4. INTRODUCTION
The lesson ‘Kathmandu’ is an extract taken from the book
‘Heaven Lake’ written by Vikram Seth .The book ‘Heaven Lake’
describes a long journey from China to India via Tibet and Nepal.
This lesson is a description of two famous shrines and its
surroundings in Kathmandu i.e. Pashupatinath Temple and
Baudhnath Stupa.
He also gives a vivid picture of a Fluteseller and its music in the
Market . Which makes him to think about the importance of Music.
5. TWO SPIRITUAL SHRINES
PASHUPATINATH TEMPLE
He saw a sign that ‘Entrance for Hindus only’ and
there is an atmosphere of febrile confusion
Nepalese princess comes to the temple and
everyone bows.
A group of westerners were trying to enter the
temple by the main gate.
Two monkeys were fighting and chasing each
other.
The river Bagmati flows nearby. A corpse
cremated, Washerwomen were washing in the
river and also Old offering are thrown in the river.
A small shrine in the river bank when goddess with
escape and evil period end on earth.
6. TWO SPIRTUAL SHRINES
BAUDHNATH STUPA
The Stupa had a white dome like
structure and was surrounded by
roads
There were some small shops owned
by Tibetan Immigrants
We can get Tibetan prints , silver
jewelerry and felt bags
The surrounding was very quiet and
peaceful and there were no crowds.
7. KATHMANDU- THE BUSIEST CITY
Kathmandu is vivid, mercenary, religious, with small
shrines to owner-adorned deities along the narrowest
and busiest streets.
There were fruit sellers, flute sellers, hawkers of
postcards; shops selling Western cosmetics, lm rolls
and chocolate; or copper utensils and Nepalese
antiques.
Film songs blare out from the radios, car horns sound,
bicycle bells ring, stray cows low questioningly at
motorcycles, vendors shout out their
8. KINDS OF FLUTES
In Kathmandu ,the author came across a flute
seller standing in the corner of the square near
his hotel .This seller was different from other
sellers .He was occasionally selecting a flute
from his pole and playing a tune. He was not
shouting to sell his flute. The melodious tune of
the flute played by the seller attracted the author.
Almost every culture has its flute like reed neh
,the recorder,the Japanese shakuhachi, the
Hindustan deep Bansuri ,Breathy flutes of South
America and High pitched Chinese flutes
9. IMPORTANCE OF MUSIC
Each flute is different but all of them are
played using the breath an thus unites all
the human beings together
The author is surprised and mesmerized
by the melodious flutes and now he
started noticing small things that he never
paid any attention
10. CONCLUSION
From the lesson Kathmandu, we learn that we
must all try and maintain the purity and serenity
of the holy places and practice thoughtful
actions.
This is a beautiful account of Kathmandu as
recorded by its author, Vikram Seth. By
capturing every little thing, he successfully
manages to portray Kathmandu in vivid detail,
its contrasting stillness and endearing chaos.
