Critical Controls
The Critical Controls for conducting Hot Work are:
• Identify and Control ignition sources
• Confirm that flammable materials have been removed or isolated
• Confirm that the atmosphere has been tested
• Confirm that vapors and gases have been purged from lines.
• Obtain authorization to conduct Hot Work.
• Continually monitor the area for gases.
Scope of Work
The scope of work must clearly describe:
• The type of hot work to be performed
• The work location
Permit Requirements
Prior to the start of work, permit requirements must:
• Be communicated to all affected persons, including those that arrive after work has begun
• Account for interactions with other work permits such as Confined Space
• Define methods for revalidation if needed
Hazard Control/Mitigation
Confirm mitigation for all hazards identified on the permit prior to the start of work and as needed throughout the
task. Ensure that fire prevention measures are in place before conducting any type of hot work.
Smoking Areas
• Identify designated smoking areas
• Do not smoke in unauthorized areas, this includes the use of e-cigarettes as well.
Changing Conditions
When conditions and/or work scope change:
• Stop the work
• Reassess the hazards
• Revise the permit as necessary
• Confirm/reconfirm original and any additional hazard mitigation measures
