WHO WE ARE
BILL PHELAN
CEO & Co-Founder
College Factual
JOSH McWILLIAM
VP of Product & Co-Founder
College Factual
7
WHY WE DO IT
Our mission is to help students find the best-fit education their
money can buy.
One way we do this is by helping students discover excellent
colleges through our diverse rankings system.
We carry over 500 rankings.
8
OUR SHARED MISSION
College Factual and Chegg are working together to:
 Make rankings relevant
 Quit feeding the beast
Ranking criteria should be radically altered
 Free colleges from obsessing over rankings
Focus on what benefits students
 Educate students and parents to seek out
right school match
9
We have rankings that identify the best colleges in the following
categories, by many dimensions:
• Overall Quality
• Best for the Money
• Best for Veterans
• Athletics & Academics
• Diversity
• Religious Affiliation
• Best for the Major
• Best for the Field of Study
WHAT WE DO
WHAT MAKES OUR RANKINGS
DIFFERENT?
• We use objective data from over 40 sources and growing
• We are outcomes-focused
• We have the ability to rank more schools on more categories
• We generate over 500 rankings and insights published
nationally and internationally year-round, twice weekly

WELL RESPECTED
PATRICK FOSTER
USA Today
“Our audience has shown a tremendous interest in rankings,
from several angles, not the least of which is comparing and
contrasting institutions during their college search. The College
Factual data-driven rankings provide a fresh and relevant
alternative to the other rankings available from the mainstream
media. We’ve also seen a tremendous interest in rankings for
sports, as well as religion, factors that are important to students
but don’t always receive attention from main news sources."
12
We know that colleges and universities are under increasing scrutiny
and pressure from students, parents, and the government.
With that in mind, how are you going to show the value of your institution?
HOW CAN COLLEGE FACTUAL HELP YOU?
Our mission of helping students achieve their best-fit education
can be supported by helping you…
• Differentiate yourself based on your institutional strengths, using
rankings that are based on outputs and are customized to students
based on their needs.
• Boost recognition of your programs, as well as
improve student retention and graduate committed alumni.

• Today’s rankings are largely based on subjective inputs and
survey data
• While these provide some insight into the college landscape, they
do little to distinguish your institution for its programs or other
specific strengths

• We expose a core building block of the College Factual rankings
system
• Analyze the “inter-relatedness” of programs and majors way
beyond the classic definition of “related majors”
• Competitive analysis of your institution to your “peer group”
• Closer to “real world” relationships rather than classic
“educational” relationships
• Can serve as a planning tool for thinking about how course offerings
might be combined to create valuable concentrations for
students, yielding better results

Editor's Notes

  1. Do we need this?
  2. The majority of our data comes from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), from the National Center for Education Statistics—a branch of the Department of Education.  We also use data salary data from PayScale to come up with our graduate earning estimates.
  3. U.S. News segments their rankings into ten different buckets; national universities, national liberal arts colleges, four sets of regional universities, and four sets of regional colleges. A school will only show up in one of these buckets, reducing the number of schools competing for top ranking.  It may appear as if a particular college is ranked much higher in U.S. News than at College Factual. In reality, that is because the comparison pool is much smaller than our Best Colleges ranking, which puts all colleges and universities into one large bucket for a truly nationwide ranking.  We do believe that having various ways to segment rankings is a good thing. To this end, we offer both regional and state level rankings, and offer other ways to customize and filter rankings to suit each student.  We’ve found that a majority of the audience wants to know how a college ranks overall, which is why Best Colleges, our base ranking, evaluates all four-year colleges nationwide. With this at the foundation of our work, segmentation can be easily developed.
