The document provides instructions for an in-class Kahoot quiz on the reading "Hope in the Dark" and paper 4. Students are told to get into teams to participate in the Kahoot game for participation points. The document also discusses participation grades and scoring to date. Finally, it instructs students to find at least three credible sources in the library databases to use for paper 4 and post their works cited list by noon for extra participation points. Homework is to consider a counterargument and alternative solution for their paper.
2. Kahoot:
Hope in the Dark + Paper 4 + Library Research
Get into teams—up to FOUR people
in a team.
Someone on your team must have a
smart phone or laptop.
You will need a good view of the
projection screen at the front.
Everyone on your team will receive
the (adjusted) points your team
scores as participation.

3. Participation Check-in: End of Week 10
Your final participation grade will be

However many points you earn will
be normed onto a 100 point scale
(and then assigned the corresponding
letter grade).
How do you get participation?
Quizzes (incl. Kahoot).
Participation in class discussion
Other various (Global Issues, draft
peer review).
Remaining sources of partic this
quarter:
Extra partic credit today
Wed. Kahoot
Wed. class discussion
Monday draft peer review
Through Week 6:
Range: 88-172 points
Mean: 123
Standard Deviation: 20
If I had to turn these into letter
grades, I would do so as follows:
Score Letter Grade
132+ A(10)
110-131 B (9)
<109 C(7)
4. Library Research Task
For Paper 4, you need THREE
credible sources.
Your sources can be books, articles
from scholarly journals, credible
websites, or articles from popular
magazines or newspapers, such as
Time, National Geographic, or the
LA Times.
I suggest you use the De Anza
Library website (and their
databases) to find these.
If you use other methods and end
up using a sketchy source, I will
penalize you for it in your paper
grade.
Don’t leave today until you’ve
found at least three useful sources.
You might want sources to:
Help you define your problem or
establish its seriousness: statistics,
examples, testimony.
Describe the causes or consequences
of your problem.
Provide a model for your solution.
Has this been tried before? How did it
go?
Provide alternative solutions.
When you’ve found your three
sources, arrange them into an
accurately formatted Works Cited
(alphabetical please!) and post them
as P4 WORKS CITED on Canvas.
If you post before noon, you will
receive up to 15 participation
points.
Homework for Wednesday:
Discussion 25
1. What is one
counterargument that you
will use in your paper and
how will you respond to it?
2. What is an alternative
solution that you will
describe in your paper and
why is it not as good as
your preferred solution?
