2. Introduction
 What is xylitol?
- Xylitol is a substance that is categorized as a sugar alcohol (or
polyalcohol).
- Sugar alcohols are like hybrids of a sugar molecule and alcohol molecule.
Their structure gives them the ability to stimulate the sweet taste

3. Xylitol in Nature
- Xylitol is found in small amounts in many fruits and vegetables and is
therefore considered natural. Besides, humans even produce small
amounts of it via normal metabolism.
- Xylitol has a similar sweetness as regular sugar, but contains 40%
fewer calories.
 Table Sugar: 4 calories per gram.
 Xylitol: 2.4 calories per gram.

Xylitol can be processed from trees like birch, but it can also be made
with an industrial process that transforms a plant fiber called xylan into
xylitol.

5. The History of Xylitol
• The natural sweetener was first discovered at the end of the 19th
century. It really became popular in the early 20th century when
Finland suffered a cane sugar shortage due to lack of shipping during
World War II.
• It wasn’t until the early 1970’s that Finnish researchers discovered the
natural birch tree sweetener was actually really good for your teeth.

6. Xylitol Gum
• In 1975 the first xylitol chewing gum was made.
• Xylitol gum is sugar-free but contains natural sweetener therefore it’s good for
teeth. Since Xylitol gum has been introduced in Finland, the number of people
who have cavities dropped dramatically thank to the habit chewing Xylitol gum
after each meal.
• Lotte Xylitol dental gum contains more than 50% Xylitol in sweetener.

10. Xylitol is Safe?
Xylitol is perfectly safe for humans.
With a large amounts, it lead to
diarrhea, abdominal pain and
cramping, ... but most users do not
experience these symptoms. To avoid
this, follow the guidelines on the
nutrition label when using xylitol.

11. Dosage
 In one study, subjects consumed an average of 3.3 lbs (1.5 kg) of xylitol
per month, with a maximum daily intake of over 40 grams without any
negative effects.
 People use sugar alcohol to sweeten all sorts of thing… coffee, teas and
various recipes. You can replace sugar with xylitol in a 1:1 ratio.

12. Xylitol is an all natural sweetener that looks and tastes like sugar.
Xylitol has about a third the calories as table sugar, and is a healthy
alternative for diabetics. Not only does it make an excellent sugar
substitute, but it aids in the prevention of dental caries, and reduces
plaque formation.
Xylitol also occurs naturally in our bodies – in fact, an average size
adult manufactures up to 15 grams of xylitol daily during normal
metabolism.
