The Giver Response Essay
The Giver, a young adult fiction novel written by Lois Lowry, tells a story about Jonas, a curious boy trapped in a futuristic society full of contentment,
rules, and the elimination of emotions such as fear, hatred, etc. When he begins to see The Giver, an old man who holds all of the past memories of the
community, Jonas realizes a dangerous past and becomes the first to begin on a journey to escape the community to protect his loved ones and
himself. I feel that this book has a lot of depth and emotion that blends together with Lowry's great literature, making it special. The book does have
a few minor flaws, yet it doesn't fail to impress as it makes readers think deeply about life and what you make out of it. Here are the reasons why I
recommend this book....show more content...
In the book, the people of Jonas's community does not experience emotions from the absence of certain memories that the officials decided to
eliminate. This hinders the people of the community to feel any suffering in human history as well as the desire to engage in activities or relationships
that could result in disorder or pain. Jonas is chosen to receive these hidden memories by The Giver to discover that the world he lives in is only the
first layer to what is under beneath. The fact that the author made the storyline on how Jonas discovers these memories makes me cherish my own
and how I am grateful for all that I have. Furthermore, the book includes many elusive lessons and forms of symbolism that are able to be applied
in real life. For example, one of the first memories that Jonas receives is a sled ride. The sled is the color red, which symbolizes the newly rich and
vivid feelings and experiences that Jonas goes through. The sled ride is exhilarating, yet painful as he falls hard in a different sled ride memory. This
refers to the difference between pain and pleasure that we all experience in

Have you ever want too many things even though your life was already fulfilled and lost yourself? Have you ever ask too much and regret for
what you did? Every desire, ambition, selfishness and a bit of extravagant of a human being was carefully portrayed in this story, "The Necklace".
The story is about a young woman named Mathilde Loisel. Born in a family of artisans, she wasn't rich, but beautiful and glamor. But she never feel
satisfied of what she had and never stop dreaming to have more, to live a luxury life with expensive homes and glittering dresses, and eventually paid
hard for her nonsense dreams. In "The Necklace", Guy de Maupassant uses third person limited narration to show how Mathilde Loisel changes in how

When her husband gave her the invitation to the ball, which was a perfect place to meet the rich people, Mathilde got mad and cried. It was a
shame since she has nothing to wear. Mr Loisel gave his money to Mathilde and she got an elegance dress. But she didn't stop and wanted to have
jewels. Mathilde met her friend, Madame Forestier and chose an gorgeous diamond necklace. Of course, she became the prettiest woman in the
ball, with everyone stared at her, as if she was the most attractive woman ever. She felt fascinated, just like her dream came true. But then a tragic
came to her. She lost the necklace! Mathilde and her husband tried to find the necklace, but they found nothing. Mathilde lost her hope and had
aged five years. The Loisels finally decided to replace the diamonds for 36 000 Francs, spent all of their money and accepted to pay the debts. It was
such an unfortunate situation. After Mathilde lost the necklace, she was described as " And, clad like a poor woman, she went to the fruiterer, to the
grocer, to the butcher, a basket on her arm, haggling, insulted, fighting for every wretched halfpenny of her money". (Maupassant 8). The family was
suffering from poverty and have to pay the debts continuously. Mathilde changed immediately and did everything. They have worked so hard to earn
every single penny for their life, to survive and pay all those debts. The third person limited

Examples Of Literary Criticism Of Hamlet
After reading your chosen essay of literary criticism, respond to the following questions:
1) What was your author's thesis?
Loberg's starts her essay by informing the reader that physical violence is the most infrequent form of aggression and that people prefer alternatives
that give bigger effect and less punishment. Her thesis implies that Hamlet shows a great amount of examples of how humans psychologically treat
each other. Characters spread aggression in non physical violent ways such as spreading lies, framing others and etc. Opening to the thought that the
Queen was not seen as a suspect to Ophelia's death because she did not use physical violence.

6) What did this particular perspective add to your understanding of Hamlet?
I found this essay to be very intriguing and it definitely changed my perspective on Queen Gertrude, it made me want to pay more attention to hints in
reading and makes me want to think more in depth. If I never read this essay I would have never thought that Gertrude could have been involved in
Ophelia's death.
7) Did you notice anything about the way in which this essay was written that seems to contradict essay "rules" you have been taught in the past? If so,

I realized that the author did not order her information from first events to the end events but a quite random order, which is something I've never done
because I believe it is just common sense to order information chronologically which I found surprising that the author would do that, she still managed
to get her points across and have me understand but I think it would have been more efficient if the author had her information in chronological

What is Literature?
Poems, novels, and stories; these are some of the things that first came to my mind upon pondering on the question 'What is Literature?'. And just
lately I have known that literature also includes songs, speeches, plays, and many others in written and spoken forms. I have also known that things
that are produced out of creative imagination can be referred as literary works which are the ones that comprise literature. Considering this description
of what literature is, the coverage of literature seems very puzzling. If literary works are those produced out of creative imagining, then it would
directly point to fictional works. But then, there are also...show more content...
Take for example the views of two individuals coming from different places on anovel based on the culture of one. It would likely be the same if their
culture and beliefs are quiet related but if not, then they would surely have different understandings on certain parts of that novel. Hence, defining
literature as those considered by people as 'literature' is questionable.
Eagleton also associated literature as any kind of works which are valued highly by people. But then again, since people may have different
perceptions on things, one may value highly a certain work while another person may consider it just as a plain writing. As stated by Ms. Pinzon, a
literature professor, a personal letter can be an example of this. The recipient of the letter can be expected to really value the letter while her classmate
may not. Hence, this can't define literature as a whole.
Then, what really is literature? Many great critics have tried formulating a fixed definition of literature but have failed to do so. In the rise of every
possible definition of what literature is, counter arguments also rise.
Literature, though it seems impossible to enumerate everything it covers, play an important role in every individual's life. One can influence using
literature or be influenced by it. Examples of these are the novels made by our very own national hero, Jose Rizal – the Noli Me Tangeri and El
Filibusterismo. During his time, Rizal has

Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl
Response
The Diary of a Young Girl written by Anne Frank is an inspirational coming of age diary written to teach the reader that difficult situations lead to
maturity. Anne's diary shows the evolution and maturity of Anne's character over a few years. Anne had to face many challenges in her difficult
situation. She was hiding in a confined Annexe because she was a targeted victim of genocide during the Holocaust. These situations led her to an
entire new level of maturity.
The diary also teaches the reader that life is a gift worth appreciating. The Diary of a Young Girlshows how Anne constantly kept a certain amount of
optimism and was grateful to be alive. She knew the conditions could have been...show more content...
The becoming more responsible and facing new difficulties can lead to maturity. Another example would be when someone moves out of his or her
house. Without preparation, it takes a lot of maturity to clean, cook, and complete all of the everyday tasks of life. These situations are examples of
big steps in a person's life. These situations both lead to more responsibility. If that responsibility is accepted, then that is a huge step of maturity
because a person is accepting the challenges that will come. These situations are similar to the way Anne matured in the Annexe. She had to
preparation and did not necessarily know what to expect. Anne's situation was a personal rite of passage, where she chose to grow up and take as
much from her experiences as possible.
The story is written in a diary format. As a diary is on a day–to–day basis, it is able to emphasize that her living situation is constantly being
threatened. Diaries are also arranged by date, so we are able to really see her constant changes from beginning to end. Diaries are meant for discrete
information, so the readers can be sure that it is the truth and connect to her thought and feelings. The diary itself in many ways led to her maturity. In
the Secret Annexe, when Anne felt isolated and distant from her family, she often felt like she could confess her feelings and thoughts to her diary,
because she will not receive judgment in return. This helped

Response To 'Where The Red Fern Grows'
Dear Bismarck Public Schools, May 24th 2016 I'm a student at WMS, I honestly enjoyed the book Where the Red Fern Grows. I know some
people may have thought differently about this, but it affects everyone differently. I'd like to tell you about my opinion about this book and what
others might have thought about this book. Some people may have thought that this was the best book they ever read. To me it wasn't a bad book,
but I thought it was a bit boring and below my reading level. I like more of horror books and with a lot of suspense. I know, I know, everyone doesn't
like those books, but I think you could of done a Survey on what kind of books people like and decide on what book to read according to the class or

The Scarlet Letter Chapter 9-15 Analysis
In chapters 9–15 of The Scarlet Letter, the author decides to dedicate an entire chapter to each character. For example, on chapter 9, the chapter is
dedicated to what happens with Roger. Roger becomes friends with Arthur Dimmesdale in chapter 9. Dimmesdale is sick, and he thinks Roger is kind
and suspects nothing. But Roger, who is Arthur's personal physician, begins to suspect that Dimmesdale is hiding something from him. At this part of
the book, we don't know what the author plans for Dimmesdale to hide, if he even is hiding anything at all. Soon enough, in chapter 10, Roger thinks
that Dimmesdale is Pearl's father, from the fact that Dimmesdale begins to speak of his "daughter" and quickly stops. This leaves Roger wondering

Emotional Response Essay
WEEK TWO I had not considered emotional history to a great extent before the seminar, instead focusing on the 'everyday' aspect of infant mortality
(IM). Dyhouse and Newton's articles presented questions, including why concern over IM grew, and why males were stoic rather than expressing
emotion; something I had not acknowledged as part of Victorian mannerism, attributing it to the patriarchies of the postmodern world. Questioning
whether the sources used by Newton portrayed true emotions or were merely presentations of such expanded my understanding, and presented further
questions. Can we truly understand past emotions when all we have is a representation and cannot experience them the same way? I suggested that we
can merely interpret the presentation of emotion, not the true emotions of the past, however, I now acknowledge that there is something of a perpetual
emotional response (PER) to the death of infants, and that we are able to interpret the past's emotions through this understanding....show more content...

perception of IM after the seminar. With no experience of it myself, I was unable to determine whether a PER was entirely accurate, although I turned
to examples I knew of. This brought my attention back to AriГЁs' 'attitudes to death' and the changes in death's perception between the Victorian period

Response To Macbeth
We all experience a moment in life where there was an urge of wanting something that you couldn't get easily, for a kid purchasing an iPhone 7s plus
for the price of $1049 plus tax. Possibly even try to personate a role that someone is already in, like co–captain of the basketball team wanting to take
the head of the captain place on the team. Some would take drastic measures into ensuring that they get what they want and are satisfy with themselves.
At that moment the only thought running through a person mind could be what is the possible outcome of you taking the easy and fast lane to get
what you want? However, the ending result can leave a person feeling culpable for their action. In this generation we live in earning and accomplishing

Fahrenheit 451 Literary Response
Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 takes place in the 24th century, as "The Heart and the Salamander" introduces a futuristic new society, where mass
media, overpopulation, and immense censorship has taken over. In this society, intelligence is considered fugitive action, books are illegal to own due
to their provoking philosophy, and firemen ironically produce fires instead of preventing them. This is told through the perception of the story's
protagonist, Guy Montag, during his hectic and enlightening period of life.
The story beings with Montag, a fireman who destroys books for his livelihood, meets a beaming young lady named Clarisse McClellan. She introduces
herself, converses with him, and questions things Montag has never considered...show more content...
During his last conversation with her, he learned that she is afraid of violence from her peers, and how her uncle mentions that the world is
unrecognizable today compared to how it was in his time. It was a world where paintings contained actual people, and important conversations
were made. One day, the fire station receives a phone call stating that there is an old lady who has books stacked in her home. The firemen begin
destroying immediately upon arriving. Montag realizes the inhumane treatment towards the old lady and begs her to leave the house before getting
seriously injured. She leaves him to confound after letting him know that she will never leave her beloved books. Montag manages to take a book,
before the house, books, and the lady is left to burn. That night, he tries to tell Mildred about the incident, yet she is still uninterested in what he
says. However, she tells him that Clarisse passed away in a car accident, as he is always curious about her. Montag called in sick the next day and is
surprised with a visit from Beatty. Beatty strangely knows that he has taken a book, and is curious to read it. Beatty makes a great effort to reassure
him that every fireman has a phase of curiosity, and warns him that books must be returned after twenty–four hours if taken in hand to be properly
destroyed.
After Beatty left, Montag tells Mildred that he has been hiding more than one book, and attempts to make her understand why he reads them.

There are many significant symbols used to represent the different themes in To Kill a Mockingbird. Throughout the book Harper Lee transmits a
message to the reader using examples and symbols to get her point across. Some of these symbols include the dresses, Tim Johnson, and dependencies.
The symbol that best represents the theme of growing up would be clothing. Throughout the book, clothing has been more than just a choice of style; it
had been a sign of maturity. Another instance would be when Miss Maudie asks Scout, "'Where are your britches today?'" Scout answers back, "Under
my dress." (Lee 309) This shows that Scout has finally learned to accept the...show more content...

when you think its about to die out, there is still more out there. Aside from clothes and Tim, deceptive appearance is also an important theme
symbolized by people's different dependencies. Although the weakness may look like one thing, it might actually mean another. For example:
'"secretly Miss Finch, I'm not much of a drinker, but you see they could never, never understand that I live the way I do because that's the way I want
to live."' (Lee 268) Dolphus Raymond's "apparent" weakness/dependency seem to be an addiction to spirits. But as we take a closer look he reveals to
us that his so called addiction is only a cover up so people would spare the time to try and figure out his motives. "His left arm was fully 12 inches
shorter than his right, and hung dead at his side."' (Lee 248) Tom's state implies that he committed the crime and looks as if he is guilty, but his
dependency being his left arm proves that he couldn't have done the crime. "Mrs Dubose was a morphine addict, she took pain–killers for years...she
was going to leave this world holden to nothing and nobody."' Hearing this from Atticus jem realizes, "You mean that's what her fits were?" (Lee 147
and 148) Jem has always seen Mrs. Dubose as a horrible old lady with a bitter tongue. But as he looks past the deceptive

Response To Literature
Roland Barthes once said "Literature is the question minus the answer." This means that there is no real answer to literature, there are just the
questions. This is designed so you can incorporate and have different ideas about literature instead of there being a definite answer to what everything
means. Shakespeare for example uses a certain language and his writings require you to think about what's happening and why he worded it the way
he did. Other books such as the Invisible Man has a different meaning to the quote. At first I thought that this quote was referring to racism, but it was
so much more than that. This quote is saying that there is no answer to life. There are just a bunch of questions followed by decisions but there is no

invisible man was able to overcome his past with shock therapy in the hospital and he didn't listen to his grandfather when he constantly doubted the

Essay about Reader-Response vs. New Criticism
New Criticism vs. Reader–Response A piece of work can be evaluated in plenty of ways. Critique methods such as Reader–Response, Deconstructive
Criticism, New Criticism, and many others act as examples of literary evaluations. All of the critique methods share similarities, but differ in other
ways. Reader–Response and New Criticism, for example, share characteristics but they are also two very opposing things. Reader–Response focuses on
attention towards the text influenced by the reader's thoughts. New Criticism aims towards the text with no influence, but the text alone. The two
methods share the same features such as excluding the author's intentions and recognizing details from the texts, and they also contrast by having a

The criticism encourages the reader to explore his thoughts while reading a text. A person may read something over and over again and interpret a
different meaning every time. For Reader–Response, the type of focuses required comes from the reader. Personal experiences and opinions are what
trigger the message of the text. They help the reader understand the text better because now they have involved themselves within the text, not just
the content by itself, like New Criticism, for example. These factors are what make the responses subjective. For example, the quote from The
Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien says, "He should've carried her up the stairs to her room and tied her to the bed and touched that left knee all
night long," (618). The quote can be interpreted in a few ways. " . . .And touched that left knee all night long," could be comparing the action of
'touching' to sexual relations. The quote could also be taken in a literal sense, having the knee actually touched by the character's hands. Another part
of the quote, " . . .tied her to the bed . . ." could possibly mean that he wanted to keep her in bed all night and spend time with her; however, in a
literal sense, he probably truly could have wanted to tie her to the bed. As stated earlier, defining the meaning of a text for reader–response criticism
requires the reader to state what they probably thinks the words mean. Furthermore,

Essay on Why Read Literature?
Nothing teaches us better than literature to see, in ethnic and cultural differences, the richness of the human patrimony, and to prize those differences
as manifestation humanity's multi–faceted creativity. Reading good literature is an experience of pleasure, of course; but it is also an experience of
learning what and how we are, on our human integrity and our human imperfection, with our actions, our dreams, and our ghosts, alone and in a
relationship that link us to others, in our public image and in the secret recesses of our consciousness.
The bond that literature establishes among human beings compels them to enter into dialogue. The bond also makes them conscious of a...show more

Without reading and untouched by literature will resemble a community of mutes and those of lost expressions afflicted tremendous problems of
communication due to its crude and rude language. This is true for individuals, too. A person who does not read, or reads little, or reads only trash, is
a person who speaks much but he/she will say little words such as curse words, because his/her vocabulary is lacking in the means for self–expression.
Reading Literature is not only a verbal expression, but also represents a limitation on intellect and in imagination. It is a poverty of thought, for the
simple reason to grasp our knowledge and ask what is the importance of life? We learn how to speak correctly––and deeply and subtly–– from good
literature and only from good literature. No other discipline or branch of the arts can substitute for literature in crafting the language that people
need to communicate. To speak well, to have at one's disposal a rich and diverse language, to be able to find appropriate expression for every idea
and every emotion that we want to communicate, is to be better prepared to think, to teach, to learn, to converse, and also to fantasize, to dream, to
feel. In a secret way, words repeat in all our action, even

Reader Response Theory The Reader Response Theory emerged as a reaction against the New Criticism or formalistic approach, which focused on
the text, finding all the meaning, the value in it and regarding everything else as extraneous, including readers. Despite the ideas of the Reader

It allows for inferences and insights by the reader This means that when a reader reads some literary texts it is the belief that it allows the
individual to construct his/her own meaning. Once the reader is able to interact with the text, he/she is able to explore and interpret it in a way in
which his or her cultural backgrounds is understood and that of others. Within a literary text, the reader is able to understand why specific cultures
do certain practices and how it places value on society. Furthermore, it is through a text that individuals gain insight on what is morally acceptable
to society and can be able to link it through their experiences whether in their school environment and the community. This insight may be gained
not just by reading one book, but through various literary text in which they are able to apply their critical thinking skills and construct their own
understanding whether it may be through a poem or story. However, not all similar books will be written the same way, for example, Cinderella.
There are many Cinderella books written with countless interpretation; however, readers can be able to read all and find similarities such as it is
wrong to treat people cruel or that the stepmother is cruel. Despite that, a reader may have a stepmother who is a wonderful person yet he or she can
analyze and understand that not all stepmothers are cruel or not everyone will treat a person wrongfully. In essence, the readers are able to become
critical thinkers through the assimilation of a literary

Examples Of Reader Response Theory
Reader Response Theory Reader–response theory identifies the reader as an affective agent who imparts real exist–ence and life to the work,
completing its meaning through interpretation. Reader– response criti–cism argues that literature should be viewed as art in which each reader creates
his or her own–most likely unique, text–related performance. I am using Wolfgang Iser and Stanley Fish's takes on Reader Response for my study.
Iser's Theory of Reception and Transactional Reader Response Theory According to Iser, any literary text which is a product of the Writer's intentional
acts part–ly controls the response of a reader; however, this includes an abundance of gaps. In order to comprehend more clearly, the reader must take
action in active participation in attempting to cre–atively fill these gaps with the given information of the test put before him; Thereby allowing the
Reader and the text to undergo a transactional process. Iser speaks of the Actual reader in distinction to the Implied reader who is formed within a text
and expected to react and respond in specific ways to the response inducing structure of the text. The actual reader, however, is an individual with its
own personal experiences accumu–lated as baggage wherein responses actually are continuously and inevitably changed...show more content...
What lies behind Fish's thinking is a strong view of the social construction of reality; as he firmly believes that knowledge is not objective but always
socially conditioned. All that one thinks and knows is an interpretation that is only made possible by the social context in which one lives. For Fish the
very thought one thinks are made possible by presuppositions of the community in which one lives and furthermore the socially conditioned individual,
which all individuals are, cannot think beyond the limits made possible by the culture. This culture is referred to by Fish as an interpre–tive

The Giver Response Essay

  • 1. The Giver Response Essay The Giver, a young adult fiction novel written by Lois Lowry, tells a story about Jonas, a curious boy trapped in a futuristic society full of contentment, rules, and the elimination of emotions such as fear, hatred, etc. When he begins to see The Giver, an old man who holds all of the past memories of the community, Jonas realizes a dangerous past and becomes the first to begin on a journey to escape the community to protect his loved ones and himself. I feel that this book has a lot of depth and emotion that blends together with Lowry's great literature, making it special. The book does have a few minor flaws, yet it doesn't fail to impress as it makes readers think deeply about life and what you make out of it. Here are the reasons why I recommend this book....show more content... In the book, the people of Jonas's community does not experience emotions from the absence of certain memories that the officials decided to eliminate. This hinders the people of the community to feel any suffering in human history as well as the desire to engage in activities or relationships that could result in disorder or pain. Jonas is chosen to receive these hidden memories by The Giver to discover that the world he lives in is only the first layer to what is under beneath. The fact that the author made the storyline on how Jonas discovers these memories makes me cherish my own and how I am grateful for all that I have. Furthermore, the book includes many elusive lessons and forms of symbolism that are able to be applied in real life. For example, one of the first memories that Jonas receives is a sled ride. The sled is the color red, which symbolizes the newly rich and vivid feelings and experiences that Jonas goes through. The sled ride is exhilarating, yet painful as he falls hard in a different sled ride memory. This refers to the difference between pain and pleasure that we all experience in Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Have you ever want too many things even though your life was already fulfilled and lost yourself? Have you ever ask too much and regret for what you did? Every desire, ambition, selfishness and a bit of extravagant of a human being was carefully portrayed in this story, "The Necklace". The story is about a young woman named Mathilde Loisel. Born in a family of artisans, she wasn't rich, but beautiful and glamor. But she never feel satisfied of what she had and never stop dreaming to have more, to live a luxury life with expensive homes and glittering dresses, and eventually paid hard for her nonsense dreams. In "The Necklace", Guy de Maupassant uses third person limited narration to show how Mathilde Loisel changes in how she...show more content... When her husband gave her the invitation to the ball, which was a perfect place to meet the rich people, Mathilde got mad and cried. It was a shame since she has nothing to wear. Mr Loisel gave his money to Mathilde and she got an elegance dress. But she didn't stop and wanted to have jewels. Mathilde met her friend, Madame Forestier and chose an gorgeous diamond necklace. Of course, she became the prettiest woman in the ball, with everyone stared at her, as if she was the most attractive woman ever. She felt fascinated, just like her dream came true. But then a tragic came to her. She lost the necklace! Mathilde and her husband tried to find the necklace, but they found nothing. Mathilde lost her hope and had aged five years. The Loisels finally decided to replace the diamonds for 36 000 Francs, spent all of their money and accepted to pay the debts. It was such an unfortunate situation. After Mathilde lost the necklace, she was described as " And, clad like a poor woman, she went to the fruiterer, to the grocer, to the butcher, a basket on her arm, haggling, insulted, fighting for every wretched halfpenny of her money". (Maupassant 8). The family was suffering from poverty and have to pay the debts continuously. Mathilde changed immediately and did everything. They have worked so hard to earn every single penny for their life, to survive and pay all those debts. The third person limited Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Examples Of Literary Criticism Of Hamlet After reading your chosen essay of literary criticism, respond to the following questions: 1) What was your author's thesis? Loberg's starts her essay by informing the reader that physical violence is the most infrequent form of aggression and that people prefer alternatives that give bigger effect and less punishment. Her thesis implies that Hamlet shows a great amount of examples of how humans psychologically treat each other. Characters spread aggression in non physical violent ways such as spreading lies, framing others and etc. Opening to the thought that the Queen was not seen as a suspect to Ophelia's death because she did not use physical violence. " I suggest that, within this context of prevalent indirect aggression and with...show more content... 64 Loberg) "Stereotype"(p. 61 Loberg) 6) What did this particular perspective add to your understanding of Hamlet? I found this essay to be very intriguing and it definitely changed my perspective on Queen Gertrude, it made me want to pay more attention to hints in reading and makes me want to think more in depth. If I never read this essay I would have never thought that Gertrude could have been involved in Ophelia's death. 7) Did you notice anything about the way in which this essay was written that seems to contradict essay "rules" you have been taught in the past? If so, explain I realized that the author did not order her information from first events to the end events but a quite random order, which is something I've never done because I believe it is just common sense to order information chronologically which I found surprising that the author would do that, she still managed to get her points across and have me understand but I think it would have been more efficient if the author had her information in chronological

Summary of Major Ideas In "Annabel Lee," Edgar Allen Poe writes about his love for his deceased wife. He uses this poem to remanence about the strong love and memories they shared together. Then, Edgar Allen Poe begins to paint a picture of her death, and how nature took her away from him. Lastly, He explains that even though she is gone, her memory and love will always linger with him. • 6. What Is Literature Essay Charmine J. Cramales BS Math II Lit 3 10:30 – 12:00 What is Literature? Poems, novels, and stories; these are some of the things that first came to my mind upon pondering on the question 'What is Literature?'. And just lately I have known that literature also includes songs, speeches, plays, and many others in written and spoken forms. I have also known that things that are produced out of creative imagination can be referred as literary works which are the ones that comprise literature. Considering this description of what literature is, the coverage of literature seems very puzzling. If literary works are those produced out of creative imagining, then it would directly point to fictional works. But then, there are also...show more content... Take for example the views of two individuals coming from different places on anovel based on the culture of one. It would likely be the same if their culture and beliefs are quiet related but if not, then they would surely have different understandings on certain parts of that novel. Hence, defining literature as those considered by people as 'literature' is questionable. Eagleton also associated literature as any kind of works which are valued highly by people. But then again, since people may have different perceptions on things, one may value highly a certain work while another person may consider it just as a plain writing. As stated by Ms. Pinzon, a literature professor, a personal letter can be an example of this. The recipient of the letter can be expected to really value the letter while her classmate may not. Hence, this can't define literature as a whole. Then, what really is literature? Many great critics have tried formulating a fixed definition of literature but have failed to do so. In the rise of every possible definition of what literature is, counter arguments also rise. Literature, though it seems impossible to enumerate everything it covers, play an important role in every individual's life. One can influence using literature or be influenced by it. Examples of these are the novels made by our very own national hero, Jose Rizal – the Noli Me Tangeri and El Filibusterismo. During his time, Rizal has

  • 8. Anne Frank: the Diary of a Young Girl Response Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl Response The Diary of a Young Girl written by Anne Frank is an inspirational coming of age diary written to teach the reader that difficult situations lead to maturity. Anne's diary shows the evolution and maturity of Anne's character over a few years. Anne had to face many challenges in her difficult situation. She was hiding in a confined Annexe because she was a targeted victim of genocide during the Holocaust. These situations led her to an entire new level of maturity. The diary also teaches the reader that life is a gift worth appreciating. The Diary of a Young Girlshows how Anne constantly kept a certain amount of optimism and was grateful to be alive. She knew the conditions could have been...show more content... The becoming more responsible and facing new difficulties can lead to maturity. Another example would be when someone moves out of his or her house. Without preparation, it takes a lot of maturity to clean, cook, and complete all of the everyday tasks of life. These situations are examples of big steps in a person's life. These situations both lead to more responsibility. If that responsibility is accepted, then that is a huge step of maturity because a person is accepting the challenges that will come. These situations are similar to the way Anne matured in the Annexe. She had to preparation and did not necessarily know what to expect. Anne's situation was a personal rite of passage, where she chose to grow up and take as much from her experiences as possible. The story is written in a diary format. As a diary is on a day–to–day basis, it is able to emphasize that her living situation is constantly being threatened. Diaries are also arranged by date, so we are able to really see her constant changes from beginning to end. Diaries are meant for discrete information, so the readers can be sure that it is the truth and connect to her thought and feelings. The diary itself in many ways led to her maturity. In the Secret Annexe, when Anne felt isolated and distant from her family, she often felt like she could confess her feelings and thoughts to her diary, because she will not receive judgment in return. • 9. Response To 'Where The Red Fern Grows' Dear Bismarck Public Schools, May 24th 2016 I'm a student at WMS, I honestly enjoyed the book Where the Red Fern Grows. I know some people may have thought differently about this, but it affects everyone differently. I'd like to tell you about my opinion about this book and what others might have thought about this book. Some people may have thought that this was the best book they ever read. To me it wasn't a bad book, but I thought it was a bit boring and below my reading level. I like more of horror books and with a lot of suspense. I know, I know, everyone doesn't like those books, but I think you could of done a Survey on what kind of books people like and decide on what book to read according to the class or schools. • 10. The Scarlet Letter Chapter 9-15 Analysis In chapters 9–15 of The Scarlet Letter, the author decides to dedicate an entire chapter to each character. For example, on chapter 9, the chapter is dedicated to what happens with Roger. Roger becomes friends with Arthur Dimmesdale in chapter 9. Dimmesdale is sick, and he thinks Roger is kind and suspects nothing. But Roger, who is Arthur's personal physician, begins to suspect that Dimmesdale is hiding something from him. At this part of the book, we don't know what the author plans for Dimmesdale to hide, if he even is hiding anything at all. Soon enough, in chapter 10, Roger thinks that Dimmesdale is Pearl's father, from the fact that Dimmesdale begins to speak of his "daughter" and quickly stops. This leaves Roger wondering what daughter, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. Emotional Response Essay WEEK TWO I had not considered emotional history to a great extent before the seminar, instead focusing on the 'everyday' aspect of infant mortality (IM). Dyhouse and Newton's articles presented questions, including why concern over IM grew, and why males were stoic rather than expressing emotion; something I had not acknowledged as part of Victorian mannerism, attributing it to the patriarchies of the postmodern world. Questioning whether the sources used by Newton portrayed true emotions or were merely presentations of such expanded my understanding, and presented further questions. Can we truly understand past emotions when all we have is a representation and cannot experience them the same way? I suggested that we can merely interpret the presentation of emotion, not the true emotions of the past, however, I now acknowledge that there is something of a perpetual emotional response (PER) to the death of infants, and that we are able to interpret the past's emotions through this understanding....show more content... The ruling classes had to maintain the empire, and as such, technocrats were forced to act to stop the population decreasing. The rise of working class consciousness (WCC) was a reason behind social reforms, as the elite wished to control their subordinates to a greater extent. I considered my own perception of IM after the seminar. With no experience of it myself, I was unable to determine whether a PER was entirely accurate, although I turned to examples I knew of. This brought my attention back to AriГЁs' 'attitudes to death' and the changes in death's perception between the Victorian period and Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. Response To Macbeth We all experience a moment in life where there was an urge of wanting something that you couldn't get easily, for a kid purchasing an iPhone 7s plus for the price of $1049 plus tax. Possibly even try to personate a role that someone is already in, like co–captain of the basketball team wanting to take the head of the captain place on the team. Some would take drastic measures into ensuring that they get what they want and are satisfy with themselves. At that moment the only thought running through a person mind could be what is the possible outcome of you taking the easy and fast lane to get what you want? • 13. Fahrenheit 451 Literary Response Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 takes place in the 24th century, as "The Heart and the Salamander" introduces a futuristic new society, where mass media, overpopulation, and immense censorship has taken over. In this society, intelligence is considered fugitive action, books are illegal to own due to their provoking philosophy, and firemen ironically produce fires instead of preventing them. This is told through the perception of the story's protagonist, Guy Montag, during his hectic and enlightening period of life. The story beings with Montag, a fireman who destroys books for his livelihood, meets a beaming young lady named Clarisse McClellan. She introduces herself, converses with him, and questions things Montag has never considered...show more content... During his last conversation with her, he learned that she is afraid of violence from her peers, and how her uncle mentions that the world is unrecognizable today compared to how it was in his time. It was a world where paintings contained actual people, and important conversations were made. One day, the fire station receives a phone call stating that there is an old lady who has books stacked in her home. The firemen begin destroying immediately upon arriving. Montag realizes the inhumane treatment towards the old lady and begs her to leave the house before getting seriously injured. • 15. Simran Gaglani English honors Period 1, Mrs. Grexton November 18 2011 There are many significant symbols used to represent the different themes in To Kill a Mockingbird. Throughout the book Harper Lee transmits a message to the reader using examples and symbols to get her point across. Some of these symbols include the dresses, Tim Johnson, and dependencies. The symbol that best represents the theme of growing up would be clothing. Throughout the book, clothing has been more than just a choice of style; it had been a sign of maturity. Another instance would be when Miss Maudie asks Scout, "'Where are your britches today?'" Scout answers back, "Under my dress." (Lee 309) This shows that Scout has finally learned to accept the...show more content... '"He's far from dead, Jem, he hasn't gotten started yet."' Racism has a funny way of popping back up once you think its done and over with. Just when you think its about to die out, there is still more out there. Aside from clothes and Tim, deceptive appearance is also an important theme symbolized by people's different dependencies. Although the weakness may look like one thing, it might actually mean another. For example: '"secretly Miss Finch, I'm not much of a drinker, but you see they could never, never understand that I live the way I do because that's the way I want to live."' (Lee 268) Dolphus Raymond's "apparent" weakness/dependency seem to be an addiction to spirits. But as we take a closer look he reveals to us that his so called addiction is only a cover up so people would spare the time to try and figure out his motives. "His left arm was fully 12 inches shorter than his right, and hung dead at his side."' (Lee 248) Tom's state implies that he committed the crime and looks as if he is guilty, but his dependency being his left arm proves that he couldn't have done the crime. "Mrs Dubose was a morphine addict, she took pain–killers for years...she was going to leave this world holden to nothing and nobody."' Hearing this from Atticus jem realizes, "You mean that's what her fits were?" (Lee 147 and 148) Jem has always seen Mrs. Dubose as a horrible old lady with a bitter tongue. • 16. Response To Literature Roland Barthes once said "Literature is the question minus the answer." This means that there is no real answer to literature, there are just the questions. This is designed so you can incorporate and have different ideas about literature instead of there being a definite answer to what everything means. Shakespeare for example uses a certain language and his writings require you to think about what's happening and why he worded it the way he did. Other books such as the Invisible Man has a different meaning to the quote. At first I thought that this quote was referring to racism, but it was so much more than that. This quote is saying that there is no answer to life. There are just a bunch of questions followed by decisions but there is no ...show more content... Once you accept your past, new beginnings are a necessity to help find happiness in something you love doing. New beginnings means a brighter future and a happier life in the future. This is shown in the book the invisible man because he finds new a beginning, "This was a new phase, I realized, a new beginning, and I would have to take that part of myself that looked on with remote eyes and keep it always at the distance of the campus, the hospital machine, the battle royal–all now far behind. Perhaps the part of me that observed listlessly but saw all, missing nothing, was still...the dissenting voice, my grandfather part; the cynical disbelieving part–the traitor self that always threatened internal discord. ( chapter 16)" the invisible man was able to overcome his past with shock therapy in the hospital and he didn't listen to his grandfather when he constantly doubted the invisible man. He joins a group called the brotherhood of harlem. It is a group of men that try to gain rights that they deserve. They are sick of being restricted from going into bars and other places just because he is black so him and this group try to gain back what they deserve. This is the invisible man's new beginning. • 17. Essay about Reader-Response vs. New Criticism New Criticism vs. Reader–Response A piece of work can be evaluated in plenty of ways. Critique methods such as Reader–Response, Deconstructive Criticism, New Criticism, and many others act as examples of literary evaluations. All of the critique methods share similarities, but differ in other ways. Reader–Response and New Criticism, for example, share characteristics but they are also two very opposing things. Reader–Response focuses on attention towards the text influenced by the reader's thoughts. New Criticism aims towards the text with no influence, but the text alone. The two methods share the same features such as excluding the author's intentions and recognizing details from the texts, and they also contrast by having a different...show more content... The criticism encourages the reader to explore his thoughts while reading a text. A person may read something over and over again and interpret a different meaning every time. For Reader–Response, the type of focuses required comes from the reader. Personal experiences and opinions are what trigger the message of the text. They help the reader understand the text better because now they have involved themselves within the text, not just the content by itself, like New Criticism, for example. These factors are what make the responses subjective. For example, the quote from The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien says, "He should've carried her up the stairs to her room and tied her to the bed and touched that left knee all night long," (618). The quote can be interpreted in a few ways. " . . .And touched that left knee all night long," could be comparing the action of 'touching' to sexual relations. The quote could also be taken in a literal sense, having the knee actually touched by the character's hands. Another part of the quote, " . . .tied her to the bed . . ." could possibly mean that he wanted to keep her in bed all night and spend time with her; however, in a literal sense, he probably truly could have wanted to tie her to the bed. As stated earlier, defining the meaning of a text for reader–response criticism requires the reader to state what they probably thinks the words mean. Furthermore, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 18. Salvador Late or Early: Response to Literature Essay Poverty and stress take away the pleasures of childhood from the children unfortunate to be born into such families. In Salvador Late or Early, a short story by Sandra Cisneros, tells us about the stressful lifestyle of an underprivileged boy named Salvador. Salvador The author believes Salvador is an interesting character because he's a boy with responsibilities of an adult, he is a solitary and misunderstood kid at school, and because throughout all the pain and suffering he's been through, he remains unbroken. First of all, Cisneros thinks Salvador is interesting because he's so young yet so much responsibility is thrown on to his shoulders. He is merely a child him himself and ...show more content... "Salvador, late or early, sooner or later arrives with the string of younger brother's ready" Poverty stricken Salvador is plagued daily with the responsibility of his brother's, seen as an invisible nobody at school, and aches with not having a break from this endless cycle, but none of it breaks Salvador's spirit. He is an engine that keeps running, despite being mistreated, uncared for, and beaten. It's amazing that Salvador, with his "geography of scars," and "history of hurt," hasn't lost hope. He hasn't lost hope because he thinks not of how difficult his situation is at the moment, but of the better future soon to come. A future where Salvador's mama isn't so busy, a future where they won't eat corn flakes from a tin cup, a future where his crayons aren't "little fingers of red, green, yellow, blue" or "nubs of black sticks that tumble," He remains going everyday with his hopes that keep him going locked inside deep somewhere as he fulfills his responsibilities day to day. Salvador is also kept going by the love he gets from his brothers. Salvador's name literally means 'Savior' and to his little brothers, he is their savior. He provides them with everything his mother can't give them and with the love they give back to Salvador, he finds strength and keeps pushing forward. • 19. Essay on Why Read Literature? Nothing teaches us better than literature to see, in ethnic and cultural differences, the richness of the human patrimony, and to prize those differences as manifestation humanity's multi–faceted creativity. Reading good literature is an experience of pleasure, of course; but it is also an experience of learning what and how we are, on our human integrity and our human imperfection, with our actions, our dreams, and our ghosts, alone and in a relationship that link us to others, in our public image and in the secret recesses of our consciousness. The bond that literature establishes among human beings compels them to enter into dialogue. The bond also makes them conscious of a...show more content... Without reading and untouched by literature will resemble a community of mutes and those of lost expressions afflicted tremendous problems of communication due to its crude and rude language. This is true for individuals, too. A person who does not read, or reads little, or reads only trash, is a person who speaks much but he/she will say little words such as curse words, because his/her vocabulary is lacking in the means for self–expression. Reading Literature is not only a verbal expression, but also represents a limitation on intellect and in imagination. It is a poverty of thought, for the simple reason to grasp our knowledge and ask what is the importance of life? We learn how to speak correctly––and deeply and subtly–– from good literature and only from good literature. No other discipline or branch of the arts can substitute for literature in crafting the language that people need to communicate. To speak well, to have at one's disposal a rich and diverse language, to be able to find appropriate expression for every idea and every emotion that we want to communicate, is to be better prepared to think, to teach, to learn, to converse, and also to fantasize, to dream, to feel. In a secret way, words repeat in all our action, even Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 20. Reader Response Theory The Reader Response Theory emerged as a reaction against the New Criticism or formalistic approach, which focused on the text, finding all the meaning, the value in it and regarding everything else as extraneous, including readers. Despite the ideas of the Reader Response in the 1920's, the late Louise Rosenblatt pioneered the Reader Response theory. She was a literary theorist and an English Educator. In her writing, Literature as Exploration written in 1938, she emphasizes that the readers play an important role in the life of any piece of literature. According to Rosenblatt, "A novel or a poem or a play remains merely ink spot on a paper until a reader transform them into a set of meaningful symbols" (1985, 25)....show more content... It allows for inferences and insights by the reader This means that when a reader reads some literary texts it is the belief that it allows the individual to construct his/her own meaning. Once the reader is able to interact with the text, he/she is able to explore and interpret it in a way in which his or her cultural backgrounds is understood and that of others. Within a literary text, the reader is able to understand why specific cultures do certain practices and how it places value on society. Furthermore, it is through a text that individuals gain insight on what is morally acceptable to society and can be able to link it through their experiences whether in their school environment and the community. This insight may be gained not just by reading one book, but through various literary text in which they are able to apply their critical thinking skills and construct their own understanding whether it may be through a poem or story. However, not all similar books will be written the same way, for example, Cinderella. There are many Cinderella books written with countless interpretation; however, readers can be able to read all and find similarities such as it is wrong to treat people cruel or that the stepmother is cruel. Despite that, a reader may have a stepmother who is a wonderful person yet he or she can analyze and understand that not all stepmothers are cruel or not everyone will treat a person wrongfully. • 21. Examples Of Reader Response Theory Reader Response Theory Reader–response theory identifies the reader as an affective agent who imparts real exist–ence and life to the work, completing its meaning through interpretation. Reader– response criti–cism argues that literature should be viewed as art in which each reader creates his or her own–most likely unique, text–related performance. I am using Wolfgang Iser and Stanley Fish's takes on Reader Response for my study. Iser's Theory of Reception and Transactional Reader Response Theory According to Iser, any literary text which is a product of the Writer's intentional acts part–ly controls the response of a reader; however, this includes an abundance of gaps. In order to comprehend more clearly, the reader must take action in active participation in attempting to cre–atively fill these gaps with the given information of the test put before him; Thereby allowing the Reader and the text to undergo a transactional process. Iser speaks of the Actual reader in distinction to the Implied reader who is formed within a text and expected to react and respond in specific ways to the response inducing structure of the text. The actual reader, however, is an individual with its own personal experiences accumu–lated as baggage wherein responses actually are continuously and inevitably changed...show more content...
