General Requirements
Fit for Duty is about helping people, building capacity, and setting up workers for the safe execution of work.
Employees should be able to perform their job duties in a safe, appropriate, and effective manner free from
adverse effects of physical, mental, or emotional and personal problems.
Physical Requirements
Pre-Employment Testing (Physical/Medical Suitability)
Employees shall undergo testing to ensure that they are physically capable of performing their job functions. A
medical evaluation and physical evaluation are required in the hiring process.
Safe Work Requirements (Skills & Knowledge)
Employees must have the required skills to be able to perform their task safely and efficiently. Safe Work Practices
must be followed and include the 11 Life Saving Rules listed in this document.
Physiological Fitness
Physiological refers to how the body functions and includes fatigue and the use of alcohol and drugs.
Fatigue is defined as a state of reduced mental and physical alertness or functioning caused by sleep disruption or
deprivation because of extended work hours, insufficient sleep, or the effects of sleep disorders, medical
conditions, or pharmaceuticals, which reduce sleep or increase drowsiness.
Employees shall not be under the influence of illegal drugs or alcohol at any time while at work. Employees are
expected to inform their supervisor(s) if they are taking medically prescribed prescription drugs that may hinder
their ability to perform their job functions.
Psychological Fitness
Psychological relates to the state of the mind, including emotional well-being. These aspects are often less
definitive, but can be observed by everyone and include mental illness, stress, distraction, violence and
harassment, respectful workplaces, executive functioning, etc.
Reporting
If at any time an employee notices that someone may not be fit for duty, they should report it to their supervisor
immediately.
