Universal Design for Learning (UDL) originated from concepts in architecture aiming for equal access facilities and was transferred to education. UDL is grounded in brain research showing learning connects to three networks - recognition, strategic, and affective. UDL's goal is to raise awareness of each learner's uniqueness and accommodate differences to maximize all learner progress. UDL supports recognition, strategic, and affective learning through presenting information flexibly, expressing knowledge flexibly, and engaging learners flexibly. UDL guides teachers to set clear goals, individualize instruction, and assess progress.
