There are more than 600
muscles in the human body,
and all of them make up the
muscular system.
Their main function is to make
movement possible.
It can either be Involuntary and
Voluntary

Voluntary Muscles
They are muscles that move only by consciously moving them.
Whenever a person walks, chews, writes, waves, or jumps, his or
her muscles pull on the joints of his or her skeletal system, allowing
him or her to move.
It can either be Involuntary and Voluntary
Involuntary Muscles
It can either be Involuntary and Voluntary
Involuntary Muscles
They are muscles that move automatically, which means that the person has no control
over his or her movement. An example of an involuntary muscle is the heart, which
continuously pumps blood to various organs and tissue in the body even when the
person is asleep.

Skeletal Muscles
 Skeletal muscles are necessary
when performing day to day
activities such as working,
jumping, dancing, and running.
 The skeleton muscles are found
throughout the body. About 30%
to 40% of the total body mass of
an average human composed of
the muscles.
Skeletal Muscles
Skeletal muscles
move by contracting
and relaxing. They are
voluntary, which
means that the
person controls when
and how they move.
They are attached to the
bone by fibrous
connective tissues called
tendons, which are thick
bands that pull on the
bones as the muscles
contract.
A skeletal muscle is made
up of thousands of muscle
fibers, along with
connective tissue, blood
vessels, and nerves.
Each muscle fiber is
surrounded by a delicate
network of connective
tissue called
endomysium.
A group of muscle fibers is called fascicle.
Groups of fascicle are held together
by another connective tissue called
perimysium.
The epimysium is the outermost
layer of tissue that covers the entire
muscle tissue.
Skeletal Muscles
 Skeletal muscle
fibers look rea and
white.
 They look striated or
striped so they are
sometimes called
striated muscles.

Cardiac Muscles
 Cardiac muscles
make up the thick
middle layer of the
heart.
Cardiac Muscles
The cardiac
muscle (also
called the
myocardium) is
surrounded by a
thin outer layer
called the
visceral
pericardium
Cardiac Muscles
While the inner
layer is called
the
endocardium.
Cardiac Muscles
 Cardiac muscles are
involuntary muscles.
They move on their
own, which means
that the person does
not consciously think
whether to contract
or to relax them.
Cardiac Muscles
 The coronary arteries
supply blood to the
cardiac muscles, while
the cardiac veins
drain them of blood
to be supplied to the
other body parts.
Cardiac Muscles
 Individual cell called
the cardiomyocyte
makes the heart
contract. This
contraction generates
the pressure needed
by the heart to pump
blood throughout the
body.

Smooth Muscles
 Smooth
muscles are
involuntary
muscles that do
not connect to
the bones, but
control organs
within the body.
Smooth Muscles

walls of organs
such as the

organs such as the
esophagus, stomach,
and intestines.
Smooth Muscles
The smooth
characteristic of
these muscles makes
the process of
moving food easier.
• attached to the bones
• voluntary
• can flex and relax that allows movement
• striated, or having long and thin lines
• multinucleated, or have more than one nucleus
Smooth Muscles
The same is true with
the muscle in the
artery walls, but
instead of food,
blood passes through
them.

• involuntary
• spindle-shaped
• non-striated
• very elastic
• having only a singlenucleus
