Test serve as important tools in the assessment of students
learning achievement.
The class test conducted by teaches usually does not maintain
the required quality.
Most of the test check only rote memorisation and fail to test
higher order skills as reasoning analysis, creativity and
judgement.

Measurement Issues
Measurement in education means finding out
students learning achievement in the cognitive, affective
and psycho – motor domains.
It involves four activities.
i. Designing opportunities to gather evidences
ii. Collecting evidences
iii.Interpreting the collected evidences
iv.Acting on the interpretations.
Important Measurement Issues
4 types:
1. Issues in Measuring the Affective and Psycho-motor Domain Objectives.
2. Issues in Measuring the Achievement of cognitive Domain Objectives.
3. Awarding Marks in the Measurement of Students’ Learning
Achievement.
4.Use of standardized tests in measuring proficiency Achieved in
Learning.
5. Issues Related to other factors in Measuring learning Achievement.
In the assessment of learning there are two aspects:
1. Formative Tests
2.Summative Examinations
1. Issues in Measuring the Affective and Psycho-motor Domain
Objectives:
Teacher’s observation finds an important place. When
there is no proper teacher’s observation of student learning, it
leads to wrong interpretation of the measurements obtained.
Problems in using observation as an
assessment technique:
i. Likes and dislikes
ii. Expressed behavior
iii.Observer could obtain information related to one aspect of
student behavior only.
iv.Data recorded may not be accurate.
v. Natural behavior not getting expressed.
vi.Observation requires more time, more patiences and keen
insight.
2. Issues in Measuring the Achievement
of cognitive Domain Objectives:
 Test items – one or two content areas only.
 Questions formed by unambiguous words.
 Knowledge level – more in numbers
 Application level – minimum number of question
 Without preparing the rubrics.
 Questions having short answers are framed as essay
type questions.
3. Awarding Marks in the Measurement of
Students’ Learning Achievement:

When there is no proper teacher’s observation of student learning, it leads to wrong interpretation of the measurements obtained.

Expressed behavior iii.Observer could obtain information related to one aspect of student behavior only. iv.Data recorded may not be accurate. v. Natural behavior not getting expressed. vi.Observation requires more time, more patiences and keen insight.
