14. Roadmap or compass?
How to get started
Can you plan for innovation?
“The only constant is change”
What is going to work in your organisation?
What if it doesn’t work?
Where does the engagement with users appear on the map?
Take risks
Don’t be afraid to make mistakes
Vanessa Lewis – Exploring the future of libraries 14
15. Why change to an eLibrary service?
Using new technologies to meet the challenges of the information
environment.
Format change – information is ‘born digital’
External information environment – overwhelming
Internal information environment – hidden or inaccessible
eLibrary makes external and internal information sets searchable through a
“Google” type search.

16. Skills for the future
Find new ways to engage with existing users
Find new users to engage with
A better way to use Google?
At the ATO there is:
• A more active role in understanding the work of clients
• RSS feeds instead of newsletters
• Podcasts for knowledge transfer
• Collaboration via wiki
Some things never change
Focus on the end user
Libraries have never been just about physical collections
Vanessa Lewis – Exploring the future of libraries 16
17. http://edition.cnn.com/2009/TECH/09/04/future.library.technology/
Some libraries are trying to get an edge by focusing on the
“deeply local” material.
How do we help add that value to a format like the internet,
The one-way flow of information from book to patron here
which is expansively global? We look at we do have isn’t
goodwe could anymore
that enough help people gain access to by digitising it.
18. The way ahead
Users are moving towards applications, widgets and gadgets – tools that
give what you want, when you want without, being complex
Digital collections – growth in eBooks and digitising collections
Semantic web – allowing data to be shared across applications
• Resource Description Framework (RDF)
Even more collaboration
Something new

20. Wikipedia defines Linked Data as "a term used to describe a recommended best practice for exposing, sharing, and
connecting pieces of data, information, and knowledge on the Semantic Web using URIs and RDF."
