Walt Disney was founded on
October 16th 1923 by two
brothers Walt and Roy O.
Disney
The first animated film Disney
released was Snow White and
the Seven Dwarves. Debuting
in Carthay Circle Theatre on
December 21st 1937.
Disney thought the first
version of the script for The
Jungle Book was too dark for
family audiences, so he took
control and changed the
production team. Walt wanted
a film that was light, fun, and
entertaining with happy
songs.
The once small franchise now
has a net worth worth more
than 100 billion dollars
Between 1895 and 1920,
during the rise of the
cinematic industry, several
different animation techniques
were developed, including
stop-motion with objects,
puppets, clay or cutouts, and
drawn or painted animation.
The first surviving
feature animation film The
Adventures of Prince Achmed
from 1926 was created using
silhouette animation created
by director Lottee Reiniger.
Argubaly, Humorous Phases of
Funny Faces could be the first
ever animated film as some
film historian would say, its a
silent cartoon by J. Stuart
Blackton released in 1906. It
features a cartoonist drawing
faces on a chalkboard, and the
faces coming to life.
1937 1942 1959 1964
Disney's original primary audience for The Jungle Book was universal so
anybody could watch however it was mainly micro-targeted at families with
little children i.e between ages like 4-11.
It'd most likely be aimed at males due to the male protagonist so they are
able to identify themselves with that character as he appears adventurous
and the jungle setting as well as animals but it can also draw in a young
female audience because of the happy songs.
But it has gained so much popularity in recent years that it even
has viewers outside the main target audience i.e. teens, young adults,
adults etc. Though disney has this stereotype surroundinfg it that it appeals
more to a female audience because of the Disney princess craze surrounding
it movies like The Jungle Book come from a more neutral background
appealing to all genders.
When it comes to the new generation-Gen Z they may relate to Mowgli for
different reasons and example being trying to fit in a situation where you're
the odd one out.
Disney decided to develop the idea of
using transparent cels.In order to have a
more realistic touch he used a multiplane
camera which photographed a much
larger number of layers of frames at
once, each at different distances from the
camera and moving at different speeds.
This created the illusion of depth and
almost a 3D effect. It also enabled special
effects to be created, such as moving
water or flickering stars.
This would have drawn the audience in
as technology back then wasn’t as
developed so a movie like The Jungle
Book with its effects and animations
would have drawn in a large crowd as
well as money.
Due to the drastic improvements of technology we are able
to use streaming sites such as Disney+ to relieve good
Disney classics like the jungle book. Plus due to Covid this
would have really benefited the streaming site as they were
receiving more and more customers which means more
money for Disney as well as popularity for the nostalgic
movie.
The audience has developed quite a lot
because they have grown up but its still a
nostalgic part in their childhood. Which
they are able to revisit due to Disney +
The current 21st century children ages 4-
11,may not be as enticed or as excited as the
children back then were because technology
has played a big impact in the filming
industry.
They are into more fast paced action packed
movies, though The Jungle Book was a
phenomenon at its time with “advanced
technology” the current generation may
view it as more slow paced and under
developed.
The Jungle Book challenges 1960’s
conventions of animated movies as
these animations were seen as quite
realistic and were far more developed
of its time receiving great reviews
from critics. Though it didn’t have the
mass amount of media platforms that
we have now, the same ones the
remake was able to use. However, the
movie was promoted through the
available platforms in the 1960’s like
posters, TV's if the family had one,
adverts on newspapers and potentially
radios. Mainly anyway that created
brand awareness.
There has already been a remake of the
movie due to technology being improved
from what it was since 1967.
No longer needing a multiplane camera
but by using a 3D computer graphics
programme, the current remake uses CGI
(Computer Generated Imagery) which
gives the movie a more realistic effect.
This has evidently allowed them to attract
book lovers,1967 jungle book fans who
want to relieve a nostalgic moment in their
lives and current 21st century Disney film
fanatics.
