Analysis of kate nash foundations and rihanna rude boy
1. Analysis of Kate Nash Foundations and Rihanna Rude Boy.
The first music video that I am going to analyse includes Kate Nash’s music video Foundations. I have decided to
discuss this video in particular as it is the one I will be using when creating my own original music video.
Throughout the video I believe the most important feature consists of mise-en-scene through the use of props. I think
that the props are vitally important when producing a successful music video as it allows the audience to maintain
engage as the constant scenery is changing whether being the backdrop or props used. Likewise throughout the
music video the director has decided to base the storyline on a narrative as no performance is included, therefore this
meant that the director had to take into consideration the likeability of the actors and artists used as they will be the
main point of focus. Furthermore to ensure that the music video was a success there was a range of shots including,
establishing shots to set the scene, close ups to highlight the artists emotions, long shots allowing the audience to
visualise everything on the screen, mid shots, etc.
When producing my own version of the song I am aiming to make sure every shot is carried out differently in order
to emphasise the originality. Therefore from watching and analyzing the clip I have decided that I will use props that
highlight the simplest things in life such as sticking hula hoops on each finger, skimming stones, water fight,
popping bubble wrap etc all in order to show the simple pleasures that people can be amused at.
Secondly I have decided to analyse Rihannas music video ‘Rude Boy’ as this is an perfect example of a post modern
music video. When analyzing the entire clip it is clearly illustrated to the audience that Rihanna is going against
society’s norms and expectations as she is going completely off of the typical female artist stereotype. Throughout
the music video Rihanna does everything she can to be shown as a subject not an object and attempts not be shown
in an objectified manner. However Rihanna is aiming to appeal both to the female genre due to the genre of song, as
well as a male audience due to wearing minimal clothing and dancing inappropriately to the as seen as ‘rude’ lyrics.
A key reason for the post modernity within the clip can be related to the frequent use of Andy Warhol as there is a
consistent use of bright colours, (green, yellow, red etc.) Likewise the minimal clothing and the behavior can also be
seen as post modern as its going against the usual stereotype. The whole image portrayed of the artist is illustrating
the upcoming norms and values and how society are suppose to react when watching.
