How technology has changed new movie productions and turned classic films into live action movies. As well as how this has changed the primary target audience.
2. History of the film industry
•The art of film has drawn on several earlier traditions in fields such as
oral storytelling, literature, theatre and visual arts.
•For example, shadowgraphy has been used since prehistoric times, it’s an optical method that reveals the
differences in transparent media.
• Between 1887 to 1894, the first successful short cinematographic presentations were established. The
first projected movies that lasted longer than 10 seconds.
3. Examples of earlier texts
•Early 1880s - introduction of lengths of celluloid photographic film and the invention of motion picture
cameras e.g. Lumière brothers' short films lacked either the quality, financial backing or stamina.
•Jungle Book was originally produced in 1996 as a cartoon by Disney which meant the primary audience
was children mainly under the age of 13. However the secondary audiences could be adults with children
due to the content being appropriate for younger children therefore adults would be watching the text
with children.
•The story of The Jungle Book was originally a collection of short stories by Rudyard Kipling which was first
published in 1894. This was mostly aimed at older audiences as the stories had more of a darker tone.
4. How has technology impacted on the
form and audience?
•Technology has allowed Disney to comply with its policy of turning classic cartoon Disney films into live
actions which would appeal not only to families but also to teenagers as well as young adults, they were
able to do this using CGI
•By using technology this has led to the cost of the production, of the film to increase dramatically
however, the profit of the film was $588.6 million more than the 1967 version made as people were more
invested in the idea of having a live action film due to it keeping up with the constant changes of audiences
preferences.
5. Has the audience developed due to changes in
platform?
How do our set texts fit into this form?
•Due to the updates in technology the target audience has changed throughout the years first being adults
from the books, then changing to children with the cartoon edition and then finally families with the 2016
CGI version.
•With the 2016 version the CGI it allows people to reimagine the well-known storyline and view it as if it
were to be real life. This allows people to be more intrigued with the movie and develop more of an
emotional connection to the movie as they can relate more to a real life human rather than a cartoon
character.
6. What is the future for this form and
why?
•I believe that with the constant changes within technology the film industry will continue to evolve and
develop our ideology with what the future would consist of.
•I also think that there would be an increase of cartoon productions mainly from Disney turned into live
action movies to expand the primary target audience.
