Those structures that are similar will be easy to learn because they will be transferred and may function satisfactorily in the foreign language. Those
structures that are different will be difficult because when transferred they will not function satisfactorily in the foreign language and will therefore
have to be changed. We can say that the degree of control of these structures that are different is an index to how much of the language a person has
learned."
Simply put, Filipino learners of English language may find an edge through transferring their knowledge about the Filipino language and applying
similar concepts on learning English. Similarly, the difficulties may arise whenever there are concepts applicable in learning Filipino which are,
consequently, inapplicable in learning English. And that is the grounds of the conduction of this study.
Theoretical / Conceptual Framework
There are five components in Second Language Acquisition Theory. These are the following: Acquisition Learning Hypothesis, Monitor Hypothesis,

Difficulties In English Pronunciation
Q.3: describe the specific difficulties in English pronunciation met by a group of learners known to you. Pronunciation can be defined as the way in
which a person sounds the words of a language while speaking. Pronunciation is an aspect of verbal communication which makes it more effective and
attractive during communication with others. English is one of the most challenging languages to learn. But it is going to be easier to learn if we
already have knowledge of a language that has the same roots. English–language learning is hugely important in most Arabic–speaking countries;
people still communicate through speaking more than they do through writing. Therefore we must pay attention to pronunciation, as it contributes to
conveying the right message in an oral way. Arabic and English phonological system, are very different, not only in sound but also in the emphasis
placed on vowels and constant in expressing meaning. I have been teaching English for more than 10 years. Sometimes I find that it is difficult for
Arabic speaker students to pronounce very simple words, even after years of learning English. English pronunciation rules are very simple but the
learners should be aware of the rules and how to stress on letters during conversations to have clear speech. The difficulties in English pronunciation
arise amongst EFL Arab students from the fact that the sound systems of Arabic and English are different in many aspects. For all these reasons Arab
speakers might

Life's Problems Essay
Life's Problems Life is full of problems, but how we approach those problems often determines whether we're happy or miserable. Bob Maynard says,
"Problems are opportunities in disguise." If we approach problems with Maynard's attitude, we see that problems are really opportunities to learn about
others and ourselves. They enable us to live happier and more fulfilling lives. Maynard's quote applies to all kinds of problems. I faced a problem just
last week when our family's kitchen sink developed a serious leak. There was water all over our kitchen floor and piles of dishes to be washed. But our
landlord was out of town for the week. I come from a big family–I have six brothers and sisters–so we couldn't afford to wait until...show more content...
Whatever kind of situation we face, problems give us the chance to learn and grow, both physically and mentally. For example, when I had a problem
with my car and couldn't the repairs right away, my problem become an opportunity to get some exercise–something I'd been waiting to do anyway. I
had to walk a mile each day to get to the bus stop and back. But in the meantime, I got the chance to start getting back in shape, and I saved a lot on
gas. I've come to realize that problems are really part of what makes life worth living. Problems challenge us and give us the opportunity to do
things we've never done before, to learn things we never knew before. They give us the chance to surprise ourselves. Just the word "problem" can
send some of us into a panic. But problems can be good things, too. Problems are situations that make us think and force us to be creative and
resourceful. They can also teach us things we didn't know before. For example, I had a problem in school a few years ago when I couldn't understand
my math class. I started failing my quizzes and homework assignments. I wasn't sure what to so, so finally I went to the teacher and asked for help.
She said she would arrange for me to be tutored by another student who was her best student. In return, though, I'd have to help that student around
school. I wasn't sure what she

For many L2 learners, learning grammar often means learning the rules of grammar and having an intellectual knowledge of grammar. Teachers often
believe that this will provide the generative basis on which learners can build their knowledge and will be able to use the language eventually. For
them, prescribed rules give a kind of security. International Journal of Instruction, July 2011 в—Џ Vol.4, No.2 Al–Mekhlafi & Nagaratnam 71 A better
approach is perhaps to see grammar as one of many resources that we have in language which helps us to communicate. We should see how
grammar relates to what we want to say or write, and how we expect others to interpret what our language use and its focus. According to Widdowson
(1990: 86), " . . . grammar is not a constraining imposition but a liberating force: it frees us from a dependency on context and a purely lexical
categorization of reality." Given that many learners – and teachers – tend to view grammar as a set of restrictions on what is allowed and disallowed in
language use – 'a linguistic straitjacket' in Larsen–Freeman's words (2002: 103) – the conception of grammar as something that liberates rather than
represses is one that is worth investigating. According to Morelli (2003), students perceived themselves as having a better attitude towards grammar
instruction in context, while

The Difficulties And Challenges Facing Students
Abstract
Writing has always been regarded as playing a prominent role in learning a second language. The purpose of this research was to investigate the
difficulties and challenges facing students in writing and spelling, the factors causing these difficulties and how to overcome these challenges.
A total of 30 female students from three different female secondary schools in the Al–Kharj city participated in the study, and 6 teachers teaching
English language for secondary levels with different teaching experiences. Questionnaires were used to gather information from the participants. The
overall results demonstrated the students' negative views towards writing. The findings revealed that students have problems in writing, especially in
language use (grammar). The major findings demonstrated students' awareness of the importance of writing and their needs to develop the skill of
writing. The study suggests some practical methods in order to cope with writing difficulties.
Introduction
Without a doubt, English language has become the most prominent international language in the world. English is a tool to communicate whether
orally or in writing to understand and express thoughts and ideas.
The four language skills, speaking, listening, reading, and writing are important and necessary for learning the language. But, writing is the most
challenging. When it comes to the teaching and learning of language skills, writing does not pay much attention. While, its importance

Problems and Difficulties of Students
Chapter I THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND Introduction Education is one of the most important factors in our life that every one of us
must have. It serves as the beginning steps in achieving our goals in life, the basic training in facing the world business and experience to bring about
learning. As our parents say, it is the best gift that we can get from them that no one can steal it. Thus, education is our investment to become our dreams
turn to reality. We asstudent have our own dreams. When we are child we have already our dreams just like me. Before, when my parents ask me
what I want to become, I always said with full of energy, full of action like I am driving an airplane and matching sound of "vooomvooom" then

Because, I am also an accountancy student, I know the feeling to be pressured, I know the feeling when sometimes I got failing grades. But I always
remember that I have dreams in life. Just like them, they have also dreams in life that's why they enrolled in accountancy. And I am sure we have
generally the same dream and goal and that is to become certified public accountant in the future. I might think of some possible solutions of the
problem. Those are the reason that's why I chose this topic. The possible solutions that I may give are: Consider the rewards of your education to help
jumpstart your motivation. Did you know there is so much more to earning a college degree than just the financial benefits? In fact, according to
College Board, a college education can lead to a healthier lifestyle, with reduced health care costs for individuals and society. Also, children with
college–educated parents are more likely to be better prepared for school than other children. College is also an outlet for making lifelong connections
with your professors and lasting friendships with fellow students. College students need to realize their limits. The purpose of college is to study and to
further the education of an individual, that doesn't mean students should study all the time. It is important to schedule for fun outside of study, and to
take study breaks to keep the mind fresh and clear. Scholarships of schools are aiming to change the way

Life Is Hard Life Is Difficult Essay
Life is Hard, Life is Difficult
My message today is titled Life is hard" and it's about how to live a great and meaningful life despite the fact that life is difficult.
Everybody wants to be happy in life. We all want to live a perfect life. We want that great job or a successful business. We want to be married to Mr.
Right or Mrs Perfect. We want to have great kids. We want to have friends that stick by us come rain or shine. We want to be able to have all the
good that life has to offer and have all our problems just simply disappear.
Everybody wishes for good life. It may be at different levels. One person may define a good life one way and another may describe their wanted
perfect life in another way. For one person a good life may be just having three meals a day and a roof over their head. For another it may be having a

Not only do you have the responsibility to make it better, you have the ability and the power to make it better.
You can make it better – become a better employee and someone worth giving more responsibilities at work. The promotions and the better pay are
sure to follow one way or another.
You can make it better – learn how to raise better kids and have a happier home. Become the good husband or wife you would like your spouse to be.
You can make it better – learn how to turn that business around. Gain the extra skills you need to run a successful business.
You see, the only person you have any control over is yourself. You cannot change other people. Let's take the example ofmarriage for moment. Notice
that I did not say you should turn your husband or spouse into an ideal spouse. I said you should become the ideal husband or wife you want your
spouse to be. Then, once you become such a person you may have several choices as to how to relate to your

My Struggles with English Composition Essay
My Struggles with English Composition
"...As for all the seniors, I want you to challenge yourselves this year and don't think you're going to cruise through to graduation."–Mrs. Smith, County
High School. Although some seniors in high school refuse to take a hard schedule, I decided to take a challenging composition course my last year
of high school and learned more than ever before from it. My teacher, Mr. Bacz, focused mostly on vocabulary, grammar, and how to right an essay.
Each one of these subjects combined to give me a year of hard work, which eventually paid off.
Since, I have always struggled in English, I thought this class was just going to be another hardship. It's not that I ever got bad grades in English, it's

Along with vocabulary, grammar is another area in which I had problems. For instance, I was still getting confused about proper sentence structure. I
worked on this by completing a 30 page workbook full of different sentences to assist me. From learning verbs to compound–complex sentences the
worksheets covered it all. I was starting to realize this class and Mr. Horbacz were all about fine tuning me for my big transition into college. The
next thing I did was learn how to organize my thoughts onto paper and write an essay. I knew how to write a basic five paragraph essay, but my
skills were limited. These are all things I struggled with at the beginning of the year, but soon I started to grow in each area.
After the first couple of months, improvements in my school work were beginning to show, and I liked it. My vocabulary abilities were revealing
themselves as well. For example, when I would read homework in other classes the words that would sometimes confuse me began to make sense. I
would also listen to other people's conversations on the street and it seemed as if the vocabulary words that I had just studied the week before, could be
heard. It was the weirdest thing. Likewise, my grammar was developing nicely. For instance, when I would read books I could see the different ways
sentences were portrayed. Things that I never picked up before were coming to me so much easier. This class that

Challenges That I Face As Writer Essay
As a writer there are many elements of writing that I struggle with, especially when composing an essay. When writing an essay, there are usually
many skills that need to be used in order to be successful with the writing assignment. Many times in writing I struggle with explaining and fully
developing the supporting details and ideas in my essay. I would also like to improve on incorporating clear topic sentences and concluding sentences,
connecting my paragraphs ideas back to my thesis. Lastly, improvement can be made in my writing by avoiding awkward or wordy sentences. Writers
face numerous challenges in their writing but strive to overcome or improve these challenges with each piece they write. Writers often face certain

I am looking to improve on this challenge as a writer by focusing on explaining my quotes and explanations in a more supportive way that relates
back to the thesis. Writing can be improved upon endlessly by minimizing your challenges as a writer. In writing an essay I also struggle with
incorporating clear topic sentences and connecting my paragraphs ideas back to my thesis statement. This struggle is based on last years'
experience with writing essays. This struggle can be improved upon by concentrating on what exactly my thesis is stating and building my
sentences to relate and explain the thesis further. Improving on this will allow my writing ability to increase and help me become a more
successful writer. When composing an essay, or journal entry, or just plain writing, I struggle as a writer with avoiding awkward or wordy phases in
my written work. This struggle is yet again based on last year's experience and feedback from my English class. Improvement with this struggle can
be made by the following strategies: reading over my paper more carefully, avoiding the use of words that sound intelligent but don't flow with the
paper, and editing my paper with peers. Recognizing this struggle and following these strategies would improve my writing. Writers develop strategies
that help them to overcome or improve upon their struggles and challenges in their writing. As a

"THE DIFFICULTIES IN LEARNING LISTENING SKILL OF NON–ENGLISH MAJOR LEARNER AND HOW TO DEAL WITH THESE
DIFFICULTIES". 1.1. Listening Skill: Many language learners consider listening ability the measure of knowing a language. As for them, fluency is
the ability to converse with others much more than the ability to read, write or comprehend oral language. They regard listening as the most important
skill they can acquire. Therefore, if learners do not learn how to listen or do not get any opportunities to listening in the language classroom, they may
soon get de–motivated and lose interest in learning other skills. 1.2. Concepts of Listening: According to Howatt and Dakin (1974), listening is the

Lack of Vocabulary: One problem that students encounter in listening comes from their insufficiency of vocabulary. Due to lack of practicing in
listening, they are slow to respond to some of the words in listening. When listening they have to stop to think as they meet new words and then they
will miss the next information. "If students do not know the meaning of many of the words that they will encounter in a text, their comprehension of
that selection is likely to be compromised". (John & Shane, 2004:4). Rivers (1983:125) in Nunan (1999:117) has also argued that the acquisition
of an adequate vocabulary is essential for successful second language use because, without an extensive vocabulary, we will be unable to use the
structure and functions we may have learned for comprehensible communication. During the lesson, students use their own vocabulary and introduced
to new words provided by the teachers and classmates. A number of students tried to look up words in bilingual dictionary to find their meanings or
definitions when they encounter new words. Moreover, some students may require teachers to give meaning and grammatical function for words that
they do not know. Even though students realize the importance of vocabulary when learning listening, most of them learn vocabulary passively. They
may even write down new words without any idea of real use of them in context. 2.1.2. Lack of background knowledge: Through my

Essay on Writing Experience
My Writing Experiences My experiences in writing have been minimal. I have only learned the basics of writing, like putting together sentences,
forming paragraphs with sentences, and things like that. Since I have been taking college English, I can tell my writing has improved a lot. In the
future, I hope to be able to improve tremendously at writing essays, paragraphs, research papers, documents, and stories so that I have very little to no
errors with drafting and final products. I predict I will be a well rounded writer when I graduate from college. Writing in the past started in
kindergarten. My teacher taught me how to write my name over and over until I could write it with no errors. All through elementary my teachers

I need to learn to quit thinking as much on what I want to write about and how to write about a topic and just starting jotting stuff down in outline form
as it comes to mind. Run–ons and fragments I need to be able to spot and fix right away or I really need to not have any in my papers at all. My
goals are to write papers and not have to reassure myself that maybe I need to do more research or have more data or even have to rethink my
whole topic over. I would love to have the knowledge to be a tutor someday and teach other people how to properly write papers, paragraphs,
essays, and maybe even books. To have excellent skills in writing will definitely be a great advantage in my nursing profession. In nursing, I will
have to do lots of charting on my patients. I will have to do health presentations on various subjects such as exercising, how our society eats, and
sex education if I want to be a course instructor. Researching information on all of those topics I will have to make sure I do an excellent job on and
collect accurate information and statistics so that I can compare to other sources. Dictating to the doctor means that I will need to write properly so
that he understands what I am saying. Other nurses will have to be able to understand what I am talking about by my writing skills when doing shift
changes. I will have to be very precise so that other nurses will not

Speaking Difficulties of Students
INTRODUCTION The fact that English is one of the most important keys that open the road of success in every area of life and it is the only
language that truly links the world together can not be denied by anyone. That is why today English is taught as a foreign language in most of the
countries and new research is being conducted for better learning and teaching in E.L.T. every day. However, there is no doubt that learning another
language is challenging, especially if you do not live in the country where the language is in daily use and you are not exposed to it on a daily basis.
Hence, there are some complaints from both students and teachers. No matter how much they understand the lesson, students claim that they can

Difficulty Writing an essay at Tertiary Level
Writing an essay at Tertiary level is an extremely difficult process.
Introduction
The ability to write a quality piece of writing at the tertiary level is a procedure that does not come easily. As mentioned in Marshall and Rowland
(2006, p.195).the complexity of developing a style of writing that is personal and academic while processing and developing thoughts and concepts
into a presentable piece of academic writing can be a daunting process ( myself included ).
This essay will discuss some of the barriers a student may experience during their writing experience. The development of research and reading skills in
their approach to learning and difficulties a student may experience due to procrastination and consequently...show more content...
Therefore the writing of an essay, although difficult, is a process that is of benefit to the student as a capstone or finish to their study. As Rowntree
mentions "Writing is the crucial step without which study would be incomplete" (2006, p.65).The writing of an essay is a process where you
communicate your skills and knowledge in the written form.
Physical Hurdles
The written essay is a task that is normally done by the writer away from class. The timeframe is usually adequate provided the student begins in a
timely fashion without procrastinating. When writing at home the immediate environment may have debilitating effects. Orr (1992, p.80). States"To
maximise your output arrange for a quiet and distraction free writing period". This I find is particularly important as I can also relate to this as well as
a quote in Marshall and Rowland (2006, p15). "...in formal learning you are required to concentrate for sustained periods and to study subjects that
aren't of immediate importance to you."
Your physical surroundings are important for producing an atmosphere conducive to effective study and writing. A student who is balancing study and
work with limited control over time may have trouble concentrating on producing a well balanced essay, in comparison to someone who has their own
room, desk and family support. Likewise essay writing can discriminate

The Theory Of Reading Difficulties
An interest in the social constructs of reading difficulties became prevalent in 1878 when the German neurologist Adolph Kussmaul, coined the term
"word blindness". He had a specific attentiveness to adults who had a neurological impairment and had faced reading challenges. He noticed that
many adults who were unable to properly read were frequently observing the words in the wrong order. In 1887, the term "dyslexia" replaced "word
blindness" when a German ophthalmologist used the Greek translation of "difficulty with words". The word dyslexia comes from the Greek root
"dys" which translates to difficult or inadequate, and "lexis" means language. Many people believed that dyslexia was caused by a visual processing
deficiencies. The present...show more content...
Many people incorrectly identify dyslexia as being strictly ADHD, though, diagnosis tends to be more complicated. Knowing if a child is having
difficulties in school due to ADHD, or dyslexia can be a challenge for parents and teachers to recognize. However, ADHD is more commonly known
and diagnosed (AD/HD and Dyslexia). Cnsequently, adults do not take into consideration that it could be dyslexia, or both. ADHD and dyslexia
commonly occur at the same time (Lapkin), hence diagnosing the child can be difficult. Because ADHD and dyslexia are closely related, they manage
to have some of the same symptoms. Symptoms may include "information processing speed issues, working memory deficits, naming speed, motor
skills deficits, and subtle cerebellar abnormalities" (Olivardia).
As a result of dyslexia and ADHD symptoms often overlapping, adults frequently see a diagnosis of a child strictly having only ADHD. A
misdiagnosis of a child with dyslexia will give them the wrong source of help. Many parents who address the issue early on, are met with answers
such as "every student reads differently and their child will catch up" (Olivardia). In many cases, this does not work. A study made by the Understood
team shows that 15 percent of students with dyslexia also have ADHD, and one third of students who already have ADHD are also met with the
challenges of dyslexia (Lapkin). Regardless of the possibility that a child is effectively determined to have dyslexia,

Difficulty With Essays
Trying to write an essay is difficult. Reading a book with the very nicely written essays is great and allows me to see examples of good essays.
Suggestions such as the journalist's questions, mapping, brainstorming, and idea books give support and guidance that are supposed to be helpful.
After reading all the material of what goes into an essay and the helpful suggestions to get me started in the right direction, such as ways to overcome
writer's block, it is time to begin. Still nothing; I just sit there in front of the computer. I ask myself, how can I use all of the useful information that

The words that make sense are gone, hidden away somewhere and requiring an enormous amount of time to pull them out and put something on
paper. The waste of time drives me nuts. In "Reading for Success," by Richard Rodriguez, one reason he found reading to be difficult was because
it made him feel secluded; the words were colorless and lifeless. He began reading just to read, not always understanding what he was reading. To
me, my writing is colorless and lifeless compared to what is in my head. I am writing but not always understanding if what I am putting down on
paper is correct or making sense. Then there is the boredom that comes from trying to think and make sense of it all. In "How I Discovered Words:
A Homemade Education," Malcolm X claimed he felt a certain failure in not having the ability to tell, written or orally, what was in his head. He did
not know many words, so he used the dictionary to learn more. The thesaurus and dictionary have become my best friends when typing papers. With a
limited vocabulary, it can take me quite a while to look up words, to find others that mean the same. The time required to find the right words takes
away from the concentration of getting them down. Finding enough words to fill the page can be and is a

The First And Hardest Part Of Writing An Essay
The first and hardest part of writing an essay is figuring out how to start. A professor may give a topic to be written about, but in some cases that
may not happen. The first step is to pick a topic. The topic will serve as your thesis. You want to pick a topic that you are relatively knowledgeable
about so you are not completely in the dark. By picking a topic that you know even a little about, will take away the anxiety of not knowing where
to start or what to write about. If you chose to challenge yourself and write a paper about something you are novice about, then you want to pick a
topic that is broad enough to find enough information about. For example, if you want to write a paper about cars, do not make cars what your
paper is about, because although it is a broad topic it is also somewhat narrow. Try to broaden your topic buy changing it to, "how cars have changed
our lives." Changing your topic to a more argumentative thesis gives you a pinpoint area to write about and leaves the door open to give you more to
write about. The second step, and what I believe to be the most important step is locating sources to support your thesis. A researchessay without
sources becomes an opinion essay, and that is what you as the writer want to stay away from. Sources make your essay more creditable. If your essay
is about "how technology has benefited students and teachers in the classrooms," then you should find sources that are about how technology is used in

Those structures that are similar will be easy to learn because they will be transferred and may function satisfactorily in the foreign language. Those structures that are different will be difficult because when transferred they will not function satisfactorily in the foreign language and will therefore have to be changed. We can say that the degree of control of these structures that are different is an index to how much of the language a person has learned." Simply put, Filipino learners of English language may find an edge through transferring their knowledge about the Filipino language and applying similar concepts on learning English. Similarly, the difficulties may arise whenever there are concepts applicable in learning Filipino which are, consequently, inapplicable in learning English. And that is the grounds of the conduction of this study. Theoretical / Conceptual Framework There are five components in Second Language Acquisition Theory. • 3. Difficulties In English Pronunciation Q.3: describe the specific difficulties in English pronunciation met by a group of learners known to you. Pronunciation can be defined as the way in which a person sounds the words of a language while speaking. Pronunciation is an aspect of verbal communication which makes it more effective and attractive during communication with others. English is one of the most challenging languages to learn. But it is going to be easier to learn if we already have knowledge of a language that has the same roots. English–language learning is hugely important in most Arabic–speaking countries; people still communicate through speaking more than they do through writing. Therefore we must pay attention to pronunciation, as it contributes to conveying the right message in an oral way. Arabic and English phonological system, are very different, not only in sound but also in the emphasis placed on vowels and constant in expressing meaning. I have been teaching English for more than 10 years. Sometimes I find that it is difficult for Arabic speaker students to pronounce very simple words, even after years of learning English. English pronunciation rules are very simple but the learners should be aware of the rules and how to stress on letters during conversations to have clear speech. The difficulties in English pronunciation arise amongst EFL Arab students from the fact that the sound systems of Arabic and English are different in many aspects. For all these reasons Arab speakers might Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Life's Problems Essay Life's Problems Life is full of problems, but how we approach those problems often determines whether we're happy or miserable. Bob Maynard says, "Problems are opportunities in disguise." If we approach problems with Maynard's attitude, we see that problems are really opportunities to learn about others and ourselves. They enable us to live happier and more fulfilling lives. Maynard's quote applies to all kinds of problems. I faced a problem just last week when our family's kitchen sink developed a serious leak. There was water all over our kitchen floor and piles of dishes to be washed. But our landlord was out of town for the week. I come from a big family–I have six brothers and sisters–so we couldn't afford to wait until...show more content... Whatever kind of situation we face, problems give us the chance to learn and grow, both physically and mentally. For example, when I had a problem with my car and couldn't the repairs right away, my problem become an opportunity to get some exercise–something I'd been waiting to do anyway. I had to walk a mile each day to get to the bus stop and back. But in the meantime, I got the chance to start getting back in shape, and I saved a lot on gas. I've come to realize that problems are really part of what makes life worth living. Problems challenge us and give us the opportunity to do things we've never done before, to learn things we never knew before. They give us the chance to surprise ourselves. Just the word "problem" can send some of us into a panic. But problems can be good things, too. Problems are situations that make us think and force us to be creative and resourceful. They can also teach us things we didn't know before. For example, I had a problem in school a few years ago when I couldn't understand my math class. I started failing my quizzes and homework assignments. I wasn't sure what to so, so finally I went to the teacher and asked for help. She said she would arrange for me to be tutored by another student who was her best student. In return, though, I'd have to help that student around school. I wasn't sure what she Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Difficulties in Learning English Grammar International Journal of Instruction e–ISSN: 1308–1470 в—Џ www.e–iji.net July 2011 в—Џ Vol.4, No.2 p–ISSN: 1694–609X DIFFICULTIES IN TEACHING AND LEARNING GRAMMAR IN AN EFL CONTEXT1 Abdu Mohammed Al –Mekhlafi PhD., College of Education, Sultan Qaboos University, Oman rayan3@gmail.com Ramani Perur Nagaratnam PhD., Ministry of Manpower, Oman The role of grammar instruction in an ESL/EFL context has been for decades a major issue for students and teachers alike. Researchers have debated whether grammar should be taught in the classroom and students, for their part, have generally looked upon grammar instruction as a necessary evil at best, and an avoidable burden at worst. The paper reports a study undertaken to investigate the difficulties...show more content... For many L2 learners, learning grammar often means learning the rules of grammar and having an intellectual knowledge of grammar. Teachers often believe that this will provide the generative basis on which learners can build their knowledge and will be able to use the language eventually. For them, prescribed rules give a kind of security. International Journal of Instruction, July 2011 в—Џ Vol.4, No.2 Al–Mekhlafi & Nagaratnam 71 A better approach is perhaps to see grammar as one of many resources that we have in language which helps us to communicate. We should see how grammar relates to what we want to say or write, and how we expect others to interpret what our language use and its focus. According to Widdowson (1990: 86), " . . . grammar is not a constraining imposition but a liberating force: it frees us from a dependency on context and a purely lexical categorization of reality." Given that many learners – and teachers – tend to view grammar as a set of restrictions on what is allowed and disallowed in language use – 'a linguistic straitjacket' in Larsen–Freeman's words (2002: 103) – the conception of grammar as something that liberates rather than represses is one that is worth investigating. According to Morelli (2003), students perceived themselves as having a better attitude towards grammar instruction in context, while Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. The Difficulties And Challenges Facing Students Abstract Writing has always been regarded as playing a prominent role in learning a second language. The purpose of this research was to investigate the difficulties and challenges facing students in writing and spelling, the factors causing these difficulties and how to overcome these challenges. A total of 30 female students from three different female secondary schools in the Al–Kharj city participated in the study, and 6 teachers teaching English language for secondary levels with different teaching experiences. Questionnaires were used to gather information from the participants. The overall results demonstrated the students' negative views towards writing. The findings revealed that students have problems in writing, especially in language use (grammar). The major findings demonstrated students' awareness of the importance of writing and their needs to develop the skill of writing. The study suggests some practical methods in order to cope with writing difficulties. Introduction Without a doubt, English language has become the most prominent international language in the world. English is a tool to communicate whether orally or in writing to understand and express thoughts and ideas. The four language skills, speaking, listening, reading, and writing are important and necessary for learning the language. As our parents say, it is the best gift that we can get from them that no one can steal it. Thus, education is our investment to become our dreams turn to reality. We asstudent have our own dreams. Just like them, they have also dreams in life that's why they enrolled in accountancy. And I am sure we have generally the same dream and goal and that is to become certified public accountant in the future. I might think of some possible solutions of the problem. Those are the reason that's why I chose this topic. The possible solutions that I may give are: Consider the rewards of your education to help jumpstart your motivation. Did you know there is so much more to earning a college degree than just the financial benefits? In fact, according to College Board, a college education can lead to a healthier lifestyle, with reduced health care costs for individuals and society. Also, children with college–educated parents are more likely to be better prepared for school than other children. College is also an outlet for making lifelong connections with your professors and lasting friendships with fellow students. College students need to realize their limits. The purpose of college is to study and to further the education of an individual, that doesn't mean students should study all the time. It is important to schedule for fun outside of study, and to take study breaks to keep the mind fresh and clear. My Struggles with English Composition Essay My Struggles with English Composition "...As for all the seniors, I want you to challenge yourselves this year and don't think you're going to cruise through to graduation."–Mrs. Smith, County High School. Although some seniors in high school refuse to take a hard schedule, I decided to take a challenging composition course my last year of high school and learned more than ever before from it. My teacher, Mr. Bacz, focused mostly on vocabulary, grammar, and how to right an essay. Each one of these subjects combined to give me a year of hard work, which eventually paid off. Since, I have always struggled in English, I thought this class was just going to be another hardship. It's not that I ever got bad grades in English, it's ...show more content... Along with vocabulary, grammar is another area in which I had problems. For instance, I was still getting confused about proper sentence structure. I worked on this by completing a 30 page workbook full of different sentences to assist me. From learning verbs to compound–complex sentences the worksheets covered it all. I was starting to realize this class and Mr. Horbacz were all about fine tuning me for my big transition into college. The next thing I did was learn how to organize my thoughts onto paper and write an essay. I knew how to write a basic five paragraph essay, but my skills were limited. These are all things I struggled with at the beginning of the year, but soon I started to grow in each area. After the first couple of months, improvements in my school work were beginning to show, and I liked it. My vocabulary abilities were revealing themselves as well. For example, when I would read homework in other classes the words that would sometimes confuse me began to make sense. I would also listen to other people's conversations on the street and it seemed as if the vocabulary words that I had just studied the week before, could be heard. It was the weirdest thing. Likewise, my grammar was developing nicely. For instance, when I would read books I could see the different ways sentences were portrayed. Things that I never picked up before were coming to me so much easier. This class that Get more content on HelpWriting.net

When writing an essay, there are usually many skills that need to be used in order to be successful with the writing assignment. Many times in writing I struggle with explaining and fully developing the supporting details and ideas in my essay. I would also like to improve on incorporating clear topic sentences and concluding sentences, connecting my paragraphs ideas back to my thesis. Lastly, improvement can be made in my writing by avoiding awkward or wordy sentences. I am looking to improve on this challenge as a writer by focusing on explaining my quotes and explanations in a more supportive way that relates back to the thesis. Writing can be improved upon endlessly by minimizing your challenges as a writer. In writing an essay I also struggle with incorporating clear topic sentences and connecting my paragraphs ideas back to my thesis statement. This struggle is based on last years' experience with writing essays. This struggle can be improved upon by concentrating on what exactly my thesis is stating and building my sentences to relate and explain the thesis further. Improving on this will allow my writing ability to increase and help me become a more successful writer. When composing an essay, or journal entry, or just plain writing, I struggle as a writer with avoiding awkward or wordy phases in my written work. This struggle is yet again based on last year's experience and feedback from my English class. Improvement with this struggle can be made by the following strategies: reading over my paper more carefully, avoiding the use of words that sound intelligent but don't flow with the paper, and editing my paper with peers. Recognizing this struggle and following these strategies would improve my writing. Listening Skill: Many language learners consider listening ability the measure of knowing a language. As for them, fluency is the ability to converse with others much more than the ability to read, write or comprehend oral language. They regard listening as the most important skill they can acquire. Therefore, if learners do not learn how to listen or do not get any opportunities to listening in the language classroom, they may soon get de–motivated and lose interest in learning other skills. 1.2. Lack of Vocabulary: One problem that students encounter in listening comes from their insufficiency of vocabulary. Due to lack of practicing in listening, they are slow to respond to some of the words in listening. When listening they have to stop to think as they meet new words and then they will miss the next information. "If students do not know the meaning of many of the words that they will encounter in a text, their comprehension of that selection is likely to be compromised". (John & Shane, 2004:4). Rivers (1983:125) in Nunan (1999:117) has also argued that the acquisition of an adequate vocabulary is essential for successful second language use because, without an extensive vocabulary, we will be unable to use the structure and functions we may have learned for comprehensible communication. During the lesson, students use their own vocabulary and introduced to new words provided by the teachers and classmates. A number of students tried to look up words in bilingual dictionary to find their meanings or definitions when they encounter new words. Moreover, some students may require teachers to give meaning and grammatical function for words that they do not know. Even though students realize the importance of vocabulary when learning listening, most of them learn vocabulary passively. They may even write down new words without any idea of real use of them in context. 2.1.2. Lack of background knowledge: Through my Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. Essay on Writing Experience My Writing Experiences My experiences in writing have been minimal. I have only learned the basics of writing, like putting together sentences, forming paragraphs with sentences, and things like that. Since I have been taking college English, I can tell my writing has improved a lot. In the future, I hope to be able to improve tremendously at writing essays, paragraphs, research papers, documents, and stories so that I have very little to no errors with drafting and final products. I predict I will be a well rounded writer when I graduate from college. Writing in the past started in kindergarten. My teacher taught me how to write my name over and over until I could write it with no errors. All through elementary my teachers taught me...show more content... My goals are to write papers and not have to reassure myself that maybe I need to do more research or have more data or even have to rethink my whole topic over. I would love to have the knowledge to be a tutor someday and teach other people how to properly write papers, paragraphs, essays, and maybe even books. To have excellent skills in writing will definitely be a great advantage in my nursing profession. In nursing, I will have to do lots of charting on my patients. I will have to do health presentations on various subjects such as exercising, how our society eats, and sex education if I want to be a course instructor. Researching information on all of those topics I will have to make sure I do an excellent job on and collect accurate information and statistics so that I can compare to other sources. Dictating to the doctor means that I will need to write properly so that he understands what I am saying. Other nurses will have to be able to understand what I am talking about by my writing skills when doing shift changes. I will have to be very precise so that other nurses will not Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 14. Difficulty Writing an essay at Tertiary Level Writing an essay at Tertiary level is an extremely difficult process. Introduction The ability to write a quality piece of writing at the tertiary level is a procedure that does not come easily. As mentioned in Marshall and Rowland (2006, p.195).the complexity of developing a style of writing that is personal and academic while processing and developing thoughts and concepts into a presentable piece of academic writing can be a daunting process ( myself included ). This essay will discuss some of the barriers a student may experience during their writing experience. Therefore the writing of an essay, although difficult, is a process that is of benefit to the student as a capstone or finish to their study. As Rowntree mentions "Writing is the crucial step without which study would be incomplete" (2006, p.65).The writing of an essay is a process where you communicate your skills and knowledge in the written form. Physical Hurdles The written essay is a task that is normally done by the writer away from class. The timeframe is usually adequate provided the student begins in a timely fashion without procrastinating. When writing at home the immediate environment may have debilitating effects. Orr (1992, p.80). States"To maximise your output arrange for a quiet and distraction free writing period". This I find is particularly important as I can also relate to this as well as a quote in Marshall and Rowland (2006, p15). "...in formal learning you are required to concentrate for sustained periods and to study subjects that aren't of immediate importance to you." Your physical surroundings are important for producing an atmosphere conducive to effective study and writing. A student who is balancing study and work with limited control over time may have trouble concentrating on producing a well balanced essay, in comparison to someone who has their own room, desk and family support. • 15. The Theory Of Reading Difficulties An interest in the social constructs of reading difficulties became prevalent in 1878 when the German neurologist Adolph Kussmaul, coined the term "word blindness". He had a specific attentiveness to adults who had a neurological impairment and had faced reading challenges. He noticed that many adults who were unable to properly read were frequently observing the words in the wrong order. In 1887, the term "dyslexia" replaced "word blindness" when a German ophthalmologist used the Greek translation of "difficulty with words". The word dyslexia comes from the Greek root "dys" which translates to difficult or inadequate, and "lexis" means language. Many people believed that dyslexia was caused by a visual processing deficiencies. The present...show more content... Many people incorrectly identify dyslexia as being strictly ADHD, though, diagnosis tends to be more complicated. Knowing if a child is having difficulties in school due to ADHD, or dyslexia can be a challenge for parents and teachers to recognize. However, ADHD is more commonly known and diagnosed (AD/HD and Dyslexia). Cnsequently, adults do not take into consideration that it could be dyslexia, or both. ADHD and dyslexia commonly occur at the same time (Lapkin), hence diagnosing the child can be difficult. Because ADHD and dyslexia are closely related, they manage to have some of the same symptoms. Symptoms may include "information processing speed issues, working memory deficits, naming speed, motor skills deficits, and subtle cerebellar abnormalities" (Olivardia). As a result of dyslexia and ADHD symptoms often overlapping, adults frequently see a diagnosis of a child strictly having only ADHD. A misdiagnosis of a child with dyslexia will give them the wrong source of help. Many parents who address the issue early on, are met with answers such as "every student reads differently and their child will catch up" (Olivardia). In many cases, this does not work. A study made by the Understood team shows that 15 percent of students with dyslexia also have ADHD, and one third of students who already have ADHD are also met with the challenges of dyslexia (Lapkin). Regardless of the possibility that a child is effectively determined to have dyslexia, Get more content on HelpWriting.net

After reading all the material of what goes into an essay and the helpful suggestions to get me started in the right direction, such as ways to overcome writer's block, it is time to begin. The words that make sense are gone, hidden away somewhere and requiring an enormous amount of time to pull them out and put something on paper. The waste of time drives me nuts. In "Reading for Success," by Richard Rodriguez, one reason he found reading to be difficult was because it made him feel secluded; the words were colorless and lifeless. He began reading just to read, not always understanding what he was reading. To me, my writing is colorless and lifeless compared to what is in my head. I am writing but not always understanding if what I am putting down on paper is correct or making sense. Then there is the boredom that comes from trying to think and make sense of it all. In "How I Discovered Words: A Homemade Education," Malcolm X claimed he felt a certain failure in not having the ability to tell, written or orally, what was in his head. He did not know many words, so he used the dictionary to learn more. The thesaurus and dictionary have become my best friends when typing papers. • 18. The First And Hardest Part Of Writing An Essay The first and hardest part of writing an essay is figuring out how to start. A professor may give a topic to be written about, but in some cases that may not happen. The first step is to pick a topic. The topic will serve as your thesis. You want to pick a topic that you are relatively knowledgeable about so you are not completely in the dark. By picking a topic that you know even a little about, will take away the anxiety of not knowing where to start or what to write about. If you chose to challenge yourself and write a paper about something you are novice about, then you want to pick a topic that is broad enough to find enough information about. For example, if you want to write a paper about cars, do not make cars what your paper is about, because although it is a broad topic it is also somewhat narrow. Try to broaden your topic buy changing it to, "how cars have changed our lives." Changing your topic to a more argumentative thesis gives you a pinpoint area to write about and leaves the door open to give you more to write about. The second step, and what I believe to be the most important step is locating sources to support your thesis. A researchessay without sources becomes an opinion essay, and that is what you as the writer want to stay away from. Sources make your essay more creditable. If your essay is about "how technology has benefited students and teachers in the classrooms," then you should find sources that are about how technology is used in Get more content on HelpWriting.net
