The Right Thing Essay
"Doing the right thing" is can be based upon a number of different factors. First, there is generally a sense of what is absolute goodness. These are
the absolute moral standards by which we should live our lives, given to us either either by a higher power or our cultural environment. In
Christianity, for instance, this is expressed in the Ten Commandments absolute ethical laws divined by God, also shared by other major religions. In
secular society, it is the rule of law, the consensus of the majority of society on the regulations by which that society should be governed. Balanced
against this sense of absolute goodness is relative goodness. Relative goodness is still a moral rightness but dependent on a situation still agreed...show

For every act of conformity to a social good there is an opposing act redefining what is " the right thing." We envy people who make a lot of money,
yet we despise greed. However, within the context of the group in which the money–driven work, greed is good. We may frown on selfish wealth, yet
on Wall Street that obsessiveness is good. Moreover, greed may actually be doing good for others increasing income for other's retirement, college
tuition. Again, what is the " right thing" becomes subject to context. It is right to be competitive but not to cheat towards that end. We are
encouraged to make "A's" in school, but not to do so in a dishonorable way. We should care about others, but also teach them to be independent. We
should work within the rules, yet be our own person. A " bad" person may be forgiven if he or she has redeemed themselves or shown remorse for
the act they have commited. Then consciousness of doing the wrong thing becomes important. Those who don't show remorse we still condemn. We
can forgive those who don't know what's wrong. In fact, forgiveness is a good thing. In general, it is important to obey certain standards of goodness
in society both for the greater good and to keep society from self–destructing. We praise charity as an act of giving to others less fortunate, also
providing for the greater

Do The Right Thing?
Do The Right Thing (1989) is a classic film written, produced, and directed by Spike Lee. The focus on the movie is set on racial issues, and the
entire movie takes place on the hottest day of the year in the Bed–Stuy section of Brooklyn. Lee does an incredible job demonstrating the tautness
between the races on the block specifically among the African American race and American Italian race. Lee's use of symbolism among the characters,
mise–en–scene, and shot composition in his film Do The Right Thing from beginning to end illustrates the struggle between peace and conflict.
During the time this film first came out there was many racial tensions going on in America. Primarily in the blocks of New York. In this film Lee
addresses these racial issues by creating a film that takes place in one entire day on the block where protagonist, Mookie, lives and works as a
pizza delivery boy for Sal, an Italian American pizza owner in the block that is populated by mostly blacks. Lee's symbolism among characters is
absolutely incredible from start to finish. The beginning of the film is started with music by Public Enemy "Fight The Power" where we see a young
female (Rosie Perez) dancing, and at one point with a boxing outfit. This demonstrates an aggressive feel right off the bat, while the next scene takes
place over at LOVE FM, a radio station ran by Mister Senor Love Daddy who is waking up the town and warning them about the high temperatures of
that summer day. Right away Lee

Do The Right Thing : Pop Culture
Do the Right Thing: Pop Culture at its Best
When we think of pop culture, especially in movies we think of celebrities, fashion, and tag lines. While Do the Right Thing (DTRT) by Spike Lee has
maybe one of those, but its powerful themes, characters and presentation turned it into one of the most notable films ever. It heavily employs the
interactionist approach by showing different cultures interacting with one another, and making major points of their own stereotypical racial biases,
bigotry and degrees of discrimination, as well as the initial signs of gentrification which culminate into series of ever intensifying events that forever
change the Brooklyn neighborhood of Bedford–Stuyvesant (Bed–Sty). DTRT utilizes metaphor of heat and pop culture themes of music, fashion and
racial conflict, to address real social, economic, institutional and political inequities that still plague our society today.
DTRT chronicles one of the hottest days on record in the infamous Bed–Sty, from its simmering beginnings to its violent end. It uses a deliberate
cinematography style where actors to speak directly into the camera, and are framed within certain angles to depict their position within the dialogue
(i.e. one character is shot from below to signify that he is above the situation or person he is talking to). While the characters can be seen as
stereotypical, they are in fact significantly concrete and a reflection of many in reality. They are strong vehicles for Lee to address how

Do The Right Thing Themes
As I sat in class to watch Spike Lee's "Do the Right Thing", I noticed that a 20 year old film could convey such overwhelmingly real, modern social
viewpoints. Many of the themes portrayed in "Do the Right Thing" which pave the way to the inescapable disarray of the movie that are issues which
we confront today. Bedford–Stuyvesant or better known as Bed–Stuy, this Brooklyn neighborhood has gradually been the objective of gentrification
since the mid 90s. Hip hop fans realize that Bed–Stuy is home to some of the most illustrious and well known artists like Jay Z, Notorious B.I.G., Mos
Def, Lil' Kim, actor–comedian Tracy Morgan, thus some more.

Just imagine a world without people being taught, that is not being taught to
tie your shoes at the age of three or four. Now imagine "Do The Right Thing", being
played for high school students across the United States. We teach our teach our

types of motions; emotionally, logically, and historically. As far as the artistic aspect;

point throughout this film was to make a impression on us, artistically. Not only did
a artistic aspect pop up in my mind, but as stated earlier a emotional affect was
brought to my attention. The first being Radio, who was seen throughout the movie;
as a macho sort of figure, Radio's love for his radio is shown as a object of attention
throughout the movie and even when Radio is killed by police officers. Radio's goal
was to make a point, Sal the owner of the pizzeria was going to equalize his pizzeria
or else. Well unfortunately this or else moment came to a screeching halt due to the
cops. Radio, was taken forcibly by the cops and killed. This moment through the film
made me gasp, with the way the camera angled you could feel the intensity.
Throughout high school, which needless to point out was half a decade ago,
I remember being taught history, but one thing was forgotten; Do The Right Thing, I
say this because this movie depicts everything that should be taught in the
education system from racism to artistic points.

Do the Right Thing The first review that I found was in the New York Times and was written by Vincent Canby. Canby starts his review by quoting
Mr. Senor Love Daddy who is "doing the nasty to your ears, playing the platters that matter" and explains that this movie takes place on the hottest
day of the summer. "Do the Right Thing" stars Spike Lee, who is able to direct and star in this movie "without compromising his position as an
aggressively outspoken advocate of black rights." The whole story of this movie takes place within a 24–hour period, on the hottest day of the year.
During this time "tempers fray, kidding turns mean, long–hidden bigotry becomes manifested and violence explodes in and around Sal's Famous
Pizzeria." Canby makes sure to make Lee's opinion heard when he talks about how this explosion of emotions was in no way a jab at a group of whites
attacking a group of blacks who had "invaded their territory." Lee is described as having a big screen presence even though he is so small and thin.
The move as a whole is described as being full of "character, color, incident and music." Canby spends a large part of this review talking about how Lee
present controversial topics in both his movie and in real life. Lee showed up to the screening of this moving in a Malcolm X t–shirt and made it clear
that the day this movie was shown, was the day that would have been Malcolm's 64th birthday. Lee was also quoted saying that it is not the job of

Ethics- Do the Right Thing
1.Spike Lee intended us to conclude that violence is not an answer for any problems. In this case, the character, Da Mayor, would be a classic
example of how problems should have been solved. He could have intended us to conclude that by resorting to violence in any situation, the
consequences that we would have to face will not be very favourable and it could lead to more problems instead of solving the current situation. It is
always better to nip the problem from the bud, instead of letting it grow and allowing it to torment everyone. 2.In moral subjectivism context, Mookie
did the right thing, as he was enraged by the death of, Radio Raheem, a fellow black man, and so did everybody else. However in this case, everybody

People in this neighbourhood were more comfortable within their own comfort zone and each ethnicity always felt superior to the other, which is
a reason for constant friction between them. 5.Yes, there can be different moral rules for different ethnic and cultural group. Different ethnic and
cultural groups are from different roots and upbringing. Therefore it is natural for each group to have their own set of rules and belief. The trick
is to accept each and other's differences and learn to respect and live along with it, instead of disrespecting and discriminating. However amidst all
these, there can be a universal moral code among everyone, to allow everybody to have a common ground to mingle with. 6.In this movie, Spike
Lee does present some of his characters as stereotypes. For example, Pino in this movie, is a staunch Italian who dislikes living in the neighbourhood
where the majority are blacks. He cannot bring himself to embrace the blacks and their way of life in the neighbourhood. Most of his characters are
usually stereotypical against other ethnicity in the neighbourhood. However he does have characters, such as Da Mayor, who embraces and accepts
everybody as they are. Spike Lee could have presented his characters in such a manner to portray to the general public, the reality of living in a
multicultural neighbourhood. He might

Essay On Doing The Right Thing
"Never be afraid to do what's right; especially if the wellbeing of a person or animal is at stake, society's punishments are small compared to the
wounds we inflict on our souls when we look the other way." Sometimes people can't find the courage to do the right thing in hard situations. This
relates to the text "Doing the right thing", "Thank You, Ma'am" and "The Road Not Taken" because it is evident that the persona in these excerpts
found the courage to do the right thing. To begin, people can get their courage from many different things. In Doing the Right Thing" by Rick Reilly,
is about When four division three college football players go inside of Buddy's Small Lots, a catch all chain store to buy some supplies. When they

The poem is talking about how the narrator has two roads in front of him which are two options and he has to pick one. "Two roads diverged in a
wood, and I–I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference." When the author says this this is him doing the right thing
because he took the road he wanted to take and not the road somebody else wanted the narrator to take. This also relates to him having courage
because the poem also says "Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that passing there Had worn them really about the same," This is the character/narrator thinking of the pros and cons about which
one would have a better future for him. Once he found the one he thought was right for him is when he had fully found his courage to take the
road he did. Which was the road less traveled by. So this is how the person in "The Road Not Taken" found the courage to do the right thing.
Ultimately, having courage to do the right thing can be given from one person to another, like in the excerpt "Thank You Ma'am", which is a story
about a young man named Roger, who tries to steal a old womans (Mrs.Jones) purse. He ends up failing to take the purse and Mrs.James (Old woman)
takes him to her house to clean him us, and teach him right from wrong. Mrs.Jones did the right thing by taking him in to let him wash his face, and
feed him. As the excerpt

Themes Of Do The Right Thing
The film Do the Right Thing is a very relevant on issues of race. The film shows how there is tension between all races. The film shows racial
tension between the communities in the hottest day of the year. The heat is a theme in the film. Heat in general gets people on edge and raises
tension. The film relates to W.E.B. Dubois work "The Soul of Black Folk." Dubois (1903) work includes the concepts of the veil and double
consciousness. The African Americans in the film deal with the idea of a veil. Mookie the protagonist deals with the idea of double
consciousness. In Dubois (1903) "The Soul of Black Folk" the ideas of double consciousness and the veil affect blacks. A veil is a piece of
clothing that conceals a face. The veil is figurative and is presented in the film through Buggin outs questions Sal of the wall of fame. Even though
it's Sal's pizzeria Buggin out raises a great point. Buggin out tells Sal that the clientele he attracts are black folk. While black folk are the majority
of the customers they should have a say on the wall of fame. The veil is to conceal the importance of blacks. To Sal and his sons blacks are not
important enough to put on the wall. The community is diverse but Sal's son Pino view blacks with hate and resentment. Pino views blacks as apes
and animals not people. Another example of the veil can be the conversation Mookie has with Pino. Mookie criticizes Pino for constantly critiquing
blacks and questions his favorite entertainers. Pino's

the characters have to have the courage to make their own decisions and do the right thing. I can conclude that in all the issues they have to have the
courage to do the right thing. In "Doing the right thing" they have courage because of their families, in "The Road Not Taken" the character has the
courage to do the right thing because he wants to make his own decision. In "Thankyou Ma'am" the character has the courage to do the right thing

He also wanted to give the other path a chance because it was less traveled on. The other path could have been easy but had ended up getting
harder along the way. And if he took that path he would feel less rewarded and that he took the easy way out. Since he took the less traveled path it
could have been hard but he would feel more rewarded and ended with better results. In the short story "Thankyou Ma'am by Langston Hughes, the
character, Mrs. Jones had the courage to do the right thing because she had done things she wasn't proud of, so she put herself in other's shoes. When
a boy tried to steal her purse she grabbed him and took him back to her house to wash his face and get food. In the article, The author says, "I have
done things, too, which I would not tell you, son–neither tell God, if he didn't already know." Mrs. JOnes has done things she was not proud of. She
might have lived a childhood where she wasn't wealthy enough to afford certain things she needed and wanted. So when they boy, Roger tried to
steal her purse she taught him a lesson and brought him back to her house to wash his face comb his hair and feed him dinner. She also gave him
$10 to buy blue suede shoes. From all of these issues, the characters have to have a find a way to have the courage and do the right thing. In the story

The Theme Of Do The Right Thing
Do the Right Thing
In the film, Do the Right Thing, director Spike Lee presents the audience with the theme of racism. The title represents the everyday choices that we as
Americans of various ethnicities, cultures, and race. Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing allows the viewers to decide for themselves the right thing to do
about racism. Everyone has the choice to be accepting of cultures, or people different from them. The film portrays how an Italian American named Sal
has a neighborhood pizzeria in Bedford–Stuyvesant, New York. The neighborhood is primarilyAfrican American, but there is a diverse amount of
other cultures made up of, Hispanics, European Americans, also there is a store owned by Koreans. This film displays the discrimination between the
races and how this can lead to violence.
The film has several ethnicities within a small area along a time line of one day. The film has many, informative methods in which it describe the
various diversity issues of all the characters within the movie. For example, Sal's pizzeria which is owned by an Italian American has pictures of
famous Italian Americans on the wall and plays Italian music. One character named Buggin Out is always upset. Bugging out hates the fact that there
are no black people pictures on the wall especially since the pizzeria is in a black neighborhood. His perspective represents the people in the African
American community that always protest, but usually don't work to improve the community. The

Do The Right Thing
Spike Lee's movie "Do the Right Thing" portrays a time in American history when the post–civil rights movement was still fresh in everyone's mind. It
is 1989, and Martin Luther King Jr and Malcolm X have placed their stamp on the country. While MLK preached for peace, Malcom X wanted the
people to fight back in self–defense. This movie portrays these two views side by side through several different scenes.
The movie is set in the black community of Bedford–Stuyevesant on the hottest day of the year. The neighborhood DJ Love Daddy opens the stage,
telling everyone to "wake up", and that it will be a hot, hot day. The temperature seems to be a frequently talked about subject in the beginning of the
film, suggesting that something is bound to happen as heat symbolizes anger and violence. There are many little instances of racial problems that lead
up to the big finale, proving that, while the civil rights movement had ended, race was still and still is a part of American culture. Mookie, the film's
main character, works at Sal's pizzeria with Sal, Pino, and Vito. While this is a mainlyAfrican American neighborhood, Sal and his family are
"American Italians". They take great pride in this, and even have a wall of fame commemorating their heritage. Buggin Out sees this wall and takes
offense to it. He asks Sal "Why are there no brothers on the wall?" since they live in a mainly black community. Sal replies that it is his business, and
he decides who goes up on the wall.

We notice that the headlines are about the heat. Lee adds more of a yellow shade to the paper stand and the newspapers themselves, which helps us to
better grasp that it is a hot summer day. There are many colors incorporated – yellow, red and orange are used vividly throughout the scene. The colors
allow us to associate with the weather and certain emotions that are being felt by some of the characters. During the introduction of the scene, Lee uses
different camera angles and sound to place a stronger focus on the water and refreshments in this scene to show emphasis on the temperature. We are
shown a close up camera angle of a girl submerging her face in water to cool herself off and a side view of another person avoiding the heat by
standing directly under a showerhead as the water slowly pours out. By slowing down both clips, Lee makes us remember the feeling of the cold
water on a hot summer day. We are also taken to a street where all the neighbor kids are playing and the excitement that they feel when all the water
starts spraying out of the fire hydrant is vividly displayed. The camera rises and shows us how much everyone enjoying the water and having fun. These
angles help the audience share the feeling with the characters and remember hot days in the summer that they have experienced.
Sound is another important aspect of the scene. The music selection in the background

"DO THE RIGHT THING"
Spike Lee's movie Do the Right Thing is an excellent portrayal of what life was and is most certainly like in some areas of New York City and across
the United States of America.
His movie tells the story of Mookie an African American pizza deliveryman, trying to make a living to support his son and girlfriend. He works for
Sal and his two sons Vito and Pino who hold completely opposite attitudes when it comes to race. Then there is Radio Raheem who organizes a boycott
at Sal's pizza parlor because of the lack of racial diversity on their wall of fame.
As the movie begins you become well aware of the fact that the people who...show more content...
Sal should have realized that in order to keep his business alive he would have to not only tolerate but learn to respect his customers. Since it seemed
in the movie that the area had an invasion of African Americans and Sal along with his sons were annoyed by that fact. It was almost as if it were a
resistance towards them, to make them realize who's territory they were on.
The tension in this film eventually built up to the point of senseless violence against each other. This just proves that there is no room for
accommodation and cooperation of any kind in the near future. It would work best if all groups could come to a mutual understanding of each other
and except the fact that they must learn to live in peace and as neighbors.
If I were a film critic I would give this film four and a half stars. It was well made and the actors were excellent. Although I have little to no
experience living in a situation such as the one in the movie, I feel as though the lifestyle of these particular characters were portrayed truthfully. It
was a culture shock to me, and the fact that it was most likely taken from real life is amazing in my mind. This movie not only made me think about
the world as a whole but made me realize how incredibly lucky I am to have grown up in the environment in which I have lived in my entire life.

Director and actor Spike Lee presents his "truth" about race relations in his movie Do the Right Thing. The film exhibits the spectacle of
black discrimination and racial altercations. Through serious, angry, and loud sounds, Lee stays true to the ethnicity of his characters, all of which

The burning of Sal's Famous Pizzeria will leave an imprint in the minds of anyone who watches. When Sal smashes Raheem's radio, the tension turns
to uproar. Total bedlam occurs within minutes after the death of Raheem by the city police. This could be a physical attack on both sides. Both of the
actions taken by Radio Raheem and Sal were uncalled for.
Mookie performed a heroic contribution as he shifted the fighting away from Sal and towards Sal's Pizzeria. In fact Mookie saved Sal's life in the
midst of everything. In the middle of the chaos the Korean man says, "I'm black, you, me, the same." This reflects how people in society try
to fit into certain groups that seem to be the right thing to do at the moment.
Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing focuses on scenes representing failed communication, dire stereotyping, absence of trust, and wrongful violence that
reflects the existing concerns about racism in America. The intense language and strong gestures enhance the film creating a realistic view for the
audience.
I would give this movie a five star rating. Do the Right Thing, is to the point and entertaining with a serious view of the world. There are no absolute

What Is The Theme Of Do The Right Thing
Do the Right Thing was filmed in the 80's which is a new movie I have watched from those years. Spike Lee did a delightful job at showing portrayal
of cultures, stenotypes, and racial issues in America. Do the Right Thing reflects what all races are dealing with in their lives. Therefore, throughout the
movie, hip–hop culture dominates the setting as Raheem walks around with his loud music playing on the boombox. I think he should not have been
a target to others because he was only living his life freely but in his own style. Several of my friends often had the same problem, who also are being
harassed by others, because of their different lifestyle. When seeing this film. I found that Spike Lee puts an accentuation on the delicacy of a group

Analysis Of Do The Right Thing By Spike Lee
"Do the Right Thing"
The creative yet simplistic aggression in the movie "Do the Right Thing" lends itself a strength that is necessary in tackling controversial issues such
as racial prejudice. Spike Lee, a known genius in the art of film directing, eloquently shaped the story so that the audience is able to see the dynamics
of a multi–racial community without holding any bars. Lee advocated for a society that is more open to constructive conversations about social
embargos. This movie was a daring platform that shows just how distorted ones opinions can be when clouded with personal and emotional interests.
This paper aims to dissect the movie and how Lee skillfully crafted the movie "Do the Right Thing" in the light of social dysfunctions. Additionally,
this paper will also highlight different techniques that paved the way for a firm delivery of the film's message. Lastly, a careful analysis of the film
will specify how the power of films can become instruments of social revolution and progress.
THE DIRECTOR'S CRAFT
"Do the Right Thing" tackles racism head on through the lens of different characters. The title sequence effectively set the tone of the film as it played
the film's leitmotif–Fight the Power by Public Enemy. It resembles the opening to The Cosby Show that had the protagonist "The Huckstables"
dancing in the title sequence. In the show mentioned, Cosby comes off as fake whereas the movie featured Tina with a deep expression of raw anger.

of the 20 "D" Batteries reflects the movie and the scene because it betrays the ethnic and racial tensions between each race and the cross–cultural

The Right Thing Essay

  • 1. The Right Thing Essay "Doing the right thing" is can be based upon a number of different factors. First, there is generally a sense of what is absolute goodness. These are the absolute moral standards by which we should live our lives, given to us either either by a higher power or our cultural environment. In Christianity, for instance, this is expressed in the Ten Commandments absolute ethical laws divined by God, also shared by other major religions. In secular society, it is the rule of law, the consensus of the majority of society on the regulations by which that society should be governed. Balanced against this sense of absolute goodness is relative goodness. Relative goodness is still a moral rightness but dependent on a situation still agreed...show more content... For every act of conformity to a social good there is an opposing act redefining what is " the right thing." We envy people who make a lot of money, yet we despise greed. However, within the context of the group in which the money–driven work, greed is good. We may frown on selfish wealth, yet on Wall Street that obsessiveness is good. Moreover, greed may actually be doing good for others increasing income for other's retirement, college tuition. Again, what is the " right thing" becomes subject to context. It is right to be competitive but not to cheat towards that end. We are encouraged to make "A's" in school, but not to do so in a dishonorable way. We should care about others, but also teach them to be independent. We should work within the rules, yet be our own person. A " bad" person may be forgiven if he or she has redeemed themselves or shown remorse for the act they have commited. Then consciousness of doing the wrong thing becomes important. Those who don't show remorse we still condemn. We can forgive those who don't know what's wrong. In fact, forgiveness is a good thing. In general, it is important to obey certain standards of goodness in society both for the greater good and to keep society from self–destructing. We praise charity as an act of giving to others less fortunate, also providing for the greater Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Do The Right Thing? Do The Right Thing (1989) is a classic film written, produced, and directed by Spike Lee. The focus on the movie is set on racial issues, and the entire movie takes place on the hottest day of the year in the Bed–Stuy section of Brooklyn. Lee does an incredible job demonstrating the tautness between the races on the block specifically among the African American race and American Italian race. Lee's use of symbolism among the characters, mise–en–scene, and shot composition in his film Do The Right Thing from beginning to end illustrates the struggle between peace and conflict. During the time this film first came out there was many racial tensions going on in America. Primarily in the blocks of New York. In this film Lee addresses these racial issues by creating a film that takes place in one entire day on the block where protagonist, Mookie, lives and works as a pizza delivery boy for Sal, an Italian American pizza owner in the block that is populated by mostly blacks. Lee's symbolism among characters is absolutely incredible from start to finish. The beginning of the film is started with music by Public Enemy "Fight The Power" where we see a young female (Rosie Perez) dancing, and at one point with a boxing outfit. This demonstrates an aggressive feel right off the bat, while the next scene takes place over at LOVE FM, a radio station ran by Mister Senor Love Daddy who is waking up the town and warning them about the high temperatures of that summer day. Right away Lee Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Do The Right Thing : Pop Culture Do the Right Thing: Pop Culture at its Best When we think of pop culture, especially in movies we think of celebrities, fashion, and tag lines. While Do the Right Thing (DTRT) by Spike Lee has maybe one of those, but its powerful themes, characters and presentation turned it into one of the most notable films ever. It heavily employs the interactionist approach by showing different cultures interacting with one another, and making major points of their own stereotypical racial biases, bigotry and degrees of discrimination, as well as the initial signs of gentrification which culminate into series of ever intensifying events that forever change the Brooklyn neighborhood of Bedford–Stuyvesant (Bed–Sty). DTRT utilizes metaphor of heat and pop culture themes of music, fashion and racial conflict, to address real social, economic, institutional and political inequities that still plague our society today. DTRT chronicles one of the hottest days on record in the infamous Bed–Sty, from its simmering beginnings to its violent end. It uses a deliberate cinematography style where actors to speak directly into the camera, and are framed within certain angles to depict their position within the dialogue (i.e. one character is shot from below to signify that he is above the situation or person he is talking to). While the characters can be seen as stereotypical, they are in fact significantly concrete and a reflection of many in reality. They are strong vehicles for Lee to address how Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Do The Right Thing Themes As I sat in class to watch Spike Lee's "Do the Right Thing", I noticed that a 20 year old film could convey such overwhelmingly real, modern social viewpoints. Many of the themes portrayed in "Do the Right Thing" which pave the way to the inescapable disarray of the movie that are issues which we confront today. Bedford–Stuyvesant or better known as Bed–Stuy, this Brooklyn neighborhood has gradually been the objective of gentrification since the mid 90s. Hip hop fans realize that Bed–Stuy is home to some of the most illustrious and well known artists like Jay Z, Notorious B.I.G., Mos Def, Lil' Kim, actor–comedian Tracy Morgan, thus some more. • 5. Do The Right Thing Let Us Learn Just imagine a world without people being taught, that is not being taught to tie your shoes at the age of three or four. Now imagine "Do The Right Thing", being played for high school students across the United States. We teach our teach our children how to tie there shoes, so why play a movie that brings you through various types of motions; emotionally, logically, and historically. As far as the artistic aspect; the points that are trying to be elaborated on coincide with the camera and the way it is maneuvered. In this essay, I will reiterate what I saw, that told a memorizing story that only you should see for yourself, and at the same time...show more content... The point throughout this film was to make a impression on us, artistically. Not only did a artistic aspect pop up in my mind, but as stated earlier a emotional affect was brought to my attention. The first being Radio, who was seen throughout the movie; as a macho sort of figure, Radio's love for his radio is shown as a object of attention
  • 6. throughout the movie and even when Radio is killed by police officers. Radio's goal was to make a point, Sal the owner of the pizzeria was going to equalize his pizzeria or else. Well unfortunately this or else moment came to a screeching halt due to the cops. Radio, was taken forcibly by the cops and killed. This moment through the film made me gasp, with the way the camera angled you could feel the intensity. Throughout high school, which needless to point out was half a decade ago, I remember being taught history, but one thing was forgotten; Do The Right Thing, I say this because this movie depicts everything that should be taught in the education system from racism to artistic points. What do I mean by historical information? Well during the 1800's and so fourth Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Do The Right Thing? Do the Right Thing The first review that I found was in the New York Times and was written by Vincent Canby. Canby starts his review by quoting Mr. Senor Love Daddy who is "doing the nasty to your ears, playing the platters that matter" and explains that this movie takes place on the hottest day of the summer. "Do the Right Thing" stars Spike Lee, who is able to direct and star in this movie "without compromising his position as an aggressively outspoken advocate of black rights." The whole story of this movie takes place within a 24–hour period, on the hottest day of the year. During this time "tempers fray, kidding turns mean, long–hidden bigotry becomes manifested and violence explodes in and around Sal's Famous Pizzeria." Canby makes sure to make Lee's opinion heard when he talks about how this explosion of emotions was in no way a jab at a group of whites attacking a group of blacks who had "invaded their territory." Lee is described as having a big screen presence even though he is so small and thin. The move as a whole is described as being full of "character, color, incident and music." Canby spends a large part of this review talking about how Lee present controversial topics in both his movie and in real life. Lee showed up to the screening of this moving in a Malcolm X t–shirt and made it clear that the day this movie was shown, was the day that would have been Malcolm's 64th birthday. Lee was also quoted saying that it is not the job of moviemakers these Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Ethics- Do the Right Thing 1.Spike Lee intended us to conclude that violence is not an answer for any problems. In this case, the character, Da Mayor, would be a classic example of how problems should have been solved. He could have intended us to conclude that by resorting to violence in any situation, the consequences that we would have to face will not be very favourable and it could lead to more problems instead of solving the current situation. It is always better to nip the problem from the bud, instead of letting it grow and allowing it to torment everyone. 2.In moral subjectivism context, Mookie did the right thing, as he was enraged by the death of, Radio Raheem, a fellow black man, and so did everybody else. However in this case, everybody was...show more content... People in this neighbourhood were more comfortable within their own comfort zone and each ethnicity always felt superior to the other, which is a reason for constant friction between them. 5.Yes, there can be different moral rules for different ethnic and cultural group. Different ethnic and cultural groups are from different roots and upbringing. Therefore it is natural for each group to have their own set of rules and belief. The trick is to accept each and other's differences and learn to respect and live along with it, instead of disrespecting and discriminating. However amidst all these, there can be a universal moral code among everyone, to allow everybody to have a common ground to mingle with. 6.In this movie, Spike Lee does present some of his characters as stereotypes. For example, Pino in this movie, is a staunch Italian who dislikes living in the neighbourhood where the majority are blacks. He cannot bring himself to embrace the blacks and their way of life in the neighbourhood. Most of his characters are usually stereotypical against other ethnicity in the neighbourhood. However he does have characters, such as Da Mayor, who embraces and accepts everybody as they are. Spike Lee could have presented his characters in such a manner to portray to the general public, the reality of living in a multicultural neighbourhood. He might Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Essay On Doing The Right Thing "Never be afraid to do what's right; especially if the wellbeing of a person or animal is at stake, society's punishments are small compared to the wounds we inflict on our souls when we look the other way." Sometimes people can't find the courage to do the right thing in hard situations. This relates to the text "Doing the right thing", "Thank You, Ma'am" and "The Road Not Taken" because it is evident that the persona in these excerpts found the courage to do the right thing. To begin, people can get their courage from many different things. In Doing the Right Thing" by Rick Reilly, is about When four division three college football players go inside of Buddy's Small Lots, a catch all chain store to buy some supplies. When they ...show more content... The poem is talking about how the narrator has two roads in front of him which are two options and he has to pick one. "Two roads diverged in a wood, and I–I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference." When the author says this this is him doing the right thing because he took the road he wanted to take and not the road somebody else wanted the narrator to take. This also relates to him having courage because the poem also says "Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that passing there Had worn them really about the same," This is the character/narrator thinking of the pros and cons about which one would have a better future for him. Once he found the one he thought was right for him is when he had fully found his courage to take the road he did. Which was the road less traveled by. So this is how the person in "The Road Not Taken" found the courage to do the right thing. Ultimately, having courage to do the right thing can be given from one person to another, like in the excerpt "Thank You Ma'am", which is a story about a young man named Roger, who tries to steal a old womans (Mrs.Jones) purse. He ends up failing to take the purse and Mrs.James (Old woman) takes him to her house to clean him us, and teach him right from wrong. Mrs.Jones did the right thing by taking him in to let him wash his face, and feed him. As the excerpt Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Themes Of Do The Right Thing The film Do the Right Thing is a very relevant on issues of race. The film shows how there is tension between all races. The film shows racial tension between the communities in the hottest day of the year. The heat is a theme in the film. Heat in general gets people on edge and raises tension. The film relates to W.E.B. Dubois work "The Soul of Black Folk." Dubois (1903) work includes the concepts of the veil and double consciousness. The African Americans in the film deal with the idea of a veil. Mookie the protagonist deals with the idea of double consciousness. In Dubois (1903) "The Soul of Black Folk" the ideas of double consciousness and the veil affect blacks. A veil is a piece of clothing that conceals a face. The veil is figurative and is presented in the film through Buggin outs questions Sal of the wall of fame. Even though it's Sal's pizzeria Buggin out raises a great point. Buggin out tells Sal that the clientele he attracts are black folk. While black folk are the majority of the customers they should have a say on the wall of fame. The veil is to conceal the importance of blacks. To Sal and his sons blacks are not important enough to put on the wall. The community is diverse but Sal's son Pino view blacks with hate and resentment. Pino views blacks as apes and animals not people. Another example of the veil can be the conversation Mookie has with Pino. Mookie criticizes Pino for constantly critiquing blacks and questions his favorite entertainers. Pino's Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. Courage To Do The Right Thing Essay Have you ever had to have the courage to do the right thing? In these articles, the characters had to have the courage to the right thing. In the issues, the characters have to have the courage to make their own decisions and do the right thing. I can conclude that in all the issues they have to have the courage to do the right thing. In "Doing the right thing" they have courage because of their families, in "The Road Not Taken" the character has the courage to do the right thing because he wants to make his own decision. In "Thankyou Ma'am" the character has the courage to do the right thing because she has done things she wasn't proud of. He also wanted to give the other path a chance because it was less traveled on. The other path could have been easy but had ended up getting harder along the way. And if he took that path he would feel less rewarded and that he took the easy way out. Since he took the less traveled path it could have been hard but he would feel more rewarded and ended with better results. In the short story "Thankyou Ma'am by Langston Hughes, the character, Mrs. Jones had the courage to do the right thing because she had done things she wasn't proud of, so she put herself in other's shoes. When a boy tried to steal her purse she grabbed him and took him back to her house to wash his face and get food. In the article, The author says, "I have done things, too, which I would not tell you, son–neither tell God, if he didn't already know." Mrs. JOnes has done things she was not proud of. She might have lived a childhood where she wasn't wealthy enough to afford certain things she needed and wanted. So when they boy, Roger tried to steal her purse she taught him a lesson and brought him back to her house to wash his face comb his hair and feed him dinner. She also gave him $10 to buy blue suede shoes. From all of these issues, the characters have to have a find a way to have the courage and do the right thing. For example, Sal's pizzeria which is owned by an Italian American has pictures of famous Italian Americans on the wall and plays Italian music. One character named Buggin Out is always upset. Bugging out hates the fact that there are no black people pictures on the wall especially since the pizzeria is in a black neighborhood. His perspective represents the people in the African American community that always protest, but usually don't work to improve the community. The Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. Do The Right Thing Spike Lee's movie "Do the Right Thing" portrays a time in American history when the post–civil rights movement was still fresh in everyone's mind. It is 1989, and Martin Luther King Jr and Malcolm X have placed their stamp on the country. While MLK preached for peace, Malcom X wanted the people to fight back in self–defense. This movie portrays these two views side by side through several different scenes. The movie is set in the black community of Bedford–Stuyevesant on the hottest day of the year. The neighborhood DJ Love Daddy opens the stage, telling everyone to "wake up", and that it will be a hot, hot day. The temperature seems to be a frequently talked about subject in the beginning of the film, suggesting that something is bound to happen as heat symbolizes anger and violence. There are many little instances of racial problems that lead up to the big finale, proving that, while the civil rights movement had ended, race was still and still is a part of American culture. Mookie, the film's main character, works at Sal's pizzeria with Sal, Pino, and Vito. While this is a mainlyAfrican American neighborhood, Sal and his family are "American Italians". They take great pride in this, and even have a wall of fame commemorating their heritage. Buggin Out sees this wall and takes offense to it. He asks Sal "Why are there no brothers on the wall?" since they live in a mainly black community. Sal replies that it is his business, and he decides who goes up on the wall. Lee adds more of a yellow shade to the paper stand and the newspapers themselves, which helps us to better grasp that it is a hot summer day. There are many colors incorporated – yellow, red and orange are used vividly throughout the scene. The colors allow us to associate with the weather and certain emotions that are being felt by some of the characters. During the introduction of the scene, Lee uses different camera angles and sound to place a stronger focus on the water and refreshments in this scene to show emphasis on the temperature. We are shown a close up camera angle of a girl submerging her face in water to cool herself off and a side view of another person avoiding the heat by standing directly under a showerhead as the water slowly pours out. By slowing down both clips, Lee makes us remember the feeling of the cold water on a hot summer day. We are also taken to a street where all the neighbor kids are playing and the excitement that they feel when all the water starts spraying out of the fire hydrant is vividly displayed. The camera rises and shows us how much everyone enjoying the water and having fun. These angles help the audience share the feeling with the characters and remember hot days in the summer that they have experienced. Sound is another important aspect of the scene. • 15. Essay about Do The Right Thing "DO THE RIGHT THING" Spike Lee's movie Do the Right Thing is an excellent portrayal of what life was and is most certainly like in some areas of New York City and across the United States of America. His movie tells the story of Mookie an African American pizza deliveryman, trying to make a living to support his son and girlfriend. He works for Sal and his two sons Vito and Pino who hold completely opposite attitudes when it comes to race. Then there is Radio Raheem who organizes a boycott at Sal's pizza parlor because of the lack of racial diversity on their wall of fame. As the movie begins you become well aware of the fact that the people who...show more content... Sal should have realized that in order to keep his business alive he would have to not only tolerate but learn to respect his customers. Since it seemed in the movie that the area had an invasion of African Americans and Sal along with his sons were annoyed by that fact. It was almost as if it were a resistance towards them, to make them realize who's territory they were on. The tension in this film eventually built up to the point of senseless violence against each other. This just proves that there is no room for accommodation and cooperation of any kind in the near future. It would work best if all groups could come to a mutual understanding of each other and except the fact that they must learn to live in peace and as neighbors. If I were a film critic I would give this film four and a half stars. It was well made and the actors were excellent. Although I have little to no experience living in a situation such as the one in the movie, I feel as though the lifestyle of these particular characters were portrayed truthfully. It was a culture shock to me, and the fact that it was most likely taken from real life is amazing in my mind. This movie not only made me think about the world as a whole but made me realize how incredibly lucky I am to have grown up in the environment in which I have lived in my entire life. • 17. Do The Right Thing Essay Director and actor Spike Lee presents his "truth" about race relations in his movie Do the Right Thing. The film exhibits the spectacle of black discrimination and racial altercations. Through serious, angry, and loud sounds, Lee stays true to the ethnicity of his characters, all of which reflect their own individualism. Lee uses insulting diction and intense scenes to show how severe racism can lead to violence. The disturbing scene where different nationalities badger their opinions on each other shows poor communication and horrible stereotyping. This is an example of antilocution. • 18. What Is The Theme Of Do The Right Thing Do the Right Thing was filmed in the 80's which is a new movie I have watched from those years. Spike Lee did a delightful job at showing portrayal of cultures, stenotypes, and racial issues in America. Do the Right Thing reflects what all races are dealing with in their lives. Therefore, throughout the movie, hip–hop culture dominates the setting as Raheem walks around with his loud music playing on the boombox. I think he should not have been a target to others because he was only living his life freely but in his own style. Several of my friends often had the same problem, who also are being harassed by others, because of their different lifestyle. When seeing this film. I found that Spike Lee puts an accentuation on the delicacy of a group Get more content on HelpWriting.net

The scene of the 20 "D" Batteries reflects the movie and the scene because it betrays the ethnic and racial tensions between each race and the cross–cultural communication between them.
