The Greenhouse Effect is where the Sun emits Short Wave Radiation (insolation) which then hits the Earthâs Surface and either gets absorbed (heating up the surface) or gets re-radiated as Long Wave Radiation and gets absorbed by the Greenhouse Gases which, in turn, heat up the Atmosphere.
As the CO2 levels in the atmosphere rise, so does the temperature. This means that the CO2 is absorbing more of the heat from the suns rays and subsequently heating up the Earth. This means that if the CO2 levels continue to rise, then the temperature of the planet will continue to rise, with possibly dire consequences.
CO2 is not the only Greenhouse Gas, but it is the most prominent one, taking up ~56% of the greenhouse gases. Other Greenhouse Gases are Methane, that takes up ~16%, Halocarbons, that take up ~12%, Ozone, that takes up ~10% and finally Nitrous Oxide that takes up ~5%, with the remaining other gases too insignificant to have an impact.
As you can see from the graphs, the majority of Human Greenhouse Gas Emissions are caused by Energy. This is because the most popular way to produce energy is in a power plant, where Fossil Fuels are burned and used to create the energy that we use. When the Fossil Fuels are burnt, there are bi-products, and these are released into the atmosphere and are greenhouse gases.
Here are the main reasons of Sea level rise: Melting of glaciers, thermal expansion, melting of Antarctic ice sheet and ice loss from Greenland. Many instruments of measurement, most notably satellite measurements, tell us that over the past 100 years, the Global Mean Sea Level has raised by 4 to 8 inches (10 to 20 centimetres). However, the annual rate of rise over the past 20 years has been 0.13 inches (3.2 millimetres) a year, roughly twice the average speed of the preceding 80 years.
Global Warming could lead to some very bad problems, including: The Rise Of Sea Level (this happens because as the temperature of the earth heats up, so does the water, which results in it expanding and taking up more space, as well as this, the heat melting glaciers has a big impact on the sea level rise). Some Animals Habitats are being destroyed, the most famous example is the Polar Bearâs Iceland habitat is melting. And finally Desertification, this is when the rising heat of the earth causes more water to evaporate, resulting in a desert being formed.
People sometimes think that Global Warming can only cause problems, but there are many benefits as well, one being that the temperature of Earth isn't much lower than it is. Some other future benefits are that the seasons in which you can grow crops will be lengthened, which means that more stock will be harvested. As well as this, some places that cant grow there own crops, will be able too. Another big benefit is the resources of the Arctic. No one actually knows what resources the arctic has to offer for example it could be a rich oil plain, or it could have certain rare minerals underground that we need, the possibilities are almost endless.
