S UITE RELIEF
MAS SAGE
A soothing massage can help you unwind,
but that's not all. A growing body of
research shows massage therapy can be
an effective part of pain relief and
management. Millions of Americans
suffer regularly from pain and regular
headaches. Explore the information on
how massage therapy can help.
2. Pain is caused by lack of oxygen at the
cellular level. Lack of oxygen can be
caused by many things, such as
inflammation and constriction. For
example, when we get the flu and our
body becomes sore and hot with fever,
our muscle fibers begin to stick
together, which inhibits the circulation
that carries oxygen to our cells. When
muscle fibers remain stuck together,
this lack of oxygen causes pain.
There are secrets to creating an
environment within our bodies that
makes pain less likely. One is drinking
eight 8-ounce glasses of water every
day. Our bodies are 70% water, and
when this level drops, we enter a state
of dehydration which slows down
circulation. Without water it is
impossible to enjoy adequate
circulation, and we can live in a
constant state of pain and discomfort.
The other is massage. Above all else,
massage relaxes the tissue and
increases circulation. This allows the
flow of fluids, nutrients, and oxygen to
reach the cell where all health is
maintained. So get massage regularly,
drink lots of water, and live a pain-free
and healthy life!
HEADACHES & THE BE NE FI TS O F M ASS AG E
Headaches cripple our ability to function optimally and are probably the most common form of what
could be called discomfort. Now is a good time to allow a massage professional the opportunity to rid you
of your headache discomfort naturally. There are three types of headaches—tension, sinus and migraine.
Tension headaches account for over fifty percent of all primary health care providers’ visits. Sinus
headaches are attributed to allergies and the flu.

Tension Headaches
There are as many causes of headaches as there are personalities and lifestyles.
Whether the cause is emotional or physical, the result is the same – throbbing
temples and mental discomfort. We are certainly not at our creative best when our
head hurts. Massage addresses tension headaches by relaxing the neck and shoulders.
As we relax, we soften our muscles and headaches disappear.
These are the easiest headaches for massage therapists to address.
Sinus Headaches
Sinus headaches are best addressed by face massage. As the sinus cavities
become relaxed, the fluids that are trapped in these spaces release and begin to flow,
allowing the sinuses to drain and cleanse. This is a slow process and usually takes a
few massage sessions. Between massages, you can find relief with a
few minutes of regular self-massage.
Migraine Headaches
Migraine headaches can be caused by either impingement of the nerves in the neck
or by chemical imbalances. Massage can address the impinged nerve problem by
releasing the Levator Scapula, a set of muscles that stretch from
the shoulder blades to the neck. It is often necessary to address either the
left or right Levator for several sessions to achieve complete relief.
