3. What is a blend?
• A blend is a mixture of two or more fibers.
• Each natural and man-made fibers have its own qualities.
• Blending allows us to combine the different qualities of fibers to
emphasize and minimize their bad qualities.
• Blending improves the performance of the fabric.
3
4. Mixing and blending
• When the same kind but different grades of fibers are mixed then it
is termed mixing
Low-graded cotton + High graded = Mixing
• When different types of fibers (may be equal or nearly equal graded)
are mixed within a particular ratio then the process is known as
blending.
Polyester + Cotton = blending

6. Polyester Cotton blend
Polyester cotton sometimes known as poly-cotton is a blend of
natural cotton and synthetic polyester fibers. Usually, the blend is a
ratio of 65% cotton and 35% polyester. It is not limited to such a
ratio, the other blend ratios are 67/33, 70/30, 50/50, 45/55, 52/48,
and 80/20.

7. Manufacturing of Polycotton blend
Polycotton fabric is manufactured by combining natural cotton fiber
with synthetic polyester fiber. The fusing of the fibers can be done at
either the fiber stage or at yarn stage. Also, it results in slightly more
expensive fabric combing than at the fiber stage tends to give a
superior quality.
7
8. • There are many ways to manufacture a product from two or more types of fibers.
• Yarns spun from different types of fibers can be combined into one fabric.
• Different yarns and filaments can be twisted together to form a complex yarn.
• Composite yarns can be made from combinations of staple fibers and filaments.
• Blended yarns can be spun from homogeneous blends of different types of staple
fibers.
• Different types of filament yarns can be combined into a complex yarn by twisting.

10. Purposes of Polycotton blend
Mixing of two fibers can utilize properties of different strengths,
dyeability and breathability, and many more. Cotton can be added to
polyester to give help the polyester more of a moisture-wicking
finish and polyester can be added to cotton to give it more durability
and flexibility.
10
11. Advantages of Polycotton Blend
• Cotton blend is to give long life to the cloth. Mixing of other strong
fabrics increases the life span of cloth.
• It is to increase the strength of the fabric.
• By making blends manufacturers reduce the cost of cloth. Cotton is a
rich fabric; reducing 30-40% cotton and adding other poor fabrics will
reduce its cost. Blending is not all about reducing cost but sometimes it
is the best technique to add some more features to the fabric.
11
12. Advantages of Polycotton Blend
• To get a special texture to touch and feel.
• To give amazing color to the fabric because it can give a wide
range of colors. This way manufacturers make clothes in multiple
colors to provide the desired color to the customer.
• To increase comfort.
• To make the cloth more absorbent.
• It also can improve thermal properties.
12
13. Disadvantages of polycotton blend
• The blending will become expensive if the blending is not aimed
to reduce the cost of fabric but to add some more good qualities.
• Holding moisture could be a good feature for a particular season
but not for others.
• The same kind of fibers (not durable fibers) will wear down first
and your cloth will become ugly.
13
14. Disadvantages of polycotton blend
• Problem of shrinkage and stretch. If the fabric is not made aiming
to give the feature of shrinkage, this would be a problem.
• Not surely good for all skins. Sometimes if you add synthetic
fibers to cotton, synthetic fibers can harm your skin. Not
frequently but, it is not necessary that the fabric came out of the
blend and is friendly to your skin.
14
16. • Singeing improves the hand, reduces pilling, and
increases the smoothness
• Anti-static finish reduces static electricity
• Water and stain repellency increases comfort and
makes it easier to clean, also used for rainwear
• Resin finishes increase ease of care
16
17. Chemical Properties Of Polycotton blend
• Calendaring increases smoothness and reduces pilling
• Embossing creates a design and/or luster
• Heat setting creates a permanent shape
17
18. Heat and water cause wrinkles. Heat
breaks the bonds holding polymers in
place within a fabric’s fibers. When the
bonds are broken, the fibers are less
rigid with respect to each other, so they
can shift into new positions. As the
fabric cools, new bonds form, locking
the fibers into a new shape.
18
20. Physical Properties of Polycotton Fibers
• Cotton fibers are natural hollow fibers; they are soft, cool, known
as breathable fibers, and absorbent. Cotton fibers can hold
water 24–27 times their own weight. They are strong and dye-
absorbent.
• Wrinkle resistant.
• Strong and durable.
20
21. Physical Properties of Polycotton Fibers
Can be ironed
easily.
Shrinks less than
pure cotton.
Retain color.
Cheaper than
100% cotton.
Fade resistant.

22
23. • Yarn count and polyester/cotton blend ratios have
significant effects on the comfort properties of the
fabric.
• Fabric air permeability, absorbency, and vertical
wicking time increased as the count of yarn
became fine, while drying time decreased with the
fine count.
23
24. • As the share of the polyester fiber in the blend
increased, fabric air permeability, vertical wicking
time, and drying time decreased, while
absorbency time increased.
