2. POWER PLANT PRESENTATION 2016
SUMMARY OF MAJOR INTERVENTIONS ON
DESIGN AND SUPERVISION OF POWER PLANTS
It has been followed by interventions of different complexity, at Unimar TPP in
Ambarli (TR); Bandirma Natural Gas Combined Cycle Power Plant, 936.5 MW (TR);
Aliağa Thermal Power Plant, 350 MW (TR); Mesaieed (Qatar) ; Bekirli Coal-fired
Thermal Power Plant - 2x600 MW (TR); Al-Khalij Thermal Power Plant, 4x350 MW
(Libya); El Ain El Sokhna Supercritical Thermal PP - 2x650 MW (Egypt); Samsun
Combined Cycle Power Plant, 870 MW (TR); Atlas Iskenderun Coal-fired Thermal Power
Plant - 2x600 MW
Apart earlier interventions on the design of marine pipelines and intake structures, a
“full immersion” in the power plant sealine design and supervision started with the
Sugözü - 2x605 MW Power Plant in Turkey
The presentation does not include all other sealine
projects, ie. outfalls, pipelines for desalination plants
and collateral activities, which are covered by a more
general presentation of Avanzini Middle East.

AMBARLI, UNIMAR THERMAL P0WER PLANT
(2005)
Construction of new tapered diffuser, removal
of the existing one and connection of the new
one to the main line.
Contractor: STFA (TR)
The need of the substitution of the original
diffuser with a new one to be connected to the
main GRP pipeline ND2500 was originated by
updated thermal discharge requirements
While the construction of the new diffuser on
piling did not present in itself particular
problems, the removal of the old from the main
line and the connetion of the new was “space and
time limited”
9. POWER PLANT PRESENTATION 2016
It was requested to perform the connection respecting the
existing alignment and executing the intervention in less
than 12 hours to ovoid the interruption of the production.
The SOW was the study, together with the client’s and
contractors engineering team, of the necessary connection
tolerances and of the pipe spools and accessories to
compensate such tri-dimensional tolerances
A combination of GRP short
spools and of tailor-made
steel bolted Compression
Couplings, designed with
±200 mm longitudinal insertion
tolerance and ± 3° allowable angular deflection has been
used to compensate the installation misalignment.
The arrangement permitted the realization of the tie-in
in ≈8 hrs, practically without disturbance
to the TPP operation.

MESAIEED A (QATAR) 2009
LAND SECTION OF INTAKE LINE GRP ND 1800
ND 1800, 6 km long intake line on land under water
table level
The request of expertise had two main aspects.
The first was the peer-review of the main calculation
aspects, i.e. hydraulics, deflection, ovalization
etc. and the analysis of the possible tolerances.
The second aspect was the analysis of the leaks
which appeared after backfill and of their repair
with internal lamination using a technique and
materials proposed by the pipe supplier.
With a few exceptions,
all measured data of
gap, deflection and
ovalization were well
within the design
limits.
In a dewatered pipe, the system is acceptable
and has proven leakproof.

BEKİRLİ COAL-FIRED THERMAL POWER PLANT –
İÇDAŞ ELEKTRİK ENERJİSİ ÜRETİM ve YATIRIM A.Ş.
2 X 600 MW – TR (2010)
GRP ND 3500, 450 mm long intake line with a 90m
semi-buried diffuser at -35m
The SOW included several stages
• The coordination and assistance in the field to the
surveyor and assistance in the reporting
• Hydraulic and diffuser calculations and outline
design
• Preparation of the documents for the Ministerial
approval
• Analysis of the seismic profiles to
define the safest route and choice of
the centre line
14. POWER PLANT PRESENTATION 2016
After the choice, it was studied
a safe stabilization system along the 27% slope.
The risk was not only the sliding downwards of the
pipe, but also the eventual settlement.
The solution was found by
using 6 lateral marine lugs
and pipes with anti-sliding
ribs.
The upper bend was
connected with a steel
compression coupling
permitting a ±3° angular
deflection and the lower one
was anchored by a thrust
block.

16. POWER PLANT PRESENTATION 2016[SOKHNA 2]
The second part of the SOW has been the peer
review of the design “for construction”, the
evaluation and assessment of the installation
method, a part time installation control and the
verification of the pipe joints .
17. POWER PLANT PRESENTATION 2016[SOKHNA 3]
The pipes were connected across the joint with marine
lugs. Part of them were kept tight and part released after
installation.
A 16mm gap inside and a maximum 0.5° was specified at
each joint by the client. However, the couplings tightness
had been tested in the factory
with a 63mm gap and 1.2°
at 9 bar without leaks.
The measure of gaps in different stages of installation brought to
an animated discussion and to the definition of limits agreed
between client, pipe producer and contractor and accepted by us.
The study about the tolerances was the most interesting part of
the supervision.
The values of gaps in
4 points at each coupling
have been recorded immediately after each pipe’s
installation and after the completion of 100-120m
sections before the backfill.
Only minor changes due to local settlements have
been found and eventually corrected,
18. POWER PLANT PRESENTATION 2016
After the examination of the geometric parameters with the pipe supplier, it
was presented to the client a revision of the acceptable values (after backfill)
proposing 90 mm gap and 0,9°as “safe”. In theory, larger gaps could be
exceptionally accepted, provided that the position of the gasket from the
coupling edge was at least 25mm (defined as “gasket not visible”)
[SOKHNA 4]
It must be noted however that the value of
tolerances depend from the diameter, the
geometry of pipe spigot and of the double
bell coupling.
The comparison of the values
“before and after” demonstrated
that with the enhanced safe value
of the tolerances only 3% of the
joints needed a repair, mostly due
to the displacement of the gasket.
