Education in it’s general sense is a form of learning in which the knowledge, skills and habits of
a group of are transferred from one generation to the next through teaching, training, or
research
3. Culture
The Latin word “CULTURA” means ‘to cultivate’ or cultivating the mind. Culture is a word for
people’s ‘ way of life’, meaning the way they do things. Different groups of people may have
different cultures.

◦ The main function of the educational system is to transmit the culture heritage to the new
generations.

◦ It must create a favourable attitude in them for positive changes in life
◦ New pattern of culture should be evolved so as to ensure the good of all rather than the

pupils and teachers to carry on their experiments with new ideas

7. Transmission of culture
◦ The function of education is to mould the individual in the matrix of society, in accordance
with it’s customs and traditions
◦ Durkheim has said, education is the influence exercised by adult generation on those that are
not yet ready for social life.
◦ Its object is to arouse and to develop in the child a certain number of physical, intellectual and
moral states which are demanded of him by both the political society as a whole and the
special MILIEU for which he is specifically destined.

Education and culture are intimately and integrally connected. The cultural pattern of
a country conditions it’s educational pattern. Both culture and education play an
equally significant role in helping the individual in making his proper modification in
society
