INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY TRAINING
ACKNOWLEDGMENT
I would like to express my special thanks of gratitude to
my teacher ‘CA. Priyank Varshney’ who gave me the
golden opportunity to do this wonderful project on the
topic ‘Operating System’, which also helped me in
doing a lot of research and I came to know about so
many new things.

CONTENTS
What is an Operating
system?
Functions
Characteristics
Types of operating system
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY TRAINING
An interface
between users
and hardware
Manages computer
hardware and
software
Allows efficient
usage
Provides
information
Protection
Acts as control
program

FUNCTIONS
 Process Management- Some major activities:-
1.Creation and deletion of user and system processes
2.Suspension and resumption of processes
3.A mechanism for process synchronization
 Memory Management- Some major activities:-
1.To keep track of ‘which part of memory are currently
being used and by whom’
2.To decide ‘which process is loaded into memory when memory
space becomes available; and to allocate and de-allocate
memory space, as needed

CONTINUE…..
 File Management- Some major activities:-
1.The creation and deletion of files;
2.The creation and deletion of directions;
3.The backup of files on stable storage media
 Device Management- A computer system consists of
I/O devices such as printer, mouse, keyboard. The
device management module of an operating system
takes care of all I/O devices.

 Security- Computer systems often store large amounts
of information, some of which is highly sensitive and
valuable. Users can trust the system and rely on it
against destruction and unauthorized access
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY TRAINING
Time Sharing -
Provides
simultaneous
use of computer
by many user
Characteristics
Multiprocessing
–Multiple CPU’s
execute work of
many people
Distributed
Systems –
several
computers are
connected
together to
share resources
Real time
systems – It
gives rapid
response time,
e.g..- Facebook,
Twitter
