Watch 3 trailers for films in your
chosen genre (sub-genre), Analyse
them in terms of their style, music,
  stars, plot, editing, graphics etc.
Trailer one: ‘Orphan’
• The style of this trailer matches those of a typical
horror trailer, it has Gothic elements reinforced by
the lighting which goes dark when the equilibrium
is disrupted. The trailer has a linear narrative and
goes from a normal family scene (equilibrium) to
    terrifying scenes (disequilibrium).
• The editing gets faster as the scenes become more
intense which we hope to use within our own
trailer. It also cuts to a black screen within horror
scenes while making a loud ‘boom’ sound, this also
quickens as the scenes become scarier fastens the
pace of the trailer. They have used a slow motion
effect when the little girl walks around the car to
    emphasis this.
• The mise-en-scene is also an important part of the
trailer, the snow creates gothic mystery as well as
reflecting isolation and the paleness of the little
    girls skin.
• When the mum steps out of the car looking lost
they use a shot which rises up and goes into an
arial shot reflecting the intimidation which she
    feels.
Trailer two: ‘The Ring’
• The trailer for the 2002 film ‘The ring’ really inspired
us for the making of our own trailer. It uses the typical
conventions of a horror trailer. The slow piano music in
the background adds to eerie atmosphere, when the
ring comes on screen and they show the video, it then
turns into a distorted type of sound which again
reinforces the horror element and leaves audiences on
edge. We hope to use this type of music and non-
diegetic sounds within our trailer because we thought
    this technique was particularly effective.
• The trailer uses a low of high angle shots to almost
suggest the intimidation which the characters feel
again reflecting upon the emotions of the audience.
The whole trailer has a very dull look to it because of
the use of the low lighting.
• The use of mise-en-scene supports the gothic element
by the use of the rain and the bad weather emphasises
the gloomy feel and adds gothic elements. Also the
little boys performance and his looks makes us on
edge because children are usually happy and loud,
whereas his quiet voice and wide eyes makes
audiences feel unsettled, this really inspired us and
gave us an idea of how to use performance to create a
    successful horror trailer.
Trailer three: ‘The Grudge’
• The trailer for the film ‘The Grudge’ was
another trailer which really inspired our
ideas for the making of our own trailer.
• The trailer uses a lot of strobe like editing
where it cuts to a black screen quickly.
This makes audiences feel confused and
scares about what is going to come next.
As the scenes become more intense the
editing speeds up which again is
something we hope to use within our
own trailer because we thought it was
    effective in making audiences feeling
    uncomfortable.
• The use of the low angle shots again
    makes audience feel uncomfortable and
intimidated but also feel like they have to
look around for something else or for
something which may be behind her,
    making viewers feel on edge.
• The actual girl seems to almost be in
black in white, and has a greyness to her
skin making this trailer have an almost
    supernatural element to it.
In conclusion we decided that these three
trailers inspired us the most and we decided
that these trailers used really effective
techniques in terms of their style, music and
editing in making audiences feel on edge and
scared. We hope to use and adapt elements
from these three trailers into the making of our
                    own trailer.
