FYS “Survival Activity”
September 29, 2014
In this activity we were asked to imagine that the world was ending and that we
were in charge of determining the only four survivors who would then be in charge
of recreating society and civilization after they live together in a bunker for two
years after this inevitable apocalypse.
The list of people we had to choose from were a doctor, a pregnant woman with a
four year old child, a scientist, a priest, a married couple of hippies who are drug
addicts, an old lady, an army officer with a mental instability, a welfare dependent, a
disabled person, and a university professor.
My group chose the doctor because he could become the community’s educator as
well as their medical authority. We chose the pregnant lady without her child. She
would be fertile in order to populate our new society and would be in good health to
provide labor. We chose the scientist. We decided he would be a botanist, to be the
grower of the food. Finally, we chose a professor, who we decided would be a
history teacher. She could be the keeper and maker of laws because she
knowledgeable on the history of laws as well as how societies work.
The people we eliminated were removed because we did not see how they could be
productive contributors to our society. We assumed the priest was no use because
he would not be able to procreate. The old lady and the child would use up our
resources and would be too much responsibility for the others in the community.
The drug addicts and the welfare dependent are also risks as they would have to
constantly be watched and may be lazy or dealing with withdraw from their
addictions. Finally, we decided that the army officer with a mental instability was a
risk to himself and others incase he snaps.
