My structural conventions of horror trailer

The Crucifixion

Opening
 The first shot seen in The Crucifixion trailer is a high angle shot of a country showing
houses surrounded by a rural area. This shot creates a a relaxing mood because it
shows the beauty of nature and is gives the audience a chance to appreciate nature.
• After this shot a low angle shot of the sky is shown. The sky shows clouds. Below
the clouds show a sculpture of the cross which implies that the film is set in a Holy
land and the people live in a Christian country. This country could be Israel where
Christians populate.
• Next the trailer shows a wide of houses and a big garden with colourful flowers
and trees. This creates a harmonious tone to the film. This allows the audience to
appreciate nature and see the beauty of it.

Build up
 The next scene is a Build up showing an establishing shot of a church. Although it may look
like a place of worship we hear a loud female scream. As the audience we want to know
what is going on inside the church. The woman screaming sounds like she is in danger and
saw something that scared her. After this establishing shot we then see what is happening
inside the church. There are a group of men carrying a cross with a women tied up on it. As
the audience we can guess what these men are doing, they may be raping, killing or
torturing her.

4. z
Problem
 The problems start to develop once the next scenes hint the genre and establishes the story. In
the trailer news is shown on TV, reporting and showing a man being arrested. This immediately
tells us that the man has broken the law or is the suspect of a crime.
 Suddenly scenes are shown where people move their bodies abnormally. For example there is a
girl lying in her bed and she’s moves this way then another character opens the cover finding flies
crawling on her genitals.
 In the film there is a priest who hints the problems in the film relating to the genre. One way he
hints the problems is when he plays a tape of a girls voice saying “Whatever is inside of her is
challenging me too,” this implies that this thing could be a ghost or a spirit. Another way the priest
hints the problems the characters face in the film is by informing a young girl that “You need to be
careful,” as the audience we don’t know what he says that but this indicates that he is like a role
model to her. The girls is then curious and wants to find out what is going on around her that the
priest is warning her about. The priest also states that “Demons are real” and “Heaven and hell is
real” which reveals that there is a battle happening in the spiritual world. This also highlights
spiritual beliefs.

5. z Events
 As the trailer continues one of the events that happen in the trailer is where the main
character(a young girl) is in her bedroom, we then see a close up of the door opening and
closing while still locked on a door chain. The door opens 3 times, the third time a girl who
has demons in face appears and she screams. This implies that the spirits are after the
main character and is trying to get close to her through humans.
 After this shows a young girl in a hospital bed getting close to be poked in the eye with a
needle. This is ambiguous because we don’t know who is doing it and why.
 Towards the end of the trailer the priest and the young girl are seen in the same
environment where it is raining. The young girl is seen flying and lands on the ceiling
whereas the priest is seen with a bible which also then flies and lands on the ceiling. This
indicates that they are protected from the demons and their role is to defeat it. This is
followed by a small sculpture of the cross breaking into pieces once it lands on the floor.
This indicates the battle between the good and bad spirits and implies that the good
spirits may be loosing.
 As the trailer is coming to an end and more events are happening, the priest is seen
holding a small sculpture of a cross forward and praying for the spirit to come out of
another young girl. After that 2 men hold the same girl down on the floor while the pastor
prays. This highlights that they are all determined to win this battle and remove all bad
spirits amongst people.
