In the D,O. letter read above, the Member Secretary, Chennai
Metropolitan Development Authorlty has stated as below: -
I. Chennai is a coastal city wlth a shoreline that extends ln stretches
between Ennore Creek ln the North and Kovalam in the South. Despite
having a natural and long coastllne, its access ls not continuous and
fragmented into,.stretches, and the .conservation of the coastline from a
climate perspectiVe remalns unattended. Marina Beach and Elliots Beach
(Besant Nagar) are the most popular of these stretches where the majority
of the public gather for recreatlon and leisure. Other than these two
beaches, there are approxirnately 20 other disconnected shorefronts which
are underutilized. ,
II. Further, coastal eroslon and accretion are phenomena that can
cause bad effects to the surroundings, Accordlng to National Centre for
Coastal Research, Chennai in lts 2018 report "The National Assessment of
shoreline thanges along Indian coast: status report for 26 years '
(1990-2016)".A stretch of 3 km along the coast faces low erosion and
'approximately 7 km stretch faces low accretion. Although the levels of
erosion and accretion are low, it is an appropriate time to inltiate the
envlronmental conservatlon and effectlve management of the coastllne as
a whole.
