Epidemiology of Injuries
Injuries are the U.S.’s third leading cause of death.
They are the leading cause of death for ages <50.
Higher injury rates exist for groups with lower SES.
Many injuries are not fatal, but fatal injuries are the ones that are most reliably
reported.
Injuries, especially to head and spinal cord, resulting in long-term disability are
especially costly to society.
Males have higher injury rates than females.
Blacks have lower injury mortality than whites.

Poisoning
Poisoning is the leading cause of injury death.
– Recent increase is largely from unintentional deaths, recreational use of
prescription pain relievers.

Firearms Injuries
Firearm injuries are third leading cause of injury death at nearly 40,000 deaths
in 2017.
– 61% suicides, 37% homicides, others unintentional
Homicide rates are 2 to 20 times higher in the U.S. than other developed
countries.
