Objectives
• Define System Safety Engineering (SSE) and
Human Systems Integration (HSI)
• Explore the Educational Diversity within
System Safety and HSI
• Discuss how Education Diversity impacts you

5. 5
What is SSE and HSI?
System Safety Engineering
Employs specialized
knowledge and skills in
applying scientific and
engineering principles to
identify and eliminate system
hazards or reduce the
associated risk when hazards
cannot be eliminated.
Human Systems Integration
Focuses attention on the
human part of the system by
integrating and inserting
manpower, personnel, training,
human factors engineering,
environment, safety
occupational health hazards,
and personnel survivability to
the acquisition process.

Why Diversity?
“Diversity: the art of thinking
independently together.”
Malcolm Forbes
Educational Diversity promotes holistic solutions
to System Safety and HSI problems in the Navy
and Marine Corps by incorporating creative
approaches to problem solving.

What Happened?
Navy Destroyer Damaged by Test Missile Explosion
• Missile explodes shortly after it
was launched during a planned test
exercise off the coast of Virginia.
• USS THE SULLIVANS (DDG 68)
suffered minor damage to its port
side after the test missile
malfunctioned.

What does this mean for you?
• Your point of view matters
• You can tailor your knowledge and skills to
align with the goals of the organization
• Do NOT be limited by traditional views of your
degree
