etc. The list is endless and women are constantly being judged for their actions and when they do decide to stand up and fight back, they're viewed as a joke. I am tired of this inequality and am hoping someday all women get the same treatment as men, not just white women but all women. Women are just as deserving to pursue their goals and aspirations as any man, so I believe gender equality is a huge goal that we need to aim towards, not only for the benefit of women but for the benefit of everyone. Once people learn to open the doors for women and more importantly women of color, things will start to change in a positive form. There Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. What Is Gender Equality? Essay What is gender equality? Gender equality is when both genders, male and female can enjoy the same rights as one another – they are considered each other's equals. When thinking about gender equality it seems straight forward, both genders are equal – having all the same rights, treated with the same amount of respect. I ask myself why would it be any other way? We are all people at the end of the day, equality should be a given. "Gender empowerment doesn 't mean discrimination; it only means equality." ― Mohith Agadi This however isn't the case and both genders are being discriminated against during our everyday lives. They are often not considered equals but pitted against each other and made to look as enemies. For this we can only thank ourselves, we have allowed this not only to happen in the first place but to continue for centuries. The media plays a major part in this, by displaying each gender in specific roles to fit the ideas that have been placed on them since the beginning of time. But it can't all be negative, slowly the population is making positive changes to how we view one another and even the media is climbing on board. During this essay, I will explore what part the media plays in relation to gender roles, comparing both male and female imagery that is pushed on us daily. I will explain how the media has played its part in preventing gender equality and my views on what we can do to make a change. I will also take time to point out the positive people Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. Gender Equality Essay example Equality, as we know it today, has been formed and molded into an idea that is still changing. Government officials, laws, and most influentially, people of the United States, have aided in the prevention of oppression towards women of all races and classes. The efforts of these individuals are counteracted with instances throughout history to prove that these men and women are not treated as if there were an equal condition. There are many instances of discrimination still present today, and one place it is most relevant is in the workplace. Not only are workers separated by gender in their place of work, but also, many women are being segregated inside their own group by race. Suzanne Pharr's book...show more content... Women's low self esteem is only furthered by their mistreatment in the workplace. Pharr's pyramidal graph demonstrates thatwhite males are placed on the top of the pyramid, with white women following below, and then furthered by men of color and finally women of color. This model of patriarchy is exemplified in the workplace, providing women with lower wages, worse working conditions, and more degrading jobs. Kessler–Harris looks to the "family wage" that society has created and points to its importance in the workplace. The most responsibility and obligation is placed on the father or husband only thwarting women's internalized oppression even further. This point can be used in conjunction with Pharr's patriarchal pyramid. Kessler–Harris and Pharr prove that this discrimination towards women in the workplace is only the beginning of many inequalities occurring inside the social category of women. While feminists and other activists have fought for equal rights, their motive is still taking place inside the work place only under different conditions. Not only have women felt subordinate to men, but also now there is an apparent division between the races of these women. Beverly Jones's article Black Female Tobacco Workers in Durham, N.C. is a relevant example to the numerous obstacles minority women have faced from this problem of equal rights. During the years from 1920 to 1940, the large tobacco Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. What Are The Barriers Of Gender Equality Today, the world is not doing as well as people would like: gender equality has yet to be achieved, climate change is putting millions at risk, two–hundred million people are unemployed, and people are more stressed than ever. Trying to solve these world challenges, people are working more and more hours, yet little progress is being made. The solution is rather simple: work less. Women around the world are under–represented in the workforce, making up less than 20% of CEO positions, and, in America, fewer than 20% of Congressional positions are filled by women. Reasons for this lack of representation may be due to prejudice, but it is important to recognize that women are viewed as the primary child caregiver in most families. For this reason, many women take off work for several months after childbirth and are often thwarted from higher positions because they take leave. If both males and females had shorter work weeks, then both genders would be able to devote more time to child care, allowing women to continue to work sooner and progress in their fields. In addition, studies have shown that men who take paternity leave are more devoted to their families and are 50% more likely to help their wives with domestic labor, such as cooking, cleaning, and laundry. Thus, the shorter work week would lead to both equal representation in the work place and at home, subsequently, breaking the barriers of gender inequality. Research Proposal : Gender Equality Research Proposal: Gender Equality in America For my research project, I would like to show the evolution of gender equality that has occurred in American society in the workplace. The disparity of status and privileges between men and women has existed since the end of the World War II. Although America has made progress concerning the acceptance of social issues such as same sex relationship and marriage, people are still unwilling to acknowledge that gender inequality is still rampant among our society. Gender equality hasn't been achieved yet, particularly in corporate America that has an insignificant number of women in the upper ranks; fewer women occupy a post of chief executive officer, chief financial officer, or any other leading positions. For my research question I will be asking: "How is America making progress on gender equity?" Fundamentally, I believe that women are still misrepresented, and are still facing many challenges in the workplace, especially in the business world. The gender stereotypes play a considerable role in the way the society sees women as leaders. However, it will be judicious to consider the small but noticeable changes that have been made over the past years concerning gender equality in the American workplace. The research on the evolution of gender equality is related to my success, because as a women business major, it is my responsibility to be aware of the issues women face in the business world, dominated by men. • 15. Essay On Gender Equality Equality has been a fighting issue for centuries, whether in race, gender, religion, etc. While strides have occurred to decrease these discrimination, there are still a plethora of situations fought within the government to create a safe space for all and create equitable opportunity for all. Within the political and economic world, one battle being fought is the barrier of gender equality amongst employees. Research accumulated by CNN concluded that only 14.2% of the top five leadership positions at the companies are women. Women obtain far fewer positions in high paying jobs due to past dictation that a woman's place is within "soft" jobs, though women have begun to perforate this predetermined situation by integrating themselves in a myriad of different careers. Another research, done by Harvard Business, states that "On average men's projects had budgets twice as big and three times as many staffers as women's" (Harvard Business Review). Not only do women acquire lower position jobs, but when they do achieve these jobs, men receive more beneficial resources Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 16. Essay On Gender Equality In Canada Canada is generally perceived as a country of freedom and equity in all aspects around the world. But in fact, gender equality has not yet been reached in our society. According to statistics, Canada was only ranked 35th on World Economic Forum gender gap list ("Global Gender Gap List Puts Canada at 35th"). Throughout history, activists have variously prioritized identities rooted in class, race, sexuality, age, gender and ability, but changes will need to continue in our current society and in the future. The women's movement was ultimately one of the most significant event in Canadian history, as it challenged the patriarchal society and set the basis of gender equality, which has become an important element of Canadian identity today. Life before the movements Before the feminist movements, the...show more content... Women's movements in present days, mainly focus on wage equality, domestic abuse, stereotypes, bias and women's right in the political field (The Modern Women's Movement, par. 2). Shockingly, wage gaps have been one of the biggest issues that requires progress to be made. Based on reports, the average income is $40,000 for men, $35,014 for women in Canada. Also, women need to take more leadership roles, as the number of female representatives in the political system has been inadequate ("Global Gender Gap List Puts Canada at 35th"). Lastly, we need to keep in mind that not Canadian women gained their rights at the same time, Aboriginal women and women of other race gained their rights much later than European women. "One of the things that we do have to remember, it wasn't all women who got the vote at that time," Dodd said. "We waited until 1960 for women in the indigenous community to have access to the vote." (Cuciz, par. 7). It is important to realize that discrimination towards women still exists today, and actions must be taken to prevent this from Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. Examples Of Gender Equality In The Workplace Workplace gender equality "Women cannot be as effective as men" is often a statement that has been used in defense by those found guilty of undermining women. Yet, women have grown to take up positions of leadership that they were feared to not being able to handle. Women can be just as hard working as men and even surpass when it comes to performance in any given position. Men, on the other hand, have always had the assumption of being naturally gifted at anything they do, sometimes without even trying: that is, however, changing sighting the changes that have been taking place in the world. A paramount example can be seen in politics, with women like Hilary Clinton, running for presidential office. There are ongoing debates, nevertheless, that women almost in all occasions must do something extra in order to achieve same results as would men without breaking a sweat. This can be seen by the appraisal of women in the workplace, which has in line pushed men to be the ones doing an additional entail to achieve given results. A work place should not be run by a specific gender, neither should a given gender be able to say that they perform more or gave more, it should be an environment characterized by equality. This paper purposes to address the question whether gender equality exists at the workplace or not. Foundation of my thesis is the article, GENDER EQUALITY IN THE WORKPLACE: Moving from Practices to Strategy. The article has been written by three authors namely Towns, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 18. Gender Equity Essay Gender Equity Are male students and female student's receiving the same opportunities when it comes to Math and Science in the schools? I don't believe they are. This is why gender equity is a major problem facing our schools today. Many girls are having very negative attitudes towards Math and Science. Through doing research on this topic I found out why. In the article How Research Helps Address Gender Equity, a very shocking and eye opening thing was written. I learned that children as young as kindergarten already have formed set stereotypes about Science and Math. The boys in the class wanted to and believed that they could be Scientist while the girls in the class did not. They perceived being a...show more content... He also seemed to talk down to the girls. My self–esteem in Math wasn't good going into this course and when I came out of it, it only became worse. I was terrified of Math. I don't think my Math teacher or other teachers intentionally call on boys and encourage them more but it ends up happening anyway. Another problem that girls are faced with is they aren't getting the same opportunities and encouragement that boys receive in lab experiments. All of these things play a big factor in girls having low self–esteem when it comes to Math and Science. When doing my research on gender equity, I found a lot of good steps taken to improve the equality of boys and girls in school. One of the first things that needs to be done is a teacher assessment. The article Fair and Square, says that the teacher should have a friend or colleague come into the class to do the assessment. The observer would write a 'b' if the teacher asked a boy the question and a 'g' if the teacher asked the girl the question. The observer would also "make a brief notation of the type of reaction you make to each child, whether it's praise, criticism, remediation, or acceptance"(Sadker , Sadker , Stulberg, 2001 ). I think this assessment is a good idea. However, I would think if the teacher knew that he/she was being assessed they would be more conscience of calling on both boys and girls the same Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 19. Women Equality Essay The concept of equality between men and women has been heavily deliberated for the past few decades, but as we discussed in class throughout the week, it's become increasingly clear that people have drastically different ideas on what constitutes equality. Originally, when posed the question, I brought up the more prominent issues facing women in our society, politically, socially, and economically. Politically, I believe that for men and women to be equal, women need to be proportionately represented in government, from local offices to the oval office. I personally discovered the importance of this issue when I realized that women make up less than 20% of Congress, thus making men the primary deciders of women's issues. This is a...show more content... My classmate, Elise Favvia, added to this by dictating how, as a STEM major, she often sees women underrepresented in the field as well as noting that many other western nations allow women paid maternity leave, while the United States has yet to. Overall, these were my initial ideas on the conditions for equality of men and women in our society. However, through my small group discussion and class discussion, I realized that I focused on the surface issues but I overlooked the deeper underlying issues that should be addressed. For instance, Kexin Li brought up the idea intersectionality. She explained how it was necessary to recognize that women are not a single, homogenous group, but rather a diverse group with sub–sections that each have their own issues. This led her to discussing the difference between equity and equality, as equity implies noting people's differences and reaching equality through helping each group with their distinct needs, while equality implies treating everyone equally, which, now knowing the concept of intersectionality, might not actually create equality of the sexes. I deeply resonated with these ideas, as I had heard of intersectionality before, but I had never thought of it as a "condition for equality", however, Kexin Li's explanation convinced me otherwise. An idea from the class discussion that resonated with me was Alexis Availes' idea of "leadership rhetoric", specifically in public documents. She Get more content on HelpWriting.net
