1. What is the main Purpose of a Film Poster
The main purpose of a film poster is for a
production company to promote the upcoming
release of their film and to entice their target
audience into wanting to watch the product. Using
the main conventions of such as the title of the
film, the release date, the cast list and the a main
image, the film poster gives the audience a very
direct, yet brief insight into what the film poster is
promoting.
2. Main Image
The main image of a film poster is usually an image of one
of the main characters that is in the film being
promoted, however in some film posters it will use a group
of people or a few pictures merged into one big image. The
image will take up most of the page in order for it to stand
out more on the page. It gives the audience a slight hint as
to what the film will be about and what the genre of the film
is going to be.
3. Film Title
The title of the film simply tells the audience what the
product is called. It can also give the audience an clue as to
what the genre of the film is or what the film is going to be
about. Some film titles are very clear as to what the film is
about whereas some titles give very little away. The title of
the film also needs to be able to entice the audience and
convince them that the film is going to be something that
they want to see.
4. Release Date
The release date is a very important convention of a film
poster as it informs the audience as to what date the film
shall be released on. The release date of the film can
sometimes give a clue as to what genre the film will be such
as films released around Christmas and Halloween.
5. Cast List
The cast list lets the audience know which actors/actresses
are starring in the film. This can entice an audience to want
to see the film if one of their favourite stars appears in the
film. This can also help identify the genre of the film to the
audience as the actor/actress may be well known for acting
in a certain style of film.
6. When are film posters released
Film posters are released a few weeks to a month before the
release date of the film. This is in order to give enough time
to promote the film so that they will get a large audience to
go and watch it. Some films have also been know to release
teaser film posters months in advance in order to advertise
a sequel to trilogy or long running set of films. This is used
to hype up the audience about the latest film in the sequel
and really get them excited for its release.
