2. Cripps Mission 1942
Cripps Mission came in 1942 & recognized the
demand that.. a constitution to be framed by an
elected constituent assembly.
• Cripps proposal were rejected by Indians.
• Because it proposed that Indian constituent
assembly will be framed after 2nd world war
ended. (Gandhi ji referred it as post dated
cheque.)
• The labour party came into power in England.
The Labour Govt. was more sympathetic towards
India and wanted to solve the Indian problem
with this end in view the cabinet mission was
send to India.

3. Cabinet Mission, 1946 – Formation
of Constituent Assembly
The cabinet Mission came into India on 4th March
1946. It consisted of 3 British members – Lord Pethic
Lawrence, Sir Stafford Cripps, Mr. A. V. Alexander.
The Cabinet Mission provided for an indirectly
elected and Nominated members for constituent
assembly.
The Cabinet Mission proposed The Constituent
Assembly consisted of total 389 members. (One
member per one lakh population)
From which – 292 to be elected from Provinces, 93
to be nominated from princely states and 4 to be
nominated from chief commissioner areas (Delhi,
4. Joint Constituent Assembly for India &
Pakistan
• The 1st meeting of the constituent assembly was held on
Dec 9, 1946.
• But it was boycotted by Muslim League.
• Muslim League demanded a separate assembly for
Pakistan.
•On 26th July 1947 – Governor General Lord
Mountbatten announced the setting of a separate
constituent assembly for Pakistan.
•On 15 Aug 1947 India was divided and Pakistan
Became Independent State.

5. After division of India 90 members seats of
constituent assembly went into Pakistan.
Rest 299 (389-90) members prepared Indian
Constitution.
Out of 299 members,15 were women members
and Begam Aizaz Rasul was only one muslim
woman member.
The 1st meeting of the assembly was held on 9th Dec
1946 (In the chair of Sachinand Sinha).
On 11th Dec , Dr. Rajendra Prasad was elected as
permanent Chairman.
A Indian Civil Servant B.N. Rao prepared draft for
Indian Constitution. (B.N.Rao was also adviser of
constituent assembly)
CONSTITUENT ASSEMBLY OF INDIA
6. Dr. Rajendra Prasad framed a Drafting committee
to discuss & propose amendments in the draft
headed by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.
This Drafting committee constitutes seven
members,
1. Dr. B.R. Ambedkar (Chairman)
2. Alladi Krishnaswami Ayyar
3. N. Gopalaswami
4. K.M Munshi
5. Mohammad Saadulla
6. B.L. Mitter
7. D.P. Khaitan.

7. Total 12 Session of 114 days were held
for debate and discussion on draft
constitution and Which was later
published in 12 volumes..
After great debate and discussion,
Constituent assembly completed its
work in 2 year 11 months and 18 days
and The New Constitution of India was
adopted by the constituent assembly on
26th Nov 1949. This day i.e. 26 of
November is celebrated as Constitution
day.
SESSIONS OF CONSTITUENT ASSEMBLY
8. On Jan 24 1959, President Dr. Rajendra Prasad
and 283 other members (total 284 members) of
constituent assembly signed on constitution. Pt.
Nehru was first and Dr. Rajendra Prasad was the
last to sign.
New Constitution of India came into force on 26th
Jan 1950 & this was the date on which
constitution was commenced.
The reason January 26 was picked as the day for
the constitution to come into force is because in
1929, during the Lahore Session of the Indian
National Congress, where Jawaharlal Nehru was
elected president, a resolution was passed
demanding complete independence for the first
time.
