THE SCRATCH‐B‐GONE PROCESS
Though stainless steel is a strong and durable metal its finish is quite fragile.
Machine etched drums or wheels of varying grit textures create its finish. A
surface abrasion or scratch actually is an opposing cross pattern to the grain’s
original direction. Scratch‐B‐Gone literally erases cross patterns by
establishing a straight linear pattern (called “re‐graining”) over the crossed
patterns while blending the uprooted particles back to the surface.

SECTION 1 – BEFORE YOU BEGIN
While Scratch‐B‐Gone successfully removes blemishes, abrasions, stains and
scratches on genuine brushed (or satin) stainless steel it PERMANENTLY
damages protective coatings and finishes. DO NOT USE SCRATCH‐B‐GONE on
any stainless steel surface that is mirrored or polished, and/or has a
manufacturer‐applied imitation film or clear coat, lettering, decal, or insignia.
NOTE: Scratch‐B‐Gone will not remove dents and dings on any metal surface.
STOP! ENSURE SURFACE IS NOT COATED
WARNING: DO NOT USE Scratch‐B‐Gone on any stainless steel surface known to
have a clear coat, imitation film or synthetic finish. Always use the Tru‐Metal Test
Strip provided in this kit BEFORE restoring any surface.
Some appliances have coatings on doors, trims and handles to reduce smudges,
tarnishes and discoloration (e.g., refrigerators, dishwashers, ranges, microwaves).
Contact the product manufacturer before using Scratch‐B‐Gone on any surface.

cooktops test positive for genuine stainless steel using the Tru‐Metal Test Strip. Its
surface however has nickel plating that Scratch‐B‐Gone will damage. Most Electrolux
brand name appliances have coatings except for “Classic”, “Electrolux” & “Icon”.
STOP! TEST THE SURFACE TO BE RESTORED
• Review information above to confirm Scratch‐B‐Gone can safely be used on the
surface to be restored.
• If you’re still unsure whether the surface is non‐coated brushed/satin stainless
steel, test it with the Tru‐Metal Test Strip™ included in the kit.
• The Tru‐Metal Test Strip is our proprietary cloth that helps determine if a
stainless steel surface has an imitation film, or protective coating or finish.
• On a hidden section of the surface to be restored (e.g., inside oven panel; side
of refrigerator door) use a section of the test strip to lightly rub surface in the
direction of the grain. See section, Understand Grain Patterns.
• If test strip does NOT turn gray or black, STOP. THE SURFACE MAY BE COATED.

• If the test strip turns gray or black, the surface is more than likely not coated
and is real exposed metal. Ensure you have thoroughly read Section 1 in its
entirety before proceeding to Section 2.
STOP! UNDERSTAND GRAIN PATTERNS BEFORE RESTORING SURFACE
Stainless steel finishes have both a direction and a pattern. The direction of a
finish is either vertical (up/down) or horizontal (left/right). During restoration
always guide your pad in the direction of the finish.
The pattern of a finish is either linear (long/continuous) or distressed (short/
choppy). Damage to a linear finish can be isolated and thus, easy to restore.
CAUTION: Distressed patterns, regardless of direction, can be difficult to repair
and usually require re‐graining of the entire stainless steel surface. Distressed
patterns are typically found on refrigerator and dishwasher doors. Contact our
technicians at 888.889.9876 BEFORE attempting to restore a distressed finish.
DO NOT SUBSTITUTE PROPRIETARY LUBRICANT OR PADS
At the heart of Scratch‐B‐Gone is our proprietary lubricant, ULTRA SHINE™ to
oxidize the surface by returning loose metal that was uprooted during re‐
graining. ULTRA SHINE – along with our proprietary metal‐cutting pads – makes
quick and thorough restorations possible, even with deep scratches and gouges.
DO NOT SUBSTITUTE ULTRA SHINE or any pad contained in this kit. ULTRA

The first pad to use for restoration is the pad listed adjacent to the surface
damage type. If damage is a deep scratch or gouge, begin restoration with the 1”
x 6” Coarse Finger Strip.

2. • The Scratch‐B‐Gone process etches new scratches over cross‐pattern
scratches. The final restoration stage blends the restored area to
surrounding areas and returns the surface to like‐new condition.
• Always keep pad strokes going in a straight line in direction of surface
grain. Strokes going against grain – or off the grain – will result in
unwanted scratches and an unsightly finish.
• Start with light even pressure and increase as needed.
• Check results every 8‐10 strokes by wiping surface with a clean dry
portion of a micro‐fiber cloth.
• DO NOT overuse the Gray Finishing Pad. Doing so may result in a
burnished area, which is shiny in appearance.
• DO NOT overuse ULTRA SHINE. A little goes a long way.
• Finish every restoration with Final Surface Blending (Section 3).
• For long linear (vertical) grains (as sometimes seen on a refrigerator or
dishwasher), use two hands and rotate grip handle to a horizontal
position. This helps steady your strokes to follow a straight line.
SECTION 2 – PREPARATION
CAUTION: Proceed only if you are sure the surface area to be restored is non‐
coated brushed or satin stainless steel, and that you understand the
importance of knowing grain patterns and direction.
PREPARE RESTORATION AREA: Use painter’s tape to seal off all decorative logos,
letters, decals, insignias, intersecting grains, countertops or frames that are in
close proximity to the restoration area.
ATTACH PAD TO GRIP HANDLE: Place chosen pad on a clean flat surface (review
chart, Pad Abrasiveness and Usage. [Do not use grip handle with 1” x 6” Coarse
Finger Strip] Place grip handle in middle of pad. Pull up one of the two clip levers
to open side clamps. Tuck one end of pad under clamps. Slowly and carefully
lower clip lever to lock pad securely into place. (CAUTION: KEEP FINGERS AWAY
FROM CLAMPS. Letting go of clip lever prematurely may result in injury.) Slowly
release clamp to lock position. Repeat on other side of handle. Pad is secured
when stretched tightly along grip base. The Grip handle can be used horizontally
or vertically as long as your pad strokes follow the direction of the grain.
USING ULTRA SHINE: Massage packet to mix its contents. Cut off corner tab
where shown. Apply small amount of ULTRA SHINE to pad in an “S” pattern.
Keep just enough ULTRA SHINE on pad to maintain cutting effectiveness during
restoration process. ULTRA SHINE leaves surfaces dry to the touch upon wiping.
Do not use ULTRA SHINE on 1” x 6” Finger Strip. Store any unused ULTRA SHINE
in its original packet by affixing tape to both sides of cut corner.
HELPFUL HINTS FOR BEST RESULTS
SECTION 3 – DIRECTIONS AND USE
BLEMISHES, ABRASIONS, SWIRLS, STAINS, LIGHT SCRATCHES
Read this section in its entirety before proceeding.
1) Attach Gray Finishing Pad securely to grip handle as noted in Section 2.
2) Apply small amount of ULTRA SHINE in an “S” pattern over pad.
3) Place pad onto surface and begin pad strokes in direction of grain. Use light
pressure and increase as needed for 8‐10 strokes. STOP.
4) Check your results by wiping the surface clean with micro‐fiber cloth in the
direction of the grain.
5) If evidence of the damage is still visible, repeat Steps 3‐4 above for only a few
more attempts, then STOP.
6) If damage is still visible, switch to the Brown Reconditioning Pad. Continue with
Steps 2‐4 above.
7) Continue until all traces of the original damage are gone, resulting in several re‐
etched lines going in the direction of the grain.
8) Proceed to Final Surface Blending.
Most blemishes, abrasions, swirls and stains (not caught by a fingernail) will
disappear with 8‐10 strokes of the Gray Finishing Pad.
Most scratches not caught by a fingernail will disappear with 2‐3 attempts of using
the Brown Reconditioning Pad. If damage is still visible after that, set aside the pads
and proceed to next section, Deep Scratches and Gouges.
CAUTION: Overusing the Gray Finishing Pad can cause burnishing, characterized by a
shiny surface. If this occurs, switch to the Brown Reconditioning Pad to re‐etch the
grain pattern. Then go to Final Surface Blending.
DEEP SCRATCHES AND GOUGES
Read this section in its entirety before proceeding.
1) Begin this restoration process by using the 1” x 6” Finger Strip.
2) Do not place any ULTRA SHINE on strip or surface area.
3) Place strip over tip of index finger and hold in place with free hand, as seen on
the instructional DVD.
4) Using the finger strip dry rub the scratch following the grain direction.
5) Continue for 8‐10 strokes using increased pressure as needed then STOP.
6) Inspect area by wiping it clean with a micro‐fiber cloth in the grain direction.
7) For deep gouges it may be necessary to apply additional pressure for a longer
period of time. You are cutting a new grain channel.
8) Repeat Steps 3‐6 until scratch is no longer caught by a fingernail.
9) Affix the Burgundy Coarse Foam‐backed Pad to grip handle with foam side
facing bottom of grip handle.
10) Apply ULTRA SHINE to the coarse side of the pad as directed above
11) Place pad onto surface and begin pad strokes in the direction of the grain. Use
light pressure and increase as needed for 8‐10 strokes. STOP.
12) Check results by wiping the surface clean with a micro‐fiber cloth in the
direction of the grain.
13) Repeat until all visible traces of the scratch or gouge are gone.
14) At this stage, the restoration area should appear to have several newly
re‐etched scratches going in the direction of the grain. No visible signs of
the original cross‐pattern scratch should exist.
15) Proceed to Final Surface Blending.
FINAL SURFACE BLENDING
The restoration area should now have several newly‐etched scratches going in
the direction of the grain. No visible signs should exist of the original damage.
It’s time now to blend the newly‐restored metal to its surrounding area.
Attach gray pad to grip handle and apply ULTRA SHINE as directed. Gradually
move pad back and forth going with the grain to an increasingly larger area
while decreasing pressure to a light touch. This properly blends the newly
reconditioned metal with the surrounding metal to erase the surface damage.
Inspect area every 8‐10 strokes then STOP. Wipe surface with micro‐fiber
cloth in grain direction. Repeat until you are satisfied with results. Some areas
may require larger adjacent areas be blended well to ensure a uniform look.
