3. 1937: The brothers Richard and Maurice McDonald
opened a hot dog stand in California .
1940: The first restaurant called McDonald's opened in
San Bernardino, California. It was a small but succesful
restaurant run by the two brothers. They produced a
limited menu, concentrating on just a few items –
burgers, fries and beverages- wich allowed them to
focus on quality at eevery step.
1967 : Opened the first restaurant outside the United
States, in Canada
1971: Opened the first European fast food, in The
Netherlands
5. “Fast food” is a term born in the 50s and given to
food prepared and served quickly, often in take-
away packages.
The fast food concept was already present in
ancient Rome because there were stands in the
street selling sausages, bread and wine.
After World War I drive in restaurants were
introduced and the first hamburger chain opened
in 1921. They were the precursors of modern fast
food. Nowadays the USA have the biggest fast
food industry in the world, and their restaurants
are located all around the world.
So fast food was born in the ancient Rome, but
has only developed in the last years.
