OBJECTIVE: Develop and operate a large‐scale wind farm with a
maximum net capacity of up to 250 MW in southwest Kansas.
LOCATION: Finney County, 14 miles Southwest of Garden City, Kansas.
LAND DESCRIPTION: 7,000‐12,000 acres of continuous grasslands
and farmlands in the Township of Pierceville, Kansas. Land is one and
one half miles south of a 345KV line feeding the State of
Kansas, and smaller lines run across and near the property. Further
development of a 785KV line into Pierceville is projected for 2012‐13.
LAND OWNER: One land owner manages up to 10,000 acres;
Additional 2,000‐5,000 acres considered at adjoining property lines.
WIND DATA AND ANALYSIS:
• Estimated Net Capacity Factor: 38%
• NRELs Class Five (5) Wind Speed at 50 meters
• (M/S) 7.50‐8.00 ~ (MPH) 16.8‐17.9
• Wind Density: 500‐600
• Minimum Projected Turn Rate: 33%
• 3 Years Aerial Wind Data from Garden City Airport
PERMITS AND APPLICATIONS: Landowner easement agreements
secured; county and state permits initiated; interconnection
application to Southwest Power Pool initiated. Preliminary
engineering review completed by a leading turbine manufacturer.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT: Approvals/permits requested through
Kansas Department of Wildlife & Parks and Sierra Club. No major
impact expected to crucial wildlife habitats or threatened state‐listed species.
UTILITY MARKET & STATE SUPPORT: Initial discussions favorable with utility buyer, Sunflower Electric
Power Corporation. Additional prospects include Victory and Wheatland. Kansas is ranked #2 for wind
energy potential and state officials support the development of the Bar‐O‐Bar at multiple levels.
MANAGEMENT TEAM: Apache Group LLC retains three executives and additional support with working
experience on The Smoky Hills Wind Farm in Ellis and Lincoln Counties, Kansas.
