1) The genetic analysis of King Bela III of Hungary from the 12th century shows that he belonged to the rare paternal haplogroup R1a-Z2123, which relates to populations such as the Scythians, Alans, and Xiongnu. 2) Additional DNA testing indicates his haplotype is within a sub-subclade of R1a-Z2123 only found presently in the Karachay ethnic group of the Caucasus region. 3) This genetic evidence helps confirm historical accounts of nomadic groups with R1a lineages migrating across Eurasia and mixing with the local populations between the Iron Age and Medieval period.
