1. PARENTING STYLES
I. AUTHORITARIAN – parents try to shape, control
and evaluate the behaviour and attitudes of their
children according to a set traditional standard.
They stress the importance of obedience to
authority and discourage verbal give-and-take
between themselves and their children. They
favour punitive measures to curb their children’s
“willfulness” whenever their children’s behaviour
conflicts with what they believe to be correct.
Children of authoritarian parents tend to lack
social competence in dealing with other children.
They withdraw from social contact and rarely take
initiative. They tend to lack intellectual curiosity,
have poor communication skills and are
emotionally stiff.
2. II. PERMISSIVE – a) permissive indifferent –
parents who set few limits and provide little attention,
interest or emotional support. Children of permissive
indifferent parents have poor self-control and poor
social skills b) permissive indulgent – parents who
are highly involved but place few demands or control
on the child. Children of permissive indulgent
parents often fail to learn respect for others, tend to
be impulsive, immature and out of control
III. AUTHORITATIVE – these parents are caring and
sensitive toward their children, but they also set firm
limits and enforce them while encouraging them to be
individualistic and independent. Children become
self-reliant, self-controlled, are high achievers,
content, more friendly and socially competent in their
dealings with others
