Main Sugar Cane Producing Areas
Early it was the first largest producer of sugar cane
but now it ranks second due to following reasons
Smaller mills
Small scale cultivation , as many farmers gave up
growing sugarcane and now started growing food
crops like rice .
Fertilization not done scientifically.
Great distance between fields and factors
increases cost of production and transport.

12. Problems Faced By Farmers Growing Sugarcane In North India
Problems
Low yield due to
small scale
cultivation
Low sucrose
content which
tends to dry if
not crushed
within 24 hours.
Great distance
between the farms
and factories
increases the cost of
production and
transport,
Outmoded and
worn out
machinery used
13. Advantages That Cultivators Have In South India
Large and well planned holdings
Mills are close to plantations which decreases cost of transport, managed by
cooperative sectors.
Factories are near centre of large consumption which lowers cost of transport.
Fertilization is done using scientific means.
Longer crushing period .
Modern machinery used.
14. Problems Faced By Sugar Cane Industry
• More demand of gur and brown sugar in villages
• Low sucrose content in Indian sugarcane
• Low yield per hectare
• Short crushing period
• High cost of production
15. Recent Development – Coimbatore Cane
• Sugarcane Breeding Institute (SBI) is a central research institute in
Coimbatore, India produced a variety of sugar cane called as
