3. Advantages and disadvantages of IC Analysis
1. Constructional Homonymy/ The Problem
of Ambiguity.
Constructions having different structure and
meaning.
E.g. a) Smart Children’s pet
i) Smart/children’s pet
ii) Smart children’s/pet
4. 2) The Problem of Discontinuity or
Discontinuous IC s
Elements that belong together are
separated in the sequence.
E.g. 1. Is John coming
Is John Coming
2. He took his hat off.
5. 3. The Problem of Embedding
One sentence having another sentence –like
construction embedded inside it.
e.g. The boy who won the prize is my cousin.
6. 4. The Problem of Conjoining
It occurs when elements are added or joined
to other similar elements.
e.g. Do you like beer, brandy, whisky or rum?
7. 5. The Problem of structural similarity
e.g. 1) John is easy to please
2) John is eager to please
ICA will show these two sentences as having
similar structure.
8. 6. The problem of inter-sentence
relationships
ICA fails to reveal obvious co-relations such as
relationship between active and passive, affirmative
and negative etc.
e.g. Rama killed Ravana.
Ravana was killed by Rama.
9. 7. The problem of indicating group genitives
Consider the phrase:
The King of Denmark’s son
The King of Denmark’s
The King of Denmark ’ s son
10. 8. The Problem of overlapping IC s
E.g. He has no love of, or kindness for dogs.
9. The problem of multiple IC s
Certain constructions are not divisible into
two IC s.
E.g. An intelligent smart handsome boy
11. 10. The problem of understood elements
ICA has no provision to indicate understood
elements.
e.g. Please pass the salt
[ ‘you’ is understood]
